Whatever tickles your pickle, Inc.

While watching "I Love the 80s" tonight waitng for RAW, they were talking about Duran Duran. Has anyone heard their new album at all? I was a fan as a kid and am interseted in knowing if the new album is worth a pickup.

years ago, i put together a random 90s mix cd, and have long since forgotten what was on it. i'm listening to it now for the first time in a while. so far i've heard:

pavement - "cut your hair"

shudder to think - "hit liquor"

presidents of the united states of america - "mach 5"

i'm pleasantly surprised.

Off to another Morrissey gig tonight  :headbang:

See you at Earl's court on sat?

Yep. I'll be dressed as a priest but with a black Mozfather t-shirt for the occassion.

Just back from Brum. Really enjoyable gig despite two things -

a) we were in seats... it's not right unless Morrissey knows you're there, and that means standing at the front.

b) 'we' refers to me and my ex-girlfriend who bought the tickets ages ago when still together and then I was too much of a bastard to let her have my ticket. So that was kind of awkward, but didn't really spoil it.

Great to hear Bigmouth Stikes Again live. The band play it brilliantly.

i recently watched clips of a folk concert film called "isn't this a time", and mary travers (of peter, paul and mary fame) now looks almost EXACTLY like the jabba-the-hut incarnation of sally struthers from 'south park'.

funny story behind that "mary now" picture i found (from mirandala.org):

"Just the other day (as noted on the Sideblog), CNN reported that Mary is undergoing chemotherapy for leukemia. (Peter, Paul, and Mary’s website states that a full remission is expected within a matter of months and that Mary looks forward to touring again when she’s feeling better. Cross your fingers for a quick recovery!) So what picture does CNN choose to run with this story? What appealing photo of the singer in her glory days does CNN pick to accompany this human interest story? That’s right. The WORST PICTURE EVER TAKEN OF MARY TRAVERS - OR PERHAPS OF ANY HUMAN BEING.

"Why, CNN? What’s the matter? Did you have a bad experience at summer camp? Were you scarred by enforced PPM sing-a-longs on family roadtrips with your Boomer parents? Are you driven to inexplicable levels of rage by three-hour pledge-drive PPM specials? Is this really misplaced anger at Joan Baez or Judy Collins? Why kick a folkie when she’s down?"

So I just found out that my musical saviour Devin Townsend is releasing an ambient album (well, it's already out, I just haven't ordered it yet). I'm very intruiged to see how Devin handles ambient music, as he mastered atmospheric sound on his brilliant Terria.

And gtd, how'd the rest of that 90s mix cd work out for you?

That said, I think the best thing about Lean Back was the bootleg floating around with some Biggie verses on it and just the hook and beat from the original song.

HungryJack's comment from the Singles thread leads me to ask this question. I haven't followed any of the wealth of posthumous 2Pac or Biggie material that's been released. Do the same verses get reused, or is there really that big a vault of mediocre raps somewhere?

2Pac has a vast vault of unused material, so much so that it leads some people to believe he's still alive, although things still get reused occasionally as well.

Biggie hasn't really had much of a posthumous career when compared to Pac. The Lean Back reworking in question was using verses from "Party and Bullshit" off of the Who's the Man? soundtrack.

This new Bonnie "Prince" Billy album, Superwolf, is okay (better than Master and Everyone, definitely), but it feels like the work of a man who's content on making an album that's simply passable. I dunno, that's just based on one listen, but we'll see, I guess.

So, did you think Master and Everyone was bad, or... ?

i'm listening to this 'no alternative' compilation benefit cd that i haven't put on in years, and there's a goo goo dolls cover of "bitch" on it. it's exactly as bad as it sounds.

Hey...on "Threat" off Jay-Z's The Black Album, who's the guy that does the "nigga I'mma throw a molotov cocktail through ya mama's mama's house...I been making threats since I was in kindergarten nigga...etc etc" interludes? His voice sounds really familiar...I just can't quite place it. I suppose, for all my downloading of various remixes, I might as well bite the bullet and buy the damn thing (as I did for the Grey and Purple albums) so I can pick it out of the liner notes, but I wanna know now!

And that got me to thinking...are there any such interludes on The Black Album that aren't totally ludicrous? Jay-Z's mom, this guy, the clip from Gladiator...

I mentioned some time ago that I thought 311's blue album wasn't too bad, which was true although I hadn't listened to it in many years. I'm listening to it now and it's actually better than I thought it was. Utterly unoriginal, but quite well done and polished. Good music for when you want background noise.

The actual disc is like Mars or something. Looks pretty cool, I forgot that.

So I'm curious what you all think of Beck. I noticed how strange it was that I can't seem to recall his name being brought up in this folder at all. I can see some finding him threatening as he's essentially a rich and famous version of what some board regulars attain to be.

I think he's pretty cool. "Loser" is probably top 5 as far my favorite music videos go. Midnite Vultures was his best album. Well, not really, but I like it the best. "Hollywood Freaks" made that album. He was the Golden Boy for a while... that's never good. But it seems to have passed.

Obv. talented man, but....sometimes he's too wrapped up in his own preciousness. I find his lyrical nonsense more silly and irksome than clever; I suppose you could argue that the words are not the point, and I would be hard-pressed to disagree, but I still don't like his smug attitude.

Midnite Vultures is my favorite Beck album, too, in so far as my opinion on Beck's recorded output matters, which, honestly, doesn't.
