And So it Begins

I am with Czech, if I see one more post from Mik about the god of baseball I think I will puke. I do not even dislike the Marlins, but christ, he is just one player. Plus his stats will go way down playing in the Marlins big park. Coming on here is as bad as watching ESPN, only instead of the Patriots its Delgado.

Well, besides the Sosa trade is there really anything else happening in baseball right now?

Associated Press

SEATTLE -- Jeff Nelson joined the Seattle Mariners for the third time, agreeing Monday to a minor league contract.

2004 SEASON STATISTICS

GM W L Sv K ERA

29 1 2 1 22 5.32

The 38-year-old right-hander, who pitched for Seattle from 1992-95 and 2001-03, apologized Sunday for criticizing the team 1½ years ago, before he was traded to the New York Yankees.

"The whole hurdle was to get things the way they used to be. It was a big deal for me to do that," Nelson said. "The year and a half since it happened has weighed heavy on my heart and mind."

At the time of the criticism, Nelson was angry the Mariners didn't make any major moves at the trade deadline. Nelson met Sunday with Mariners president Chuck Armstrong and general manager Bill Bavasi, then met Monday with team chairman Howard Lincoln.

"I went to their office to say that I was truly sorry and to make sure they knew that," Nelson said. "They were very receptive and very happy to hear the things I had to say."

Nelson, who lives in the Seattle area during the offseason, said he struggled to get motivated during the offseason and was considering retirement if he could not find the right team and situation. He said the New York Mets showed interest.

"The teams interested weren't very appealing to me," Nelson said. "This is one of the places I get motivated to play easily."

Nelson holds the Seattle record for games pitched with 383 and has a 23-20 record with the Mariners.

"I grew up and went through the downs and ups this organization has felt," Nelson said. "I had some great times in New York, but this is my first love."

An All-Star for Seattle in 2001, Nelson is 47-41 overall in 690 major league games. He was 1-2 with a 5.32 ERA for Texas in 29 games last season, going on the disabled list twice due to injuries to his right knee and right elbow.

Nelson is a slider specialist but struggled with control last year. Left-handed batters hit .167 against Nelson last season and right-handers .224.

Sorry Phillies fans, but i just read that Cole Hamels broke his hand - out 3 months.

EDIT: And as more news comes in, it appears he broke his hand in a bar fight. Hello Brien Taylor 2.0.

No, he said coming on here and reading how great Delgado is as bad as watching ESPN talk about how great the Patriots is.

Well, it was believed that the Cubs would sign Burnitz as soon as the Sosa trade is official, but tonight Hendry called Boras and made an offer of reportedly 2 yrs/ 20 mil, and told Burnitz that if Maggs signs elsewhere, he's our guy. Dave Kaplan of WGN Radio all but guaranteed we'll know by dinner time tomorrow whether it'll be Maggs or Burnitz in right this year.

Burnitz in Chicago could potentially be a disaster. We all know the ball travels well in Coors but it's especially favorable to left handed hitters. Wrigley on the other hand is just the opposite as it can be very tough on left handed hitters. He'll be 36 and six years removed from his best season.

For what it's worth, Burnitz has compiled 180 at bats in Wrigley, with a .256 batting average, .357 OBP, and 14 home runs.

I only go in the baseball threads, I do not give a fuck about football, and almost never go in a football thread. Therefore I escape the verbal, and written, bj's the Patriots are given.

I thought the whole idea was to rid the Cubs of an over-35 rapidly declining right fielder.

I think people tend to underrate Burnitz, since he had such a poor season in New York in 2002. That season is the only season since 1997 that Burnitz failed to hit 30 home runs. Even considering Coors Field, Burnitz's OPS+ was better than Sosa's last season.

Sort of off topic, but has anyone seen those new Cubs wristbands that are basically like the Lance Armstrong bands? They're blue, have the Cubs logo and say "Believe" on them. I guess they were only available at the Cubs Convention, but they'll be putting out more eventually. Look pretty cool and I'd like to get one, but the prices for them on eBay are obviously borderline ridculous right now.

Baltimore Orioles signed MR Horacio Estrada to an MLC.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays signed MR Jesus Colome to a 1 year, $600K contract.

Boston Red Sox signed SP Jeremi Gonzalez, signed MR Jack Cressend, re-signed MR Scott Cassidy, signed 1B/C/DH Shawn Wooten, re-signed 3B Tim Hummel, signed INF Dave Berg, and re-signed OF George Lombard to MLCs and invited to ST.

New York Mets' MR Tyler Yates has a torn rotator cuff and will likely need season ending surgery.

Has anyone seen the Hot Stove Heaters at ESPN.com? Tim Kurkjan's column today claims Jason Jennings is the best hitting pitcher in baseball. Even without adjusting for Coors, Jennings' raw stats are not as good as Livan Hernandez's. Picking Brooks Kieschnick would be cheating. Wes Obermueller went 15 for 39, but that's just one season. Over a career, Jennings has the best raw stats, but Livan's gotta be number one.

The Cubs have signed Burnitz, and will hold a press conference at 5, the same time that Baltimore will hold their Sosa press conference.

Steve Stone's getting a radio show on WSCR The Score in Chicago.

From what I've heard, the Burnitz deal is 1 year, $5 Million. I'm not entirely sold, but Burnitz is a useful stopgap, and the Cubs can replace him after the season, if need be. And for those of you thinking "No Magglio?", I have serious misgivings about the health of his knee.

Agreed. Mags would've been the way to go, but I'm not sold on him being 100 percent or reliable for the entire season. At the very least, Burnitz will add a left-handed bat for a lineup that was sorely lacking last season.
