Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2004 That Sergei link was hilarious, I completely fell for it. A big Samoan who has a background in BJJ but has finished all his fights with punches? Could be something to look out for, especially against a guy from Korea that no one has heard of. Is Korea even a country? It sounds made-up.
Styles 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2004 Interesting, the main matches should kick ass, but there seems to be a lot of filler on the undercard, especially for Pride.
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2004 You're going to hell for that Elm-elianenko line you brilliant son of a bitch.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2004 Bah, this is a good undercard. Colossus vs. Aleks is going to be sweet *just* for the fact that these two guys are BEASTS. Overeem is going to GO TO TOWN on Kanehara (FLYING KNEES~!) Since Fedor and Kharitonov, I'm now always interested in new Russian fighters, so I can't wait for Sergeys PRIDE debut. Mark Hunt is going to slaughter Bobish, always good. Mu Bae Choi (or Choi Mu Bae...) http://www.susumug.com/fighter_photo_windo...fighter_id=1387 nuff said I am interested in this other fighter as well. It's always fun to see new talent, especially when it compliments some big names. And then you have FOUR awesome matches.
Guest CurryMan Report post Posted October 26, 2004 One of the more fun, interesting sites to pay attention to is JRB in Japan. It's basically where people interact on the polls and say who they would put on money on for fights or wrestling matches. I'll just highlight http://hpcgi2.nifty.com/JRB/JRBCGI/dse0410p28.cgi some of the interesting results</a> currently posted. Latest update from 4:30 AM on 10/26 (Japanese time). Note - the higher the percentage, the higher the chance people think they will win: Vanderlei Silva - 92.5%, Rampage Jackson - 7.5% Choi Mu Bae - 91.9%, Soa Palelei - 8.1% Emelianenko Alexander - 90.6%, James Thompson - 9.4% Ricardo Arona - 82.5%, Sergey Ignatev - 17.5% Mark Hunt - 76.9%, Dan Bobish - 23.1% Mirko Cro Cop - 62.5%, Josh Barnett - 37.5% Dan Henderson - 60%, Kazuhiro Nakamura - 40% Alistair Overeem - 60%, Hiromitsu Kanehara - 40% Heath Herring - 50.6%, Hiro Yokoi - 49.4% Some analysis on the polling trends compared to yesterday's numbers. Based on the Japanese betting trends, the numbers for Jackson, Nakamura and Barnett are sliding downwards - and fast. This is reflective of the internal attitude inside of DSE, where they are very confident that Mirko is going over on Barnett. The shocker is Rampage - because he went from 12% down to 8% in less than a day. If you are DSE, you have to be worried about fan perception of your main event. If the Japanese aren't buying your main event, it means you'll have a harder time selling tickets. Yes, Kevin Randleman went into his 4/25 Saitama fight against Mirko Cro Cop with only a 4% chance with the Japanese public to win, but Randleman's fight was part of a stacked tournament card - and not the main event. We have another Silva main event where the fans are sending the message that they think the main event is basically a squash match, which in turn means that the house in Saitama on 10/31 could certainly be down. The Mirko/Barnett numbers continue to fluctuate, but the Herring/Yokoi numbers are staying the same. It's the toughest match on this entire card to predict a winner, and probably will turn out to be a dark horse candidate for best bout on the show. Remember, these numbers are Japanese-based and conducted by JRB (bettors), not us. - http://puroresupower.com/

RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2004 Barnett is training with the rAw team, I doubt he'll be looking to throw with Cro. But he does train with Mo Smith, and though Mo ain't Cro, he's still a helluva lot better than anyone who faced Cro Cop trained with. This fight all depends on takedowns. If Cro Cop's takedown defense is good for this match, he should win, either by KO or decision. If Barnett's takedowns are good, he should be able to win by sub or decision. Very tought match to call, but I'm going with Cro Cop. As for Rampage/Silva, everybody wants Rampage to win, but Silva should still take it.

Very tought match to call, but I'm going with Cro Cop. As for Rampage/Silva, everybody wants Rampage to win, but Silva should still take it. Everyone but me that is. I am looking forward to Silva fulfilling his prediction of "Quinton becoming his next Sakuraba." Josh Barnett made comments to SRS-DX in Japan about his upcoming fight with Mirko Cro Cop on 10/31 in Saitama. Barnett said that Mirko's weak point is that he doesn't have great stamina, that he will KO Mirko in the 1st round, and that he will convert Mirko fans into Josh fans. The lack of stamina is what I mean by not taking him seriously. Mirko has never shown signs of gassing, even in his long, drawn out marathon fights (the ones that go past the first round). Found on the same page, the actual interview with PPH is here: Are you ready and prepared for the 10/31 fight? You know I'm ready. What has your training been like? Currently training in Los Angeles with Erik Paulson and the rAw team, along with Ivan Salaverry and Maurice Smith. Barnett feels he is in great shape. Do you take high kicks in training (to prepare for Mirko)? I don't take high kicks! Mirko can kick like a maniac. How do you avoid that left high-kick? Keep your hands up and work on footwork. Everyone who gets nailed with Mirko's left high kick either is standing still or going backwards. Thoughts on Internet reaction towards fight? Barnett hasn't paid any attention to the Internet reaction, but as far as he is concerned, the more people are looking and the talking, the better it is. He doesn't put a lot of credence to the Internet reaction for or against him. Has your diet changed? Josh makes sure to eat six times a day, watch carefully to avoid food with processed sugars, and drink lots of water. Trying to monitor what he eats. Thoughts on recent New Japan results (Fujita jobs to Sasaki in two minutes)? It wasn't a very appealing result. What is your current status with New Japan? Josh is representing New Japan and the NJ flag on the PRIDE 10/31 Saitama show. Maybe he's not a trueborn NJ native, but "he's company." A pretty good relationship with New Japan, and a big reason for it is that the checks are clearing! Thoughts on the Kohsaka/Waterman Pancrase 11/7 Tokyo Bay NK Hall fight? Barnett doesn't think Waterman has what it takes to beat TK. TK deserves to have a belt around his waist. Waterman would definitely win the war of bending frying pans, however. If he (Barnett) wanted to go around breaking household appliances and notebooks to get over, he doesn't really see the value. It would be the battle of destroying frying pans (Waterman) vs. destroying phone books (Barnett). Mirko Cro Cop has had 9 fights in the last 13 months (and 11 fights in the last 16 months). Is ring rust an issue with you? Barnett feels he didn't have ring rust against Jimmy Ambriz or Rene Rooze last May. If anything, Mirko keeping such a hectic schedule will be a detriment to him, especially if Mirko's fight against Barnett is a long fight on 10/31 in Saitama. Win or lose, Mirko will have a fight with Fedor on the table in the future. If you beat Mirko on 10/31 in Saitama, are you going to make a strong push to DSE and say, "Hey, I just knocked out your golden boy, I want a fight on the 31st"? Nothing he (Barnett) says is going to change that, that's the game (with promoters) over there. Nobody (fighters) has the pull to change the cards in Japan. He'll take whoever is left when the other fighters cut either other to shreds. I agree with RRR on how good the card will be, and I even think it has GCE(Greatest Card Ever) potential. Of course, the same can be said for every latest PRIDE event. One more piece of interesting news (yet again on the same magical front page at PPH): Our source also reiterated what our MMA insider stated about Mirko Cro Cop, which is that K-1 has gotten to him and made him an offer for the 12/31 Osaka Dome show. This hasn't been denied. In short, Mirko is leaving the door wide open if he receives a better offer money & fight-wise instead of the proposed 12/31 Saitama re-match against Vanderlei Silva. Because of this development, suddenly Barnett is the guy who DSE has to be concerned about protecting - because he's the guy who just signed a multi-fight deal, and Mirko could be independent very shortly. If Mirko truly becomes independent, this could be disastrous for his Japanese agent, Ken Imai, who DSE management trusts to keep Mirko with them for fights. If Imai can't keep Mirko committed past a per-fight deal, then problems could arise. The odds for Mirko/Silva on New Year's Eve are high, but the door is clearly open for K-1 to make a move. Tanigawa has been promising a "big surprise" for the 12/31 show, and this could be the opportunity.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2004 “The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson Overview: September 12th, 1999 – “Stigmata” and “The Sixth Sense” were on top of the box office. “Bailamos” by Enrique Iglesias was on top of the Billboard Charts. Wanderlei Silva made his PRIDE debut. However, unlike those who were on top on that day, Silva has managed to stay on top for FIVE YEARS. It is an unprecedented run of dominance that is unlikely to be matched ever again. UNDEFEATED after 20 matches in a PRIDE ring. These are BOXING numbers, people. And we’re not talking slouches either: Dan Henderson, Kazushi Sakuraba, Mirko Cro Cop, Quinton Jackson and Yuki Kondo are among those who got punished by the Axe Murderer. Wanderlei Silva is special. There is no doubt about it. Fearless. Tough. Well-Rounded. Quick. Sadistic. That last quality is what really separates Silva from the pack. He is a K-1 Level Striker. He has grappled with Olympic level Judo masters. But what makes him dangerous is when he fights, he intends to kill you. Silva represents something totally, utterly, unapologetically primal. He is raw, unbound, aggression. He is intensity personified. He is, without a doubt, the scariest man in Mixed Martial Arts. So why isn’t Quinton “Rampage” Jackson afraid? Why did Jackson get in Silvas face and not back down? Why, after taking almost 20 knees to the head and looking the devil in the eye and SMILE only to have the devil SMILE BACK, does Jackson return for more? Before, I –and Quinton- would have said “Greed”, “Pride”, and “Gluttony”. Being the champion means lots of money, lots of women, and lots of recognition; more than anyone one man could ever need. But today, “Rampage” is a changed man. He is a man who no longer fights for himself, but rather, he is one of God’s Soldiers now. In Silva Jackson see’s Satan and on Sunday, October 31st – the day of the dead, the holiest day of the week – Jackson will be looking to bring light into the darkness that has long covered the middleweight division… but he might need God’s helps to do it. Analysis: Their first fight is important, but I don't think it is integral to understand how their next fight will go. Last Year, both Jackson and Silva had to through tough competition to get the chance to fight one another. Jackson looked sluggish and tired while Silva looked well rested, despite having a longer match than Rampage. Jackson will now know to be more active on the ground to avoid getting stood up, he will be more prepared for Silvas submission skills. He will have trained specifically to face Wanderlei Silva, rather than Chuck Liddell (who are stylistically two very different stand up fighters with whom you use a completely different strategy against). Silva, on the other hand, really just has to be Silva and use his same gameplan as last time to get the win. If taken down, wait until ref stands back up. When stood up, destroy opponent. Silva's greatest strength is also his biggest weakness. As shown against Belfort, Sakuraba and Dan Henderson, Silva can be rocked when he rushes in. If you hit him on his jaw, he'll go down. Jackson has fabulous accuracy as-well-as really good defense standing and he shouldn't be afraid to stand with the Axe Murderer. The most important, as well as the hardest, thing Jackson must do is CONTROL THE PACE. In all the Silva matches I have seen, *he* is in control the whole time. Whether it's because he's so wild in the ring or because his opponent is timid, Silva dictates how the fight goes. Jackson needs to get in control right away; if that means rushing in crazier than Silva, so be it. If that means backing off from Silva and keeping him in check with low kicks as to slow the pace (and make for a boring fight), so be it. Rampage cannot afford to let Silva fight his fight. Unfortunately, Jackson doesn't train with anyone like Silva. He doesn't have someone who will go at 100mph and control the situation. Jackson will be working on how to block and counter the knee strikes, how to effectively use GnP, and how to avoid submissions, but he won't be working on controlling the pace of the fight and that is where he will lose. Because fighting Silva's fight at Silvas pace is where the fighters in those 20 other matches went wrong. It's a hard thing to do, and that's why Silva is so unbeatable. There has been one person who successfully did this and that was a young Vitor Belfort. And I believe there is one more person who can do this, and it is not Quinton Jackson, it is Randy Couture. Styles 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2004 Do you think we'll ever get to see Silva vs. Couture. I just don't see how it would happen, specifically which organization would get the fight. It would mean more in America, but UFC would never let Pride promote a US show with their top guy, and Pride wouldn't want their champion to be embarassed in UFC where Couture would have the advantage with the cage. I'd love to see it though...

Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted October 30, 2004 According to Puroresu Power (linking to some japanese article), new signee Rulon Gardner is going to be in attendance tomorrow night. I assume there will be some segment pimping him like they had for Hunt. Gardner? PRIDE? Twubbawho? Rulon Gardner, the Sydney Gold Medallist who almost lost his thumbs due to frostbite? I disagree with Steven on his logic sometimes, he seems to use a lot of "well, Dan could knock down Silva, and Nak ain't no Silva" and "Kevin knocked out Cro Cop, and Josh is a much better striker then Kevin." I have to say that since there are so many other factors to consider as to why these things happened, it's not accurate to just look at them as a way to measure ability. Same thing goes for Bas on Nak not being able to take down Dan. Dan was taken down by Murilo who is not nearly as strong a wrestler as he is, and also by Shungo Oyama. I think Nak has better takedowns then both those guys, so my conclusion is that it's foolish again to not take into account things like stamina, weight, momentum, etc. Nak can very well take down Dan at any point, regardless of how Bas feels. Still love those two guys though. No matter how much I warm up to Mauro, the chemistry I feel from them even only on this radio show is unreal.
