Pitchfork Media lists top 50 worst guitar solos

Recommended Posts

43. "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd

Soloist: David Gilmour

Album: The Wall

Year: 1979

Right here is the real reason that this list is a fucking JOKE. "Comfortably Numb" is one of the finest solos of all-time, and is probably David gilmour's most well-know guitar work. It's not my favourite solo of his, but it's an outstanding solo none the less.

What redbaron didn't post was their reasons for choosing the list.

The Comfortably Numb solo was apparently pieced together from several different takes because Gilmour couldn't get it right, hence its inclusion.

For the record it's my favourite PF solo. Pitchfork have no idea with this list.

Of course, they don't even have their facts right.

Gilmour pieced solos together because he wanted to make something that would be "impossible to perfectly replicate live", not because all his material was flawed.

Then it's fitting, and can't really be a truly bad solo because it fits the BAD music. Case in point: any of the solo's on Nevermind The Bollocks. The solo's are crap, but they fit perfectly with the music.

So I take it by crap you mean "simple".

If so, I agree, because I'd rather listen to the "solo" (lead guitar/whatever) from Teen Spirit than a bunch of that awful Wanking Phish or Grateful Dead crap.

Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia are/were both extremely good guitarists...

I never said that they weren't talented.

Teen Spirit doesn't really have an extended solo in it per se, but just a little section of the song where the guitar does some licks while the drums and bass still essentially go forth. To me, a really BAD solo is one that just stops a song dead in its tracks.

I was surprised that some of the stuff Tony Iommi did on the first Sabbath album wasn't listed. Thing is, there's so much mindless soloing on that album that it's hard to narrow it to one song. I love old school Sabbath but there are parts of that 1st album that drive me crazy.

And since no one has the balls to do it, I will stand up for the Scorpions. No One Like You is a cool song.

Yes it is.

Sucker in a 3-Piece isn't that great anyways, but I mean, for the worst Van Halen lick/riff, Human Beings is the worst.

My whole point is why get all that fired up over a list produced by an anti-guitarist site? Too elite for elitists, indeed.

Its more comical than anything else.

And yes, guitar solos should fit the song, not interfere with the message that the song is trying to convey. But then again, I just might still be on a high from meeting Joe Satriani Wednesday night, so don't mind me.

Edit: By the way, the "solo" in Teen Spirit was more of a harmony than anything else, as it was replicating the vocal line in the pre-chorus. I like it because its just a minimalist approach to a guitar solo. If the really wanted to put a "bad" solo on there, they should have put In Bloom in there. That was a rambling, disjointed solo if there ever was one. But then again, perhaps that was the point.

Not like you can ask Kurt about it, considering he's dead and all.

Guest GreatOne

I always thought when when Metallica would do Harvester Of Sorrow live and Kirk went off and did his own thing instead of the regular solo was a WTF moment.
