Guest Rrrsh Report post Posted August 29, 2004 The World Cup starts on Monday Ladies and Genst with the Fins and the Checks. Discuss anything and everything, we need some positive hockey talk!
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2004 I think I have a good chance to win this one. There you have it folks. The very rare Czech Republic Gimmick Post.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2004 I'm going to be biased about this, but Canada has the best balanced team in this tournament.
treble 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2004 Slovakia is a team to watch, too. Just imagine how good a team Czechoslovakia would have had the country never split up.
DangerousDamon 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2004 Sweden has some horses this time around too. If they can find a goalie who can stop 70 foot knucklepucks then they will have a chance at going to the finals
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2004 Slovakia is a team to watch, too. Just imagine how good a team Czechoslovakia would have had the country never split up. Too thin of a blue line, and will get dominated when the teams get on all cylanders
Urban Warfare 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2004 Slovakia was my dark horse also untill Peter Bondra broke his wrist yesterday..
Guest Rrrsh Report post Posted August 30, 2004 Slovakia has the same problem that Russia nad Sweden have No goaltending My Darkhorse: Finland. They will be the only team 3-0 after Round Robin play.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2004 Canada wins it all, with the Swedes having a good run as well. Russia would have had a chance if they had goaltending, and if more of their stars had elected to play. The Americans, I hate to admit, have slim chance of coming out of this looking good. Their blue-line has been hit hard with either rejections or injuries, and they might as well give the goalies question marks instead of numbers on their sweaters. (of course, regardless if the Amerks win or lose, 99% of my countrymen will be apathetic and/or unaware).

nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2004 Am I pitiful for skipping my lunch in order to make it home in time to tape today's 1:00 game? No offense to the Czechs or Finns, but it's not like it's the most enthralling match-up in the Cup. But average hockey is better than no hockey at all. the max 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2004 I don't work until 5, so I'll be relaxing in front of the TV now that my cable has finally been restored after the goddamn storm. I have no preference on who wins, btw, especially since USA isn't exactly a favorite. I'll be rooting for them, I guess. As long as there's good hockey to potentially hold us over for a while, I'm happy.
Tawren 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2004 I've missed hockey so much. 1-0 Finland right now, and this game has been really fun so far.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2004 Since a few of us are taping games to watch after work (and by a few of us, I mean me) would you guys mind using spoiler tags of some sort? It doesn't have to be the uber-anal ones that are used for movies & wresling and whatnot, but just something that if I breeze into a thread to read what you all are saying I won't see a final score or something. /doesn't mean to sound like a whiney bitch, more just asking the favor. //meant to post this before Tawren posted the score of the CR/Finland game, so it's not meant against you at all.
the max 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2004 OMG, did everyone see Jagr flip out and stab the ref with his skate blade? Oops...forgot spoiler tags... Fins looked good, only allowing 12 shots
Tawren 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2004 Sorry about that, nl5. Will do in the future. Solid game, and I can't wait until we get into the meat of the tournament. Fins totally dominated.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 Hey, I realized after the fact that I was kind of being a bitch when I asked for the spoiler tags ... it's not really that fair to you all to have to deal with spoilers just because my stupid job will force me to enjoy the games on tape delay. If you guys want to post normally, it's all good ... I'll just be more careful about what I read. Sadly, Max, you caught me pre-coffee this morning. I actually had to re-read your post and think "I don't remember seeing that last night." Too little sleep, yet again.
the max 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 I think spoiler tags are a good idea for everyone, actually. And that's a definite lack of sleep if you think Jagr pulled a Happy Gilmore.
ISportsFan 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 I think spoiler tags are a good idea for the European games that get played at 1pm/12 C, but I don't think there'll be a need for the games played at night. Just me throwing an idea out there. Jason Edit: Now that I just thought about it, how about the people on the board from Europe? When do you get the North American games, and would you like spoiler tags for the games played around 7pm eastern time?
treble 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 I'm so pissed I have to work every night this week. I'm done at around 9 or so, but by the time I get home, all the games are basically going to be over.
the max 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 One thing I've always wondered about Sweden is what are the crowns on the front of their jersey for? As in, what do they mean?
cue_meanie 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 The crowns are actually the "coat of arms" for Sweden, and their historical significance is the subject to much conjecture and rumours over the years. My favourite is that they represent the Three Wise Men, but they're others involving land areas used to participate in the election of a king, and and even older idea based on gods pre-christianity. EDIT: Their money is also called a "crown".
Tawren 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 Holmstrom scores to put Sweden up 1-0. Sweden has dominated so far, but not a great game yet. And Sturm ties it right up on a shorthanded breakaway. 1-1.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 My opinion on the spoiler tags. I think as a general rule, once it airs in the states, its fair game. I am sorry if Europeans catch the game on tape delay, but this board is based in the US. If you absolutely do not want the result spoiled, you should probably avoid the thread. bob_barron 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 Tommy Salo has been terrible so far (there's a shocker) but Sweden's offence has more then made up for it

He's not from Europe either...I don't know of many Europeans on this board that are actually watching this.
Guest Ray_Rougeau Report post Posted September 1, 2004 My God what is with our jerseys. YELLOW!?!?
Urban Warfare 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2004 Yellow jerseys or not, Canada totally DOMINATED that period. USA had nothing going. Great period.
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2004 Well nice to see that, just as expected, Canada and Sweden have both looked absolutely dominant so far. Give Sweden a good, hell even decent, goalie and they're unbeatable IMO.
