Vs. Jushin Liger at SuperBrawl II - one of the first wrestling matches I ever saw and the one that got me hooked for life.

"I respect you, bookerman", obviously, as well as the entire legendary 'for real' backstage shenanigans he was pulling on WCW before, during and after the angle. It was the ultimate "fuck you" a dissatisfied employee ever worked on an employer.

 

Canadian Stampede. Watching Pillman having the time of his life in that match - soaking up the cheers, taking liberties with Ken Shamrock - the guy has an ear-to-ear shit-eating grin the whole way through, is obviously just loving the whole experience. It's heartbreaking watching someone so full of life knowing just three months later he'd be gone forever.

I always liked the Pillman/Goldust feud, one of the first times Russo would use his "wife/girlfriend leaves her man because he loses a match and then ends up turning on him" storyline, though this didn't get that far.

I liked his heel turn in 1992 (Clash XX). Good stuff w/ him running down the Armstrong family while Jesse Ventura actually plays it straight and IIRC, sorta sides w/ Armstrong a bit.

I loved his transformation into the "Loose Cannon". I was ten years old at the time, and just starting to realize that it was OK to like heels, but throughout early '95 I was very disappointed to see that my favorite WCW wrestler was jobbing in the opening matches of PPV's. So when he helped Anderson beat Flair, I was so happy that he was going to be part of a big storyline. At the time, I thought that Pillman and Anderson were going to be the "good guys" in that feud, but I was wrong. His unpredictable antics helped to make an incredibly WCW upper card scene worth paying attention to. When he came to ECW, I remember someone having a "Pillman...Don't Work Me" sign and I was wondering how they knew that he was going to be there. (I wasn't aware of ECW's large online fanbase or the "smark" community at the time.) Of course, I was very perplexed by his "smart mark" promo, as it would be years before I had any idea what he was talking about. And I was so excited when he came to WWF. Sadly, he only had a little more than a year there before he passed away. I'll never forget sitting in my living room and seeing my brother come out of his room saying, "Brian Pillman's dead!" It was so shocking and it's so sad that he never knew that his wife was pregnant when he died. It's weird to think what kind of crazy stuff he would have pulled in the "attitude" era, when with his personality, he could have been HUGE. Sadly, we'll never know. Yes, I know he wasn't a "good worker" after his car accident, but sometimes there's more to a wrestler than that.

Many of you know he's my all time favorite wrestler (my 2 year old pooch is actually named Pillman). So while it'd be tough to pick a sole favorite moment, here's a few of my standouts:

 

The interference/turn on Ric Flair at Fall Brawl '95

 

The WWF Press Conference

 

Anything and everything Hollywood Blondes. Greatest tag team ever, IMO.

 

The Liger matches.

 

The Flair match that "made" him in WCW.

 

Attacking the fan on Shotgun Saturday Night.

 

ECW Debut and buildup against Douglas (another favorite of mine).

In 1989, IIRC, he had some really good matches with Lex Luger. He was fantastic in the ring for the most part as "Flyin' Brian". And who doesn't love the Hollywood Blondes?

 

This may be stupid, but what was the actual cause of death for Pillman? Did he OD?

WOW I remember this like it was yesterday cant believe 7 years.

 

I didn't watch the BAdd blood show so I didnt know until next morning at school when I went online and found out (on the wcw website no less)

 

this always bothered me as I was a big pillman fan since his days in the lightheayweight division of wcw and the liger matches.

 

 

I did my 11th grade research paper on Pillman (we needed to do something on any person and the only caveat was that they were dead so) and I am really proud of that. It was only a 5 page paper and I basically summarized his life and career highlights. sadder more is while working on the paper(in april/may 99), owen hart died.

 

We still miss you Brian

The other big "Fuck You" to WCW, of course being them forcing him into a 30-minute match against Johnny B. Badd, and him turning it into a damn good match.

 

Pillman was the man. Always.

That wasn't really a fuck you. Badd was a pretty good worker before getting hammered with injuries. 20-30 minute matches were kinda standard for WCW.

 

My favorite moment? God It's almost impossible...but I have a moment outside the wrestling environment that stands out so well.

 

In 1992, just before his heelturn. Me and My father were pumping gas at a gas station early in the morning on the way to a baseball game in cleveland and Pillman himself was inside the center when I walked in and I saw him and I can't remember what he brought but he was in line and i was young at the time, I was 7 at the time and I simply kinda shouted "Hey! Brian Pillman!" and he chuckled as he turned around and had this huge fucking grin on his face and went "yeah thats me" and i simply said "Hi." and he nodded his head back. He paid for his stuff and as he walked out he said "You be good kid".

Actually, it was meant to be a "fuck you" of sorts. Because those in power at the time felt both men were overrated, the idea of giving them 30 minutes was to 'expose' them as not being as talented as people thought they were. Obviously, that failed misereably.
