WCW facts, tidbits, and stuff people forgot

Recommended Posts

I couldn't find the original question, but someone asked why there was no War Games at Fall Brawl '99. This was a matter of logistics, as they didn't have room to put two rings in the arena, based on the way tickets had already been sold. It was a matter of poor pre-planning.

I don't understand that at all, seeing as how they had held WarGames there for THREE CONSECUTIVE YEARS before then. How/why would the 2 rings fit then, but not in 1999?

Cost cutting measure?

Wait...this is wcw. They would have brought 2 more rings since it cost money.

The original character name for the Wall, who debuted as the German bodyguard of Berlyn (Alex Wright's new character) was Mercedes Diesel, but they changed it at the last second.

What would have happened to WCW in early 2000 in terms of storyline, if Russo and Bischoff never came back? I think they were headed towards a Hogan/Sid storyline (shudders) and massive pushes for Vampiro and the Wall.

They didn't plan for Fall Brawl '99 to have War Games, and so had sold tickets based on a seating plan that was for one ring. When they thought about having War Games, they would have had to change the whole seating plan to accommodate the second ring, and it would have been too much trouble.

Ohhh lord.

Hogan/Wall would have headlined the next PPV, with Hogan doing the tired old comeback win over the big guy.

Vampiro wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the top, as he was getting the famous push where he NEVER wins over guys like Luger. I could have seen them turning Vampiro heel and doing the Sting feud by June or so, which would end, of course, with Sting squashing him.

As for the rest of it, God, I can barely remember that crap.

Nah, I was reading up on DDT Digest and there was a set up for a Hulk Hogan-Sid feud that went nowhere. On the second to last Thunder before Russo and Bischoff showed up, Sid chokeslammed Jimmy Hart and placed a contract on Jimmy's chest (Presumably for Hogan to sign for the main event match at Spring Stampede). Although the Hogan-Wall match on the Nitro before Russo-Bischoff came back, had a cheap finish (Vampiro ran in and caused a DQ for no reason, gotta love WCW's random booking).

One final question, what the heck was up with Lenny and Lodi for no apparent reason becoming 2XS and being named Lane and Rave? All of a sudden they were called 2XS, not overtly gay, and managed by Miss Hancock.

TBS's Standards And Practices. The gimmick was considered too controversial for a TBS network.

Actually, they were Standards and Practices when they came back. Lenny and Lodi had been doing the gay (oh, sorry, I mean they were "brothers") gimmick since the summer, but GLAAD had complained and Standards and Practices ordered WCW to get rid of the character. On the 10/4/99 Nitro, I believe Lenny was supposed to come out with no makeup and not acting flamboyant at all and job the cruiserweight title before being taken off TV. However, WCW was reluctant to put him on TV, so they gave the title to Psychosis, claiming that he had won the title two days earlier and then had Psychosis job the belt to Disco Inferno.

Lenny and Lodi came back at the end of the year as Standards and Practices, with Ms. Hancock (it was originally supposed to be Ms. Handcock, but Stacy Keibler refused), but after about a month, they dumped her as manager and became Lane and Idol, 2XS (which I believe was later changed to just XS). After a few weeks, Idol changed his name to Rave, which I think was ordered by Kevin Sullivan.

As for Sid-Hogan, the match was announced as the main event for Spring Stampede, but the returns of Bischoff and Russo changed that. As Sid was injured around the time of that PPV, it's likely that Hogan would have won the title.

What was the reasoning behind giving Luger the title the week before Road Wild 97? Just to give him a quick title reign and keep him happy?

This was asked way back on page 6 and Loss said he didn't know. Fortunately, I did find out about this one.

Luger had written into his contract a title run. Well, Hogan was being SUPER pissy about it, so they dropped the title on Luger the Nitro before the ppv and had Nash, dressed as Sting, come running in and bop Luger in the head to give Hogan the win. That way, Luger's contract was fulfilled, but he was screwed with his trunks still on.

Luger did NOT have a title run written into his contract. It was the first regular 3hr Nitro, and they wanted to end it with a bang, hence the title change.

Really? Well, my face is red.

Okay, here's one that I know about.

About two months ago, I was working security at an indy show in the area. Before the show, I sat around and talked with Bobby Eaton for a while, he'd tell stories about how WCW would bring in like sixty guys for a Nitro, then use maybe twenty at most. One time he was having some coffee and asked Meng "What are you doing here?"

"I don't know what the fuck I'm doing here" came the response. Most of the guys hated what a waste of time it was to show up when no one knew who would be on the show.

Whatever happened to WCW Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel? The last time I remember seeing him was on The Main Event preshow before The Great American Bash 1995.

What did he do in WCW besides being Commish? Did he have a say in booking, or just a figurehead position on TV?

What was the deal with the snake biting Jake Roberts -- or should I say Jake making the snake bite him? -- at Halloween Havoc '92?

It was Jake's idea. He figured that the snake bite would be so shocking, that people would forget that he'd just done a clean job.

I wasn't watching WCW at the time, but have heard the soundbyte of when Buffer says "Bret 'Hitman' Clark". When (as in, which PPV/TV show) did this happen and what was the reaction afterwards?

If I remember correctly the announcers and performers all ignored it and went about their business, but of course the entire audience was like, "WTF did he just call him Clarke?!!?!"

Can't remember which show it was at though

Ted DiBiase was twice set to enter the NWA/WCW, in 1987 and 1993, but both times it fell through. The first time, he had actually verbally agreed to come in, but when Vince pitched him the basic idea of The Million Dollar Man gimmick (Vince wouldn't tell him everything until DiBiase was signed), he went with Vince instead. The second time, he had also agreed to money terms, but when they wanted his first match to be a 30:00 draw with Dustin Rhodes at Halloween Havoc '93, DiBiase didn't think that was the best way to debut, and so the deal fell apart.

Ted was rumored to be jumping ship in the summer of '92, resulting in Money Inc jobbing the tag titles to the Disasters. At least that's what Herb Kunze said.

Can somebody tell me who's talking in the soundbites on the DDT Digest WCW sound bites page and what they're talking about. Like all the ones except the Goldberg promo on Sid, Stevie Ray admitting to wanting to have gay sex with Curt Hennig, and Michael Buffer screwing up Bret Hart's name.

Thanks.

i got a question: Weren't the Nasty Boys briefly part of the NWO? i swear i remember seeing them in at least one backstage skit where the whole NWO were sitting around and drinking, and there was Knobs and Sags sitting alone with them in NWO shirts. and then not too long after that, they were kicked out by i think Hall and Nash. anyone else remember this or am i full of shit?

netslob,

They got sick of WCW and decided they wanted to join.

They met with Hogan, who gave them his WCW/NWO World Title to "take to the hotel, where we'll talk business after the show".

They partied with the nWo, including Knobbs "talking with his ass" (like Ace Ventura) pretending to be Bischoff (who was still a face announcer).

Eventually, they revealed they were just using/fucking with them, as The Nastys were denied entrance into the building, and beaten down by The Outsiders before a Nitro (the show opened with Hall & Nash standing above them in the ring).

The Nasty Boys were never official members.
