Bush posts plan for mandatory gov't service

I think colleges love nothing more than to waste money. My friend works at the Ohio State library and it's insane what they'll pay for a science journal subscription. I mean there's no need to drop 10k on 5 journals that 4 students will need a few times.

Hell, how much do they spend on assorted speakers? I know Moore is about $30K a pop, I doubt the other big names used are less than $20K.

I know Ohio U. spent an assload of money to release a ton of squirrels onto campus to look more like Harvard.

Of course the damned things attack people now.

Title IX needs some reworking too as that leeches a lot of money as well. But that could easily be fixed if you don't include college football.

Wait, am I reading something wrong here, or was this thing about COMMUNITY SERVICE? Ala, planting trees, or picking up trash on the road, or feeding the homeless....etc? Where does it say military service? So what does this have to do with a draft?

My highschool required Seniors to do 8 hours of community service. What is the big deal here?

I hate to do it, but let's play role reversal.

Bush puts up something on his website very similar to Kerry's. You really don't think this would be everywhere like the Pentagon posting about filling up draft board positions on the internet were (which, by the way, have been empty since 1999 when the 20-year term limit for those positions began to hit) with the Chicken Littles screaming "THE DRAFT IS COMING THE DRAFT IS COMING!"

Hell, they turned Stop-Loss into speculation about a new draft even though the military has been using it since the Gulf War I.

Well I suspect that perhaps some folks would play out the scenario you just laid out, however the problem is, it says right there in the original post that Kerry is talking about Community Service.

So what is the problem with mandatory community service? High schools in Ontario require forty before high school is done as well.

Yeah, thankfully I got out before that was implemented.

That just blows my mind. Who other than former Presidents are worth that kind of money?

Whoops did I say Bush, I really meant John "Backdoor Draft" Kerry.

Oh no! It looks like the link is down! Could it be because it would hurt Kerry's chance to wallow in the condesending demagoguery of scaring young people from voting for the Draft Loving Bush? Nah.

Don't worry though, you can read the real deal here.

As part of his 100 day plan to change America, John Kerry will propose a comprehensive service plan that includes requiring mandatory service for high school students and four years of college tuition in exchange for two years of national service.

MANDATORY SERVICE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

* Service Should Be a Graduation Requirement: John Kerry believes that knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship - including the duty to serve your community - are as important to American adults as knowing how to read and do math. Combined with a curriculum that teaches students about democracy, citizenship and civic participation, this high school service requirement will be a rite of passage for every young person in the country. As President, John Kerry will ensure that every high school student in America does community service as a requirement for graduation.

Amongst all the rampant speculation in this thread, NOWHERE in that statement does the word "military" or anything related to a draft or service appear.

This is all right-wing overreaction. I can almost picture you guys jumping up and down rushing to the CE folder and pointing fingers at Kerry over this piece of information which is practically nothing if you actually read it. Community service is already required in many high schools as a requisite for graduation. Kerry just wants to make it so more schools do it, which is a good deed and a nice commitment, regardless of how many teenagers would groan at the thought of having to do actual work.

Also, in a slightly off-topic and kind of ironic twist to all this, I was driving by Miami Senior High on the way to my school the other day, and literally RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET from the high school was a group of State Prisoners cleaning up the streets (literally). I thought this was kind of funny for some reason.

The answer to this is simple. Bush is the President of the United States, and is in a position where he needs to defend his policies and ideals more than attack Kerry's, since Bush is the one trying to keep his job, not Kerry. We don't know what Kerry is capable or incapable of doing other than what he's said as President of the United States, while we obviously know what Bush has and can do.

Next topic, please.

Deliciously hilarious.

You know, if this is all right-wing propaganda --- why did Kerry take it off of his web site?

It just baffles me that one side hasn't ONCE uttered ANY desire for ANY required service of any sort and one side does --- but the one who is painted as "wanting a draft" is the former one.

"It's just right-wing rage". Funny how many things fall into that.

Political violence? Right-wing propaganda.

Voter registration fraud (a big problem in CO)? Right-wing propaganda.

Um, even the cached site address indicates that this was just an idea for a community service initiative.

This doesn't even qualify as a non-story.

When compared to the "Bush wants a draft" stories --- it's bulletproof.

...What are you talking about and how does it relate to the fact that you all foolishly thought this was important?

Cerebus pointed out that Bush is getting tarred with the "He wants a draft" story --- yet, only one candidate has ANY desire for mandatory service.

That one isn't Bush.

If Bush was wise, at the debate, he'd say that, if re-elected, he will never allow the Democrats to re-institute a draft.

But you are clear on the fact that this is about community service, right?

I am clear that Kerry wants mandatory gov't service --- and it's not a huge stretch to go to OTHER things...

Its not military service Mike....

It's far closer than anything Bush has stated or suggested...

Well I dont see a draft happening...it really is a moot point...why continue to discuss it?

And this is clearly nothing as well...community service isnt a draft either.

Further discussion of both meaningless topics is ridiculous.
