The ALCS: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox

Recommended Posts

Both teams have high payroll, yes, but it seems like there is more of a homegrown and team sense in Boston, whereas New York just becomes a conglomoration of the Super Powers, especially when they get Randy Johnson next year, among the other pickups I am sure they will get win or lose.

Varitek - Seattle Mariners

Millar - Florida Marlins

Bellhorn - Oakland Athletics (surprise, surprise)

Cabrera - Montreal Expos

Mueller - San Francisco Giants

Ramirez - Cleveland Indians

Damon - Kansas City Royals

Nixon - Boston Red Sox

Ortiz - Seattle Mariners (signed as a free agent in 1992)

Schilling - Boston Red Sox (originally drafted by Boston)

Pedro - Los Angeles Dodgers

Arroyo - Pittsburgh Pirates

Timlin - Toronto Blue Jays

Foulke - San Francisco Giants

I know these guys all came from other teams, I guess I just worded it funny. My point is, who knew of Varitek as a Mariner? Who knew of Millar as a Marlin or Mueller as a Giant? Very few unless you followed the team. Take a look at the Yankees team and you knew who mostly everyone was from their pre-Yankee career.

There has to be some sort of "b" involved in The failure of the Sox for Game 7.

That means Bellhorn "Buckners" it. Bottom 9th, 2 out. Jeter on 3rd, 5-4 Game. A-Rod hits a weak chopper, Bellhorn scoops it and loses the grip. Jeter scores. Sheffield Homers. Yankees Win. Bellhorn never plays in Boston again.

Bubba Crosby? Eh.

I'm pretty damn nervous here. I was ultra pissed when they lost those 2 straight games at Boston, and yesterday was just another lost opportunity. I really don't know how i'm going to watch this tonight.

It's like last year, and I hope the result is the same as last year, where I was shaking nervously watching the game. It's that big.

I'm not going to make any predictions, and if the Sox win, good for them. I won't be angry at them, but I do know i'd probably be sad as fuck.

But hopefully the Brown gets some good innings in, and they get to Lowe or Wakefield early. This game's going to be huge.

BTW, A-Rod and Shef have to step it up.

Schilling was just on the Jim Rome show talking about the "day after" with his ankle, and he verbally blasted A-Rod for his batting the ball out of Arroyo's hand, calling him "classless and bush league" and saying "You'd never ever see Jeter do that"

Beautiful

Whatever. If someone like Bill Mueller or Tim Wakefield had said that, i'd actually mean something.

He seriously needs to stop trying to hit everything out of the state. They need to rack up more base hits, especially with, I dunno, runners on?

Sound like Tim McCarver here, but it's true. Yesterday's 8th inning should have been the inning in which they would take the lead. A-Rod and Sheff screwed that up. I don't know what to think. I'm probably taking this more seriously than anyone else (maybe even Anglesault) although I just don't post as much when a game that important is going on.

Baseball is too much. What a great sport.

I really don't know. Mussina would have been great, but since we now play like 3 games in one day, he'll probably be available out of the bullpen if needed. Although doubtful. He's like on 2 days rest?

El Duque might even be available. Vazquez maybe. The thing is, Javier threw 100 pitches, and Brown had an early exit. If Torre hadn't used Sturtze, he wouldn't have been so bad. And Loaiza pitched great in his last outing.

This is gutwrenching, and the game hasn't even started.

Why wouldn't Javy be avaliable?

I he started, and if he pitches, it'll be out of the bullpen, he'll be pitching on 4 days rest.

El Duque was up in the bullpen in the 8th last night, so he'll be avaliable too.

Moose will probably be available. And I don't want Gordon in the 8th with a lead. Let Moose be our set up man tonight. I want Mo pitching ONE inning tonight. This two inning save thing isn't working for him anymore.

The sucky thing about a game 7 is is doibtful for one team to win in a blowout. Pitchers are hooked so easily, its impossible to get on anybody for a lot of runs.

And I just don't see anyway that Brown is getting outs tonight.

I just can't picture it.

you forgot Derek Lowe as a Mariner. Of course people who ranted and raved about how dumb the M's were to trade Lowe during his hot streak forget that he wasn't exactly great shakes when he was there (Lowe 'and outside'). Varitek agreed, Lowe I could give two flops about.

And I always was under the impression that Ortiz went for Roberto Kelly, I've also heard that it was for Dave Hollins. Either trade sucked in all honesty.

I honestly don't understand why the Sox are having Lowe start Game 7 instead of Wakefield. For the most part, Wakefield has been pretty decent at stifling the Yankees - why would Francona decide to pitch Lowe instead?

I really hope Francona knows something that we don't. I really don't like this situation at all.

I think the reason they may not be starting Wakefield is that they don't want to take Varitek out of the line-up and are afraid that he can't catch the knuckleball (which he showed in game 5).

Well, it's not like Varitek has really proven his worth in this series anyway. He almost blew the game for the Sox in Game 5 with his lackluster catching with Wakefield - and he pretty much hasn't hit worth a damn in the entire series. I think the Sox should try to take a risk tonight: Pitch Wakefield and put Mirabelli on catcher. Then keep Varitek on reserve just in case. You could either use him as a pinch hitter later on, or replace Mirabelli with Vairtek once they take Wakefield out of the game.

Despite the fact that Varitek may catch much better with Lowe than Wakefield, I honestly feel Wakefield would be a much stronger pitcher tonight against the Yanks than Lowe.

Guest Smell the ratings!!!

i'm sure we'll see Lowe and Wakefield. Even if Lowe doesn't get crushed, he'll be out by the 5th. He just threw 90 pitches on Sunday. (same with Vasquez if he plays)

Lowe will be out by the end of the third, whether they touch him up or not. Wakefield will probably go another 3. It's going to be one of those games where everyone pitches for a bit, not letting anyone get too tired. I wouldn't be surprised to see seven or eight pitchers for Boston tonight.

Well it is kind of sad that the only joy you get out of baseball is seeing the Yankees win.

I'm not going to enjoy seeing them lose.

I think he just meant it's sad that you can't find any joy in the game other than the Yankees winning. As in, you can't enjoy a good game between two good teams, even if you don't care one way or the other about either of them.

Lowe will win tonight...I predict 3-2 or something close like that. It just seems like it's going to happen that way.

However, I'd like to see another extra innings game and have a "B" (Bellhorn?) fuck up something to cost the game for his team.

God God GOD, please fastforward this to 11:30, so

I can see if it's Ol' Blue Eyes or Liza crooning on the

Stadium's PA... please let it be Liza. Just this once,

Frank won't mind.

I have a feeling I will throw up a few times during

tonight's game... it's two hours away and I'm

already jittery. Someone... hold me.

Boston area posters- where are you watching the game?

Home? Bar?

Mussina will pitch before Quantrill or maybe even Gordon. In fact, I think Mussina may be put in early if Brown struggles.

I totally forgot Mussina. Slide him in Gordon's position.
