And So it Begins

Recommended Posts

Rotation

Barry Zito

Rich Harden

Joe Blanton

Danny Haren

Dan Meyer (might start year in Triple-A)

Bullpen

Octavio Dotel

Kiko Calero

Ricardo Rincon

Chad Bradford

Justin Duchscherer

Juan Cruz (could be in rotation if Meyer is in AAA)

Keiichi Yabu (same story as Cruz)

Other bullpen options: Seth Etherton, Tim Harikkala, Tyler Johnson, Chris Mabeus

Tyler Johnson has to stay in the majors the whole year, since he was a Rule V draft pick, which means the A's are going to be stuffed with pitchers. I'm guessing that Meyer gets some more seasoning in AAA...but that still leaves twelve spots for thirteen pitchers. (Etherton got guaranteed money, didn't he?)

Etherton has a minor league contract, as far as I know. The Athletics are free to option him to AAA. Same with Calero, Rincon, Duchscherer, Haren, Blanton, and Meyer. All of those guys can be optioned down to AAA, if need be. As for Tyler Johnson, the Athletics could elect to send him back to the Cardinals if they choose. Most Rule V draftees do not stick. If Johnson can not harness his control, the A's will let him go after Spring Training.

Duchscherer is out of options and he's too important to the bullpen anyways to send down. Blanton could be optioned if he struggles. Haren has already used up at least two options. I know Johnson is a Rule V pick but as things stand right now I don't think he'll make the team. If Meyer does start the year in Sacramento then that would open up a spot in the bullpen for Johnson. Etherton is the wild card in all of this but he's going to need a great spring to make the club. They have almost too much bullpen depth at this point so I could see someone being traded during the Spring. Chad Bradford would have been in the Eric Byrnes/Mike Cameron deal if it had happened.

Don't let Bob Barron see this thread, he'll have to post thirty times just to cover all his bases.

Yeah because with the thread only being 4 months old I'm sure he hasn't noticed it yet.

I was referring to the posting of Opening Day lineups, stud

I was looking at ESPN and noticed Rob Nen is still available.

What's the status on his shoulder?

I also would like the Braves to maybe try and get Burnitz and Ordonez. That would really upgrade the weak outfield

Guest Smell the ratings!!!

as unbelivable as it may seem, the Orioles may actually want Sosa. The proposed deal is Jerry Hariston and "various minor leaguers"

This should probably get it's own thread but since it's not official yet, apparantly WGN radio is reporting that that Sosa will be traded to the Orioles. They also say the Cubs have another deal on the table that will bring Aubrey Huff to Chicago.

Aubrey Huff to Chicago? That's a great trade. Well offensively it is. I'm not to sure on Huff's defensive capabilities in outfield, although i've heard they aren't the best, he's a solid offensive player.

I don't know about Sosa.

He's declined across the board over the course of the last 3 seasons. It's not even like he had one subpar season last year that could have just been a random fluke. Camden Yards would obviously pay to his strengths though.

This whole off season, its been "We are not going to overpay for anybody". It would be a real waste to pay a ton of money for Sosa after being conservative on everyone else all winter.

Saw that on ESPNews and they were are wondering what kind of a blow losing the Orioles "closer" would be to their pitching staff. And they were serious.

Isn't Huff an IF?

He was an outfielder before last year when he played third base. He's really a man without a set position but obviously he'd be a corner outfielder for the Cubs, if he's traded.

Yea, I saw that and was waiting for them to show a sign that they were being sarcastic.

so would it be premature for me to start printing "2005 NL Central Division Champion St. Louis Cardinals" shirts?

Aubrey Huff is solid enough to get the job done at the corner position.

But we have Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez at the corners. Add in Nomar and and Walker in the middle and we have a damn nice infield.

I'm really excited about this, if it happens. Huff has power to replace Sosa quite well but he's gonna have to learn to play left or right. Make it happen.

He has already played left field (I think it was left, one of the corner positions) with the Devil Rays. He'll fit in well with the Cubs. They need a lefty anyway, Jesus Christ i've never seen so many righties.

Patterson and Walker are the sole everyday lefties. It's nuts. After them it's right-handed all the way down the line. Glendon Rusch, bless his heart, was a passable lefty hitter at times.

I don't know if I or others brought it up already, but the Cubs won't be putting names on the home uniforms anymore because Hollandsworth and Garciaparra are too hard on the equipment manager. Greys and blues will still have names as per NL rules.

I bet that's the real reason Sammy Sosa wants to leave.

Yeah, i'll just never forget two years ago in the playoffs when I think the only lefty in the lineup was Randall Simon, and that was a platoon.

EDIT: And Kenny Lofton
