Warner out, Eli in..

Recommended Posts

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Eli Manning has replaced Kurt Warner as the New York Giants' starting quarterback.

Coach Tom Coughlin made the move Monday after Warner and the offense struggled for the second consecutive week in a 17-14 loss to the Cardinals in Arizona. The Giants (5-4) have lost three of the last four games after a 4-1 start.

Manning, the top pick in this year's draft and the brother of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, will face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday at Giants Stadium.

"He is the future of the New York Giants, it just starts now," Coughlin said of Manning, who lost a close training camp competition with Warner for the starting job. "I really felt the last four games we haven't been playing well offensively. We just need to make a change."

Coughlin told both players on Monday.

"Kurt is a competitor, a fighter," Coughlin said. ``He is not happy, but he is a class guy."

Manning obviously was thrilled.

"He is excited about the opportunity to compete and lead," Coughlin said

He won't come anywhere close to the success Big Ben has had. He'll easily throw 3 INTs and get sacked several times his first game.

I don't think it's a good idea at all. The Giants have a terrible O-Line, and the Falcons who will be his first opponent are 3rd in the league in sacks. I don't know how he'll respond to being sacked frequently early in his first game. The positive about playing the Falcons is that they have one of the worst pass defenses in the league in terms of yardage allowed.

Manning is going to be hit just as much, but he'll actually throw the ball away instead of taking a sack.

Warner actually said its BETTER to take a sack then throw the ball away.

*sigh*

Chargers fans have to be stoked ... Manning will be lucky to win half of his games (and by lucky I mean VERY VERY lucky) and thus the Giants will get a good, high draft pick ... which will go directly to the Bolts because of the Rivers/Manning deal.

/can't wait for Eli to make the "I can't believe I just threw another interception" face, made famous by his big brother

Oh my god. Eli won't have near the success Warner did. Warner got sacked so much b/c the Giants O-Line sucks. It's not like Eli is going be able to do much more unless he can dump the ball off to a reciever in .5 seconds.

Mistake on the Giants' part. Warner hasn't been great the past couple weeks, but I don't think he's played poorly enough to lose the job. The team is 5-4 after sucking the meat missile last season. If Warner had maintained his generally solid play, they might have finished 9-7; now they'll be lucky to go 7-9.

They've already won more games than they did last season haven't they? And Tom's right. Warner was taking them to a 9-7 record.

If they see the success Big Ben has had and that they're going to duplicate it then they're mistaken. Big Ben's got a better team to work with than Eli will have.

So the team is 5-4 with a chance to still make something of the season....so let's turn it over to the rookie quarter back? Yeahhhhh. Hopefully they end the season 5-11 and lose a high draft pick to the Chargers. Eli can eat me.

It's pronounced like Smoo I believe. At least if his name is after those little creatures from Lil Abner.

Does Eli Manning have potential to be as great or better than his older brother is?

Smues like Zues with an Sm instead of a Z. I had a different user name years ago, but for some reason when the board switched over and we all had to re-register it wouldn't take my old name, so I picked Smues which was a nickname from work. (I made smoothies, someone dubbed me the smoothie god Smues. We're so witty)

I hope you're aware that Zeus is spelt Z-E-U-S.

No.

Peyton is in a pass happy system with speedy wide outs who can catch with an average to above average line.

Eli will be on a team that currently has no real wide outs, an offensive line led by a guy who graduated from my high school of Sussex Central in Delaware, and no signs of consistent improvement under a coach who doesn't make the greatest of draft choices.

Peyton is just going to be too far ahead and I've said it before and I'll say it again. One of the Manning boys is not going to be good in the NFL and Peyton has already proven he is good.

The typo above was because I can never sleep on Sunday nights. The spelling of the name was because that's how the guy who gave me the nickname printed it on a name tag.

The Steelers also have one of the most (if not the most) talented top three wideouts in the league.

Bad move here. The Giants were still in contention for a wildcard spot with Warner, and they are basically waving the white flag with this move.

IMO, can't compare the two now, Ben has MUCH more talent around him than Eli. The Steelers have a good line with 3 great receivers and Eli has 2 receivers who are on a downward slope (Toomer used to be a very good, not great, but very good receiver and he has done nothing this year, and Hilliard has dropped off immensely from past years) and the worst offensive line in the league

They were on the way down anyway. Tiki Barber is the only reason they've won 5 games this year, but they have come back down to earth. Warner isn't doing anything, and as far as we know Eli could be what they need.

They likely won't make the playoffs regardless of who the QB is.

I agree. They're showing huge cracks all over that teams are going to exploit badly towards the end of the season. The O-line, for example, the lack of a marquee reciever that can burn people, Barber's streakiness, defensive question marks..they're a wildcard round loser, best case scenario. Manning's obviously been given the keys to the franchise, so he should get involved quickly, I think, with a suspect Warner there on the sidelines to back him up should he really struggle.

I think he's going to get his ass handed to him though, physically speaking. One guy to throw at, a hot/cold RB, and no line is a bad recipe for a rookie QB. He'll fare as well as Peyton did his first season with the Colts. Good stats with a poor record, and signs of being something really special.

Fuck Eli -- I hope he shreds both ACLs. I wonder what he thinks about playing in San Diego now? But hey, he showed CLASS in holding up that Charger jersey, or at least that's what Chris Berman said.

N.Y. O-line, do what you do so well...

With the situation Eli's walking into I see him being a repeat of Patrick Ramsay last season, getting repeatedly killed thanks to getting shit-all protection, though showing signs of being something good whenever he's not laid out on his back with a swarm of defenders standing over him.
