Ricky Steamboat Backstage At RAW

Recommended Posts

In a move that will probably surprise a few people when they read this, former NWA World champion Ricky Steamboat is backstage at tonight's Raw taping in Buffalo, New York. The word going around the back is that Steamboat is being considered for (or may have already signed for) an agent's position with the company. I don't think I need to tell anyone reading this that Steamboat is more than qualified for that position, as he's one of the all time greatest babyfaces.

In recent months, Steamboat has been working as a regular performer for Ring of Honor, also teaching and advising many of the ROH wrestlers on ways to improve on their work inside the ring and connecting with the audience. Steamboat is currently involved in a ROH feud against Mick Foley, leading representatives of "Pure Wrestling" against Foley's "Hardcore" wrestlers. Steamboat is booked for ROH's 12/26 event in Philadelphia, PA.

Steamboat retired from the ring in August 1994 after suffering back injuries during a WCW United States championship win against Steve Austin during Clash of the Champions 28.

Steamboat had been outspoken about WWE during several appearances at wrestling conventions in recent years and had turned down interest in signing up with the company several months back as part of their overtures towards older stars during the startup process of the WWE 24/7 Video on Demand project.

I always had a feeling WWE was having Foley test the Hardcore/Purist angle in ROH for them to use it in WWE.

Steamboat would make a good addition to the roster and should take over Smackdown because he has a good speaking voice (which he lacked during his career)

This is awesome news. Maybe he can send some logic into some certain people in this company.

And I'd LOOOOVE to see him as a General Manager or something. He'd be 90485340958 more useful then what they have going now.

They should steal the Hardcore/Purist storyline verbatim from ROH.

But who plays Maff/Whitmer/Carnage Crew for the Hardcore Side? (RVD, Dudleyz and Rhyno?) and who plays the Punk/Nigel/Collyer side? (Benjamin, Benoit and Haas?)

Over/Under on the number of shows before Steamboat is squashed in a backstage vignette by Batista or Snitsky? What was it, like 3 weeks for Fit Finley?

What did they do to Finley?

As much as I like Steamboat, he's fucking boring in an on-air role.

Boring?

Watch his current stuff in Ring Of Honor with Mick Foley in the "Hardcore vs. Pure Wrestling" angle. It's gold.

I completely agree his work with Foley and ROH in general has been simply superb. However; if he were to be the GM; I wonder how well he'd be recieved by the fans or if they were even give a shit anyways. Far as most fans are concerned, he'd be some other old timer with gray hair.

Alot of reports said that Steamboat could work one more last match; So who knows? Maybe he and Flair could bust it down one last time whenever the next ppv in the Carolina's are.

Undertaker beat him up in a vignette in a parking lot, like literally a week after Finley was hired

Can someone explain to me exactly what a fucking road agent does? Isn't Fit Finlay a road agent? Didn't Terry Taylor used to be? It can't be too damn prestigious.

Vince is not a big Ric Steamboat fan, so I doubt he will be used on air at all

Once upon a time, Vince was not a huge Eric Bischoff fan.

HHH is a big Flair fan, and one of Flair's most famous feuds was against Steamboat. He'll probably get him out there to do something.

If they'll send fat-assed Slaughter out there, they'll get Steamboat on camera somehow.

2002:

OH MY GOD, ERIC BISCHOFF IS ON RAW, QUICK MATE, TURN IT ON!!!!

2004:

Yeah, I had a good day, Hey, Steamboat's on Raw, what do you know.

...So what are you up to?

I wouldn't really see them doing anything beyond a segment where Eugene marks out over Steamboat. They may possibly put Steamboat in someone's corner to counter Ric Flair. I don't see him as the GM type but I also haven't seen his ROH stuff either.

Maybe this will mean that there will actually be better wrestling on WWE TV...........but probably not.

Steamboat would make a good replacement for Jerry Lawler.

While I agree that pocket lint would make a good replacement for Jerry Lawler, has Steamboat improved that much? He could always say the right thing but he never struck me as a funny guy or mr. excitement.

Ricky Steamboat is the previous generations Lance Storm. Very Good workers, but nowhere near the top on the charismatic list...although thats mainly how WWE treated Storm. I didn't see much of him in ECW.

Fans like Flair and Hogan. A lot. Why do people still think this about old timers?

They book the layout of the matches, tell the wrestlers where to go and what to do. They act as a liason between the wrestlers and the writers, and between the writers and management.

Charisma is not mic skill. Charisma is the ability to play a role through facial expressions and mannerisms and also involve the crowd in one's matches. Steamboat had that in abundance.

You can't blame Steamboat for that. When he was in his prime only a few wrestlers in his day actually did decent enough Mic work, and others did Mic work that wasn't that great but was such a staple of their character that they were acceptable. Steamboat had loads of charisma with or without trying to yak on the mic.

Either way of judging charisma, Steamboat in the vocal portion of charisma doing 2 hours of PBP would put me to sleep.
