Downhome 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 I was offered a new job today, and it really sounds interesting, but I'm not sure that I should accept the offer. Just so you know, I'm a 24 year old male, and the job will pay $9/hour. The job is basicly working at a camp for troubled teens aged 13-17. On top of that, I found out that it is an all female camp. It's not even so much a camp as it is just a place where they stay. It is out in the middle of the woods, but the person who interviewed me told me they never do any outside stuff like camping, swimming, and that sort of thing. They don't even have a lake on the property. They "go to school", eat, sleep, do chores at the place, have a little free time, and then it is the counselor's job to help them out. At times I'd be alone with some of them, giving them advice, and basicly just talking to them. This is where I question it. Seeing how this is a bit more risky than other such jobs, what with it being only females and they have been through a lot what with fighting, broken up families, drugs, and on and on, I question if I should accept the job. My worry comes from the "what if" scenario. What if they do something that they shouldn't, I write them up, and they decide to get back at me by saying that something happened between us, consensual or otherwise. I know that the risk of that happens comes along with other jobs, but this one seems a bit more high risk than most. The ages, their various problems, being out in the middle of nowhere, the fact that I'd be one of the only males working there, etc... Would any of you guys, especially those my age, take this job? Sincerely, ...Downhome...
the max 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 It sounds like an interesting job, but only $9 an hour for everything that you'd be dealing with doesn't sound like something I'd take.
The Mandarin 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 I wouldn't do it, personally. I could never get wrapped up in their affairs. "Giving them advice" sounds awful, knowing at least one of them will probably drag you into something somehow, may it be with other kids at the camp or something at home. You shouldn't be responsible for their problems if you're just looking for a job and not a trained mental therapist. I'm sure there are lots more opportunities that will come your way. haVoc 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 There has to be a code of conduct and guidelines. Being the job and the situation, I'd doubt they would let you be alone with any of the girls outside of the camp. You said they don't go outside. If you were alone with them it would probably be in an office or some type of class room which is a lot safer (job and health) then taking a hike through the woods. Nevermortal 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 I make 9.30 sitting at a desk, taking phone calls.....you can do better, I say!
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 I'd say no, the potential negatives outweigh the positives. Plus some of them would probably be really annoying.
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 $9 for all that? What is your major/background in? What are you doing for money now? No good can come out of this, unless these chicks can't talk and are hot...
Downhome 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 I called them back and left a message saying that I want to talk to them and ask them a few more questions about it. Whatever happens, I don't want to just jump into this blind. I didn't see any of them when I went up to the camp this morning, but I keep running through my head those episodes of Maury where they have these smart ass girls at those bootcamps, just mouthing off non-stop. I would love to have a job where I help people though, but this one does seem a bit...different.

Downhome 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 $9 for all that? What is your major/background in? What are you doing for money now? If I tried to get more, what would you guys suggest for something like this, at least? I'd be willing to bet that I could get more if I talked to them more about that aspect, since I have a bit of experiance in dealing with this type of people. My college major was business/radio TV broadcasting, but I didn't finish and I haven't went back yet. For money now, I've been working at a local plant (which I fucking hate) and selling stuff on the internet every now and then.
Youth N Asia 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 How badly do you need a job? And do you have anything else lined up? Doesn't sound bad. Someone has to work the job, might as well be you.
Downhome 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 I laughed during the interview, because they asked me what I could bring to the table to help them learn or whatever, and I said film, writing, photography (almost said pro wrestling just to see what they would say), and they said NO CAMERAS. I asked why. They said they tried a photography program with them for a while, but when they found out what they were taking pictures of, and how they were doing it, it wasn't appropriate at all so they banned any use of cameras at the camp. They were taking dirty pictures of each other.
Youth N Asia 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 Yeah, if nothing else these are girls with little to no morals. You might hook up. And if worse comes to worse...you can always quit
1234-5678 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 17 year old girls are my forte'. And $9 isn't even close to enough, I made $9 for easy ass data entry.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted August 31, 2004 Coming from someone here who deals with mentally troubled girls on a daily basis and is unemployed, I would love to do it for a job myself. Though of course, just be careful and don't do anything suspicious and you'll be fine. I remember there was this one girl in particular at the mental hospital I was at when I was younger that was a bit of a flirt. Hooked up with her like I did so many other of them at the place, and when I left, she called me and told me something about a relationship with one of the counselors. I talked to the counselor (who was a good friend of mine) and denied anything ever happening, but before you know it.. sexual harassment/statutory rape charge -> led to the guy losing his job there and the entire place getting a facelift and being taken over by different people. Stephen Joseph 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 Run. For 9 bucks an hour? You don't have a degree, but it shouldn't be beyond you with your college experience to find something at least 10 bucks and near a desk of sorts ... unless you plan on making a career out of counseling girls. What you do now sets up your resume for the future, so plan accordingly.
Youth N Asia 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 $10 an hour doesn't grow on trees or anything.
Zack Malibu 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 You know, my T.A. job dealing with the handicapped is a union position with full benefits, but I only get $9 an hour doing that. Seems to be the "starting rate" for this field. Were you getting any benefits with this job, or was it just your salary and that's it?
Downhome 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 Full benefits after 90 days, but they told me that they will not give me a raise no matter what, until I've been there for exactly one year. I think I might just go for a deputy position here in a local town, as I'm pretty sure I could land that if I talked to the right people. Decisions decisions. Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2004 I make pizzas for fat motherfuckers 15 hours a week and get paid $7.50 an hour for it. I'd take it. Beats having to make 12 large 5-topping pizzas in 3 minutes.
Downhome 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2004 I could also get a job at the shit plant making $8.50/hour. The jobs around here suck.
the max 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2004 You should move here, DH. I sent out my resume for jobs that I'm not even technically qualified for, and got four jobs for no less that $10/hr. My new job that I accepted on saturday pays a very nice salary with first-day benefits, and I have NO experience in that field.

Mole 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2004 Hmm, this sounds just like a place my Dad and Stepmom work at. It's called Waterford Country School and it deals with the same type of kids. My dad is a Social Worker though and obviously has a lot of experience, so it's kind of odd that they would offer you the job.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2004 You should move here, DH. You should move, period. At 24 you can afford to pull up roots and plop down anywhere that there's a better market. No way I'd take this job without a helluva lot of training. Even without the falsfied sexual harassment angle, it sounds like a deathtrap waiting to happen. Dr. Tom 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2004 I wouldn't take it. There are risks, which you've mentioned, and they aren't worth a measly wage like $9 an hour. Around here, most large warehouses hire for at least $10 an hour to start, and many start around $12. You have to have something like that near your area. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted September 1, 2004 ^That's what I do. $11 an hour isn't bad for a single guy, and I get paid that to help out big tobacco and flirt with factory chicks. Unless of course you're afraid of sweating or lifting something.
the max 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2004 Where the hell do you live? SW Florida. There's a ton of jobs here that pay well and are actually kind of fun. I turned down a position from Loomis Fargo (the armored car people) and a few others that I don't even remember, but most of them I wasn't even remotely qualified for. The job I got, repairing and installing satellite dishes, I have no qualifications for, but they hired me because they like my attitude and think I have potential. So, they're giving me a paid week of training, putting me up in a hotel in Miami and paying me to drive there. If I were you, I'd get out of where you are now, because it seems like there's nothing there for work.
