edotherocket Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 ONDON, Nov 18 (Reuters) - British ministers have condemned the 'disgraceful' racial abuse of England's black players during Wednesday's friendly international against Spain in Madrid and demanded that soccer authorities take action. Monkey noises were heard when Ashley Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips touched the ball during England's 1-0 defeat and chants of 'If you are not f**king black, jump up and down' rang out from the 55,000 crowd at Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium. The English FA had already complained that racist chanting marred Tuesday's under-21 friendly between the two countries and has contacted FIFA after Wednesday's scenes. Rest of the story can be found at: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/headlinenews?id=316723&cc=3436 Seriously...what the fuck is that all about? Are there really that many racist Spanish football supporters out there that are that stupid?
Lightning Flik Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Gotta say that definitely isn't something I would ever expect. Geezus, that's totally classless by Spain.
Guest Vitamin X Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 It is, actually. That requires quite an amount of coordination to get a chant that long going too.
Slayer Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 Fuck that's funny... Seconded I'd like to see FIFA (hell, any major sports body) try to shut up 50K+ people at once The only punishment I could see is if they take away home games from that team, but 1) I think it would create even more problems and 2) given how Euro-football fans are, I don't think that'd be a very smart move anyway
razazteca Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 I kind of expected this from British or the Germans but the Spanish?
Red Baron Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 No one complains about rioting and murders, but racism? Wow....
Kahran Ramsus Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 The Spanish are probably the most racist group of people (on average) in Europe after French & Germans, so I'm not that surprised.
Red Baron Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 The Spanish are probably the most racist group of people (on average) in Europe after French & Germans, so I'm not that surprised. nah, Scottish people are pretty damn racist.

The real question: what people in Europe aren't racist?

The real question: what people in Europe aren't racist? The closest would be the Polish ... who are only racist because they find Polish jokes so funny
King Cucaracha Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 It doesn't help that the Spanish manager called one of the top players in the world a 'black shit' a few weeks before these matches.
Red Baron Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 I'd say any eastern european and scandinavian country aren't as racist as western europe.
King Cucaracha Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 I'd say any eastern european and scandinavian country aren't as racist as western europe. I dunno. Most of the problems in recent years with English clubs in the UEFA Cup came against teams from Eastern Europe.
Zorin Industries Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Northern Ireland is becoming extremely racist, its been in quite a few papers that Belfast is now the most racist city in Europe. Figures, if we couldn't stop beating each other up over religon then there was no chance that people of other races were going to escape unscathed.
iggymcfly Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 I can't see that ever happening at a game in the States. I'm kind of surprised that people are still that backward and prejudiced in Spain.
Highland Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Nah, the Spaniards just say aloud what some people over here are thinking. Sad but true.
spiny norman Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 I recall several years back, when Australia was playing a home game against Israel, a group unfurled a massive banner saying "Hitler was right". So it's not just the Europeans.
Guest webmasterofwrestlegame Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Sepp Blatter, head of FIFA, has today suggested that FIFA would have supported England if they walked off after hearing racial abuse. Blatter went on to suggest that this is what should be done in the future. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/4029757.stm
Lil' Bitch Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 The real question: what people in Europe aren't racist? The Dutch?
Guest MikeSC Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Racism in Europe? Color me not shocked. Racist as hell folks over there. -=Mike
Kahran Ramsus Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 The real question: what people in Europe aren't racist? The Dutch? Have you been paying attention to the news lately? Some people over there are talking of deporting all Muslims from the country.

Some people over there are talking of deporting all Muslims from the country. That's not racist -- that's smart. And I've heard that some of those European countries have some strict-ass rules regarding immigration. And wasn't there an incident a while ago in the NHL where this black guy was fighting someone and that person called him the "n" word? There seemed to be more of an outrage over the word than the actual fight itself...
Red Baron Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Yep. John Vanbeesbruk (I cant spell his name) said it to one of his players.
Guest MikeSC Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 The real question: what people in Europe aren't racist? The Dutch? Have you been paying attention to the news lately? Some people over there are talking of deporting all Muslims from the country. He's advocating removing all radical Muslims who refuse to live by Dutch law. More power to him. He should deport them --- then shoot them while they're leaving. -=Mike

The Decemberists Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 Well at least us in Europe didn't wait till the 1860s to realise that maybe, just maybe, having black people as slaves was not the best thing to do...

Too bad dropping "N" bombs is not a rarity. Nor is sending Jews off to get slaughtered en masse. -=Mike
The Decemberists Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 The N word is a rarity over here - former soccer manager Ron Atkinson was sacked from his TV job for saying it when he thought his microphone was dead and it got huge press because it just isn't a word used. The only time I ever hear it is when I'm unlucky enough to hear some US rap music. And, yeah, I forgot everyone not born in the US is actually just like Hitler, my mistake. But there's similar attitude is the US, if not to Jews. Millions of peope didn't vote for Kennedy as he was a Catholic.
