Matt Young Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 A few weeks ago, I turned on the TV and saw a video for a Jay-Z and Linkin Park collaboration. It was a live version of "Encore/Numb". I thought it was really good. I saw later on that MTV had a half hour special, MTV Mash-Ups, showing several such collaborative performances where the Jay-Z and LP blended their songs together into a unique and quite entertaining hybrid. I found out that the album, Collision Course, is set for release on Tuesday, November 30th. I was really interested in getting this CD/DVD package. I really thought it had potential to be one of 2004's top albums based on what I've heard. I'm very disappointed, however, that there are so few tracks. I will still give them a listen on MTV.com's "The Leak" and I may get the album, but I'm having doubts now. Has anyone else heard any of this, and if so, what's your opinion? By the way, before I go, here's the track listing: Disc 1 01. Dirt Off Your Shoulder/Lying from You 02. Big Pimpin'/Papercut 03. Jigga What/Faint 04. Numb/Encore 05. Izzo/In the End 06. Points of Authority/99 Problems/One Step Closer Disc 2 07. Intro [DVD] 08. In the Studio [DVD] 09. Jay-Z Arrives [DVD] 10. Rehearsal [DVD] 11. Sound Check [DVD] 12. Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Don't tell me you expected this to be good?
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 It's not really that good.
Lil' Bitch Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Rock & rap don't go well together in most cases, however I have to admit Numb/Encore was a nice mix when I watched the live performance IMO.
Guest Shutterspeed Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 I don't know. Maybe two wrongs do make a right. But probably not.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Crap. I had a date the other night. And the date was with a girl that likes Jay-Z. I didn't know this. So before we went out we had the TV on, and a concert with Jay-Z/Linkin Park performing together was on. I verbally ripped the piece of shit concert a new asshole, and then went off on how Jay-Z has done jack and shit since 2001. She didn't like that.
1234-5678 Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Do what I do.....try to force your musical tastes on them, and if they don't listen, fuck em and chuck em. On a side note, nothing Linkin Park has ever done has been any good. I'm not the biggest Jay Z fan, although I enjoyed some of his earlier stuff, and his use of "Five To One" was cool, but am I the only one who sees this as a step down for him? It would be like 2Pac working with Nickelback, or Nas working with Puddle Of Mudd.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 The Black Album was one of last year's best records AND Jay-Z's finest album since his debut in '96.
Matt Young Posted November 28, 2004 Author Report Posted November 28, 2004 The Black Album was one of last year's best records AND Jay-Z's finest album since his debut in '96. Agreed. The lyrics and beats far exceed his last few efforts. JAxl (or anyone), do you know what song he used the bassline from "Five to One" on? I recall hearing that and a little bit of "Light My Fire" during Jay's MTV Unplugged performance.
1234-5678 Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 He used "Five To One" on the song "The Takeover" Mos Def also recently used it on "The Rapeover"
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 All I know is "99 Problems But a Bitch Ain't One" is an embarassing piece of shit.
Hank Kingsley Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Now, I haven't listened to the Grey Album yet, but I don't see how you can top this.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Click "PLAY" next to 99 problems and listen...I dare you...best mix ever.
Hank Kingsley Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 The entire CD is glorious. "Purple Rain"/"My 1st Song" is sheer brilliance.
Guest Shutterspeed Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 On a side note, nothing Linkin Park has ever done has been any good. Thanks. And Deon, please don't refer to Linkin Park as a "rock" band. It's an insult to legitimate contributors to the genre.
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 All I know is "99 Problems But a Bitch Ain't One" is an embarassing piece of shit. Not really, but nice try. You really do have awful taste in everything.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 No, I don't. It's a lame Pop-Rap song.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 No, I don't. It's a lame Pop-Rap song. Pop and rap don't have to be exclusive if they're done well. "Change Clothes" is slightly silly pop-rap; "99 Problems" is a lot better and I'm not sure where you make the connection. As a damning term, "pop-rap" doesn't really work for most of The Black Album.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 No, I don't. It's a lame Pop-Rap song. Congratulations on knowing nothing. Will Smith is pop rap; the overcompressed drums and distorted guitars of "99 Problems" are far removed from anything of the sort.
Guest subliminal_animal Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Putting music into genres all becomes opinion after a certain point.
Myxamatosis Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Putting music into genres all becomes opinion after a certain point. And considering most musical genres aren't scientifically factual, it's a bit funny to see so many cling to them.
1234-5678 Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 The few times I heard it, I enjoyed "99 Problems", as opposed to, say "Big Pimpin".
lomasmoney Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 The Black Album was one of last year's best records AND Jay-Z's finest album since his debut in '96. Agreed. The lyrics and beats far exceed his last few efforts. JAxl (or anyone), do you know what song he used the bassline from "Five to One" on? I recall hearing that and a little bit of "Light My Fire" during Jay's MTV Unplugged performance. Blueprint was better. The song was Takeover that he sampled Five to One for and calling 99 problems pop-rap is one of the most absurd comments I have ever seen on this board another example of why the rap bashers need to stay out of any discussions about rap
Henry Spencer Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 That 99 Problems/Let's Go Crazy mix is pretty neato.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Even if it was pop rap, so the fuck what? Is Jay-Z supposed to cater to people who don't even listen to rap and make whatever kind of music that it is you want him to make so you can still not buy his album? I'd call the Black Album the best rap album to come out last year if only because of the fact that it was the only thing that still stands out to me a year later.
ant_7000 Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Jay-z is the only rapper that I know that can walk the fine line between street rap and pop rap. Black Album was good and maybe rap album of the year last year, I wouldn't say its a classic thou.
Guest whatitistoburn Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 That purple album "99 Problems" is HORRIBLE. Seriously, Grey Album for life.
The Man in Blak Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Heard "Numb / Encore" for the first time on the way to work this morning. Jay's rhymes still shine through the monotonous techno-drek but, once the song hits the climax (a.k.a Linkin Park's entry), all hope is officially lost. Just listen to the Grey Album.
