Does anyone else miss Survivor Series

When I was growing up, Survivor Series was always Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. I never actually saw any of them, but I'd occasionally watch them scrambled on the TV in my bedroom. Back then, you could hear it, but the picture would be all messed up. I also miss the Elimination-style matches. They're going to do two this year, but I remember when they used to do 4 or 5.

 

I guess I'm just being nostalgic for "how it used to be." Anyone else out there feel that way?

The first ppv I ever saw live on the air was a Survivor Series, forgot what year (The one with the Warriors taking on Andres team). That was on Thanksgiving night. I remember my family taking shots at me for watching "this crap",to be honest those times really have not changed.

I remember the announcers often throwing in reminders like "If you're going out of town for the holiday, call ahead and make sure you can order it where you're going."

 

I miss the Thanksgiving association, whether it be the night before or the night of, but I understand why they stopped doing it.

 

If you look at the pro wrestling industry from the 70s or 80s, territories - the WWF included - would often hold shows on holidays. Thanksgiving, New Years Day, sometimes even Christmas. While it makes for a memorable show, I'm sure the wrestlers would rather be home with their families than working the same match they've been working for six weeks straight.

It was always great when Survivor Series focused on the "sole survivor." The non-eliminated wrestlers from each 4 on 4 or 5 on 5 match competed in a Battle Royal at the end of the night to determine who it was.

Me too. Actually, I'm from Mass. and went to the show at the old Garden, but it was the first one I saw live. I don't know about you guys, but where I live, the schools have half days on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. I was in 3rd grade at the time and I was JAKKED to be going to a live PPV. I thought it was an OK show. I especially enjoyed the opener, but was confused when Perfect didn't show up. One more thing, sorry if I'm rambling... there was a dark match between Billy Gunn and the Brooklyn Brawler to open the show, and that confused the shit out of me. Billy Gunn came out in a white T-Shirt to no music. Weird.

At the 1990 Survivor Series. I like the idea, and was disappointed it never happened again. And it was actually a regular elimination match that they competed in.

Yeah, it wasn't a battle royal. It was just a way for Hogan and Warrior to go over twice. So it wasn't really a "sole survivor" thing.

The problem with trying to do the elimination matches these days is that no one really has a compelling storyline behind them besides the three or four main eventers. So you are going to have some long match in which the crowd doesn't care about any of the wrestlers. Even though the workrate was of a lower overall quality back then, you have to admit that the writing was catchy from the top of the card, to the bottom.

The first ppv i saw was ss90. this was the show that got me into wrestling and that was on thanksgiving night.

 

91 was on tg eve and we had a bunch of people over to watch it.

 

93 I missed cuz our box broke

*** SS 91 - Marking the FUCK out when everyone's favorite hero Hulk Hogan got shafted courtesy of my WCW hero Ric Flair, and he LOST the title.

 

Quote Roddy Piper after the match "It be a dark, dark day in da double-U, double-U Ef".

 

*** 92 - Horrible buildup. Rented the video.

 

*** 93 - Even worse show. Rented video.

 

*** 94 - Terrible main, heels go over??? Backlund wins title, this was surprising. Marked for Owen's fake turn shenanigans, but the match itself was very slow. Diesel eliminating everyone was fun. I ordered the show just to see 4 guys I marked for (Owen, Neidhart, Diesel, Shawn) all on one team.

 

*** 95 - VERY UNDERRATED and entertaining show, IMO. We saw some different aspects of the WWF. Low undercard got a big match. Heels and Faces put together in a "Wildcard" match. Japanese ladies embarassed Madusa's team. Great Bret/Diesel match. Taker squashes everyone.

 

*** 96 - IMO, one of the best Pay Per View events WWF ever produced.

 

*** 97 - On my birthday, so missed it...got a tape the next day...something about Bret Hart or something...

 

*** 98, watched this with friends. Marked out for The Rock taking it. Kinda knew he would tho. Whichever Stooge hit Austin with the chair during the good mankind/Austin match RUINED IT. Worst chair shot ever puts down Austin. RIGHT.

 

*** 99 - Watched it, terrible.

*** 01 - First SS for me at college. Was marking out for The Alliance although obviously it was a lost cause. Okay show.

 

*** 02 - Missed it, but caught DVD and thought "excellent show". Survivor Series 2002, after giving it 2 years, is TERRIBLE. Trish/Victoria is awful. Opening 6-man tables match is terrible. Show/Lesnar is fun. Elim. Chamber is long, prodding, and boring. Smackdown 6 3-way tag was decent, but WAY dissapointing. Kidman/Noble is underrated, IMO.

 

*** 03 - Watched it at bar, hot crowd there, it was amazing to watch first time. Got DVD. Shane/Kane sucks. Vince/Taker sucks. Opening Elim match is not that good, but not horrible. Team Bischoff Vs. Team Austin is AMAZING, one of 2003's top matches. There's like, maybe ONE (if that) rest hold the entire match. All action. Surprising ending. Shitty/slow main event.
