Read all about it here.

Interestingly, Kryptonsite has reported that Tom Welling was offered the role, and that a "T. Welling" playing the role of a certain "Kent" is on the casting list for Batman Begins. Personally, I don't think WB needs to rush out a Superman movie, though they apparently feel differently.

If this casting is legit, I like the fact they're going with an unknown. It worked out pretty well the last time they did it for a big-screen Superman movie, after all.

Discuss.

...I actually don't like that, I would have preferred if they waited for Tom Welling to accept or something. And...as said, I don't think they should be rushing to get a movie out...they have plenty of time, especially since Smallville has what? At least 2 seasons left. Possibly another, or more.

I like the fact that the writers have been reading Superman comics for ideas. Plus, we may get General Zod in the new movie.

KNEEL BEFORE ZOD~! :)

Worried about the acting?!?!

What, Tom Welling would have brought "acting cred" to this flick?!? No offense to the guy, I'm sure that he's great on Smallville, but what has he ever done that should warrant him the starring role in what will likely be THE summer movie....well, whatever year this film is coming out?

Not that this "unknown" guy deserves it more, I'm just saying.

Tom Welling isn't even as good a Superman as Dean Cain, regardless of what the Smaville fanboys think.

Agreed, but Tom is playing a different version of Superman. Hell, Tom Welling isn't even playing Superman...he's playing whiner boy Clark Kent.

Also, Zod? No. Terrance Stamp is Zod. I will not accept anyone else as Zod. No one else is worthy of Zod.

There has been talk of bringing back Terrence Stamp to do something as Zod. Supposedly, this new movie follows the storyline of the first two Superman films (except that they didn't happen in the seventies and eighties); Superman is supposed to have been missing for six years.

Oh!

Well then, I'm all for it. :)

But no Stamp, no Zod.

Routh is born in 1979? Yeesh.. I'm annoyed that someone younger than me is being cast to play Superman in a movie that's supposed to be a continuation of the original films.

Well, the WB has OFFICIALLY announced that Brandon Routh will play Superman/Clark Kent.

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Brandon Routh, a 25-year-old native of Iowa with television and film acting experience, has been cast as The Man of Steel in the Studio's upcoming Superman epic, to be directed by Bryan Singer. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production for Warner Bros. Pictures.

The untitled Superman movie is expected to begin principal photography in Australia early next year for release in summer, 2006. It is produced by Jon Peters, Bryan Singer and Gilbert Adler from a screenplay by Michael Dougherty & Dan Harris. No other casting has been announced.

Stated Alan Horn, President and Chief Operating Officer of Warner Bros., "We are so pleased to have put this extraordinary team of filmmakers and talent together and to be moving forward with a project we've all anticipated so much. I think we're going to make a Superman movie that all of us can be very proud to bring to our audience around the world."

Routh was chosen for the role of Superman following an exhaustive search that spanned the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. Thousands of candidates were interviewed before the final selection was made.

Singer commented on his choice of a star, saying "Contrary to speculation, it was always my absolute intention to hire an unknown for this role. Brandon is an extremely fine actor who possesses the physical qualifications of Clark Kent/Superman. But he also embodies the legacy and history of this character in a way that makes me certain he's the right choice."

"We respect and appreciate the intense interest that our fans around the world have in Superman, and we went everywhere in search of a talented actor who would represent his look, character and presence," said Robinov. "We think Brandon is a gifted young performer who can re-energize this iconic character and excite new audiences about the legend of Superman."

Routh's television credits include One Life to Live, Gilmore Girls, Will & Grace, and Cold Case. He recently wrapped his first feature role in the upcoming film Deadly, starring opposite Laura Prepon.

Hopefully this guy can pull off the role well. He's certainly got some big shoes (boots?) to fill. But if Singer is confident in him, then so am I. With this in production and Batman Begins coming out, it should be a good year for DC super-hero movies. Dreck like CINO is best off forgotten. Ain't It Cool News also has information on the subject.

I'll have faith in this decision.

Singer took a risk on Hugh Jackman for "X-Men", you see where that got him.
