Sure, for a few years the team really wasn't too good (or in 1998 case, sucked), but the management was able to turn some prospects into big players with time invested into them. Of course, the owner is still looking to cut off high priced players. They lost Pudge after last years World Series, and now it seems like Armando Benitez (who I think has 41 saves this year) is probably gone after this season too. Probably wouldn't been on the postseason roster if Alex Fernandez wasn't injured. I'd be happy that they weren't the dregs of the league, but I wouldn't be throwing a party. In the end, it was just a longer choke than expected. Some fans are satisfied when their team isn't dead last (Tampa Bay). Some are happy if they're a little bit better than last year (Detroit). Some are happy if they at least have meaningful games in August (Texas). And then there are fans that are happy with their team making the playoffs or world series or what ever even when they don't win (Atlanta) And then there's me. I feel that if you are playing a game to win something, anything short of winning that means you have failed. It wasn't that I was happy, I mean, when they lost I teared, wouldn't say cried, but you know, a tear here and there. Yeah, well Benitez is almost assuredly gone, but he honestly priced himself out of South Florida. He is arguably the best closer in MLB this year. But, the Marlins are doing their best to keep payroll at a manageable level. I believe they are going to go after Carl Pavano very aggressively to keep him in South Florida (especially if he is Cy Young). Mike Lowell is eligbile for free agency now that the stadium won't be in place by November 1, but he has a player option and is likely to take it to stay with the team at least one more year. The stadium is only $30 million away from reality, which is likely to come by Jan 1, which means the Marlins will have a new stadium by 2007, and will actually be able to turn a profit when they escape Wayne Huizenga's stranglehold on Pro Player stadium. To be fair to the guy, while he was never anything special, this year has just been an absolute nightmare. He isn't this bad a pitcher and I hope he works himself out. It still surprises me that he's still around. Steinbrenner kicked Contreras BUTT to the Chicago White Sox for not being able to pitch under pressure, but Heredia sticks around despite not pitching good period. Tony Saunders was the #1 pick in the Expansion draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. At the time, he looked like a decent prospect, probably comparable to a young Matt Clement, or maybe Victor Zambrano. Lots of strikeouts, but he struggled with control. To say Saunders disappeared or faded away is an understatement. Saunders suffered one of the most horrific injuries in the history of baseball. On May 26, 1999, Saunders broke his humerus bone in the act of throwing a pitch. For those of you who remember Dravecky's injury, it is the same thing. Saunders did attempted a comeback, but suffered the same injury and was forced into retirement.
