AC/DC Honored with Street Name in Australia

MELBOURNE (Billboard) - AC/DC formed in Sydney in 1974, but it's the Australian city of Melbourne that has honored the veteran hard rock band with its own street.

On Oct. 1, Melbourne City Council renamed Corporation Lane in the city center ACDC Lane, at a ceremony attended by 500 fans. A bagpiper played the 1975 track "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'N' Roll)" at the festivities, while local bands played other AC/DC material for five hours in a nearby bar. Recording commitments prevented the band from attending, but guitarist Angus Young sent a message: "Melbourne was our stomping ground in the early days. If you could make it in Melbourne, you could make it anywhere else in the world."

Present at the ceremony were Fifa Riccobono, CEO of AC/DC's Australian label, Albert Productions, and TV presenter Ian "Molly" Meldrum, an early supporter of the band.

The council debated the name change for several months, and it proceeded despite local protests from a restaurant and a Christian group.

This is great and all, but ACDC isn't a very good street name. They should've been alittle more creative when picking a name associated with Ac/Dc. Something like Bon Scott Avenue. However, I'd still love to have an ACDC Lane street sign.

I bet it will be renamed in a few years after the city has to keep replacing stolen signs.

I want a MP3 of that

No way will anyone be getting that sign off. It's bolted, glued, the works - to a wall, not a post.

And yes, I concur with Adelaide.

I'll rank the capitals from worst to best (never been to Hobart):

Adelaide

Canberra

Darwin

Brisbane

Melbourne

Perth

Sydney

Canberra at least has the parliament and the war memorial, plus a few other good places. I think Adelaide is the most boring city I've ever been to.

"ACDC Lane" doesn't flow whatsoever. I agree with Satanico - it would have been better had they named it something related to the band that sounded good, not necessarily their title.

Yeah, that looks about right. I've never been to Darwin or Adelaide though (I'm in Queensland). Darwin gives off the image of being boring as hell and only a capital because the Northern Territory needs one, and I don't know just *what* to think of Adelaide.

I'd rank Canberra higher if only for it being not much more than plentiful access to both pornography and fireworks, at least the last time i was there it was. That alone should put it above the more non-descript capitals, but either way Adelaide is the worst.

When I was in Canberra in 2001, I just remember it being really, really neat (it is the nation's capital) but missing out on a lot of things. Even so, it was still nice to look at from Telstra Tower.
