I need a good RPG.

Recommended Posts

Don't listen to Star Ocean, he has an irrational hatred for the Suikoden series, much like Andrew and Xenogears.

I've rationally explained why I think Xenogears lix teh dix. I don't think you want to hear it all again.

Likewise, SO3 has explained why he doesn't like the Suikodens.

Xenogears is still heavenly compared to Xenosaga and FFTA, though.

You've explained why you don't like them. You haven't explained why you both feel the need to talk about it whenever the game is mentioned even in passing.

Its like saying the words Michael Moore with MikeSC around.

It's been forever since I played a good RPG.

I remember the days of my Junior High and High School where I was rapidly plugging in the Final Fantasies, Xenogears(away Andrew!), Legend of Legaia, Wild Arms, and well any RPG I could get my hands on.

Just reading this and got a chuckle reading it. We have different concepts of time. I think of Xenosaga (Xenogears too) as just yeterday. Not forever ago! Man, time goes by quick when my yesterday is deemed as good old notsgolia. How long ago would Pac-Man be considered as?

I didn't say anything about Xenogears specifically in this thread until you did, I was talking about RPGs in general.

A lot of it has to do with them usually being brought up in passing as OMG GR8ST RGPSEVA when we believe that is grossly inaccurate. At least that's how I presume SO3 feels.

Baten Kaitos, what is the popular opinion on this game?

How long ago would Pac-Man be considered as?

That would be back in the day when arcade games actually cost a quarter.....remember those.

Stay far away from Suikoden 3.

Since you played the other Wild ARMs, try WA3, which may be the best in the series yet.

Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter is excellent, and quite different from normal RPGs.

Valkyrie Profile is one of the best turn based RPGs you can get.

If you don't mind something really long, get Dragon Warrior VII. It looks primitive, but the gameplay pays off.

The Shadow Hearts games are good choices as well.

Out of Disgaea, Phantom Brave, and La Pucelle, Disgaea is the best one, though if you want to play all of them Pucelle would probably be the best start, since it was made first.

The best choice is to get Star Ocean 3, and pretend it's turn based.

Hey SO3, sell me on SO3. :) I need another RPG to play too. What's so great about it?

You like DW7 so you automatically must have better tastes than most people.

Hm... Andrew, instead of knocking my selection of games for Damararu to try, why didn't you just make your own in your first post?

I didn't knock your list. You mentioned plenty RPGs that were quite different--ToS, SH:C, Disgaea, and so forth--I just hadn't noticed you posted yet because you're currently avatar-less.

Andrew with the way you wrote up your post and then tacked my name on as in I could help in the very matter, it seemed like you were suggesting that all I would do is provide him with what exactly you were mocking him for. Hence why I was angry.

And yes, I'm avatar-less my stupid host site dropped. Had to find a new one.

I googled all over the 'net, but I couldn't find any RPGs with Jason White in them...so fresh out of luck there.

You want something really crazy, go take Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne for a drive. It's a continuation of the Persona series, with turn-based modern-day occult silliness that you might latch onto.

I think it's a new game.  Not totally sure though but I'd still like to see a Gamecube version.

I also wish Nintendo would get that Earthbound game out that's supposed to have been coming out since the N64 days.

It was supposed to come out for the 64DD, and I had heard some rumors of them doing it for Gamecube, but it's been in developmental hell for so long...

Pretty much the last I'd heard of it:

http://www.gamersmark.com/news/2003/03/1/2298/

I don't recall it showing up at 2K3's E3, and if it had it would have showed up by now. If it comes out and it still is worthwhile I'll be shocked. However, Kirby's Air Ride actually came out (it was originally an N64 game), so maybe there's still a chance.

I think I've mentioned it here, but Mother 3 was rumored to be on the GBA, as was a Mother 1+2 compilation.

My interest was revived by the topic, so I looked around a bit. One of the guys behind the Mother series, Shigesato Itoi, was quoted saying Mother 3 would be out in 2005, and Miyamoto said in Famitsu Magazine that it was still under development and would be released "soon." In addition, Mother 1+2 is currently out in Japan.

Although stuff is popping up which says Mother 3 is a DS release instead, but this is largely unofficial hearsay.

Mother 1+2 has been out in Japan since las year. Mother 3 is supposed to be well into development by now, but no one has seen hide nor hare of it since its original announcement, so who know. Besides, the likelyhood either of these games will make it to this country are nill anyways.

There were actually screenshots of the game released in Nintendo Power. Nothing too big, just Ness and the moon man guy.

Would the Baldur's Gate series count as a RPG? I am not an expert on this brand of game, but I love the BG series...

Yes. Baldur's Gate is apart of the RPG genre. Same goes for Neverwinter Nights and Ice Wind Dale.

These games mentioned here are pretty good RPGs for the PC. Just don't expect to go very fast or do everything in your first time through.

Well I do have ideas to make Sports Games more SIM like......and well a little more roleplaying like as in you take on the role of the General Manager or Owner and do EVERYTHING they have to do.....like fire drunken players and then tell advertisers off.

And they've got those - the Mogul series (I know there's a baseball one, but I think there's a football one too) puts you in the owner's chair and makes you preside over a whole bunch of junk, like salaries and even hot dog prices and such.

Planescape Torment was probably the best of the PC D&D franchise from the late 90s.

I guess I could give Suikoden 3 a shot.

I really like Feudal Japan or Medieval RPG's. Or hell even ancient with techno mixed in. Yes I like the cliche' stories to before Andrew starts in.

Then why does BG get no love here?

Go for the eyes, Boo, go for the eyes -- arrrrrrrrgh!...

Because a majority of the people who frequent this folder are nerds for Japanese console games.

Hey I play D&D in real life so you know I love all those video games.

Then go get Baldur's Gate, hippie. The Second one (Shadows of Amn) and its expansion pack are better than the first game, but if you play the first one you'll appreciate SOA more.

Not only is it a fun game, it's hella cheap now...

Bear in mind, the PS2 Fallout and Baldur's gate games are dungeon crawls. The Baldur's gate one is pretty fun, but they're not what you're looking for. PC RPGs that rule:

I liked Planescape and Icewind Dale more than BG, though it's good and I haven't played BG2 (I assume it's out)

Anachronox is good, good stuff, though it's light on combat, heavy on sidequests, and the story will never be finished. Has a great sense of humor. For example, the collectible in the game is called a TACO: totally arbitrary collectible object.

And of course Fallouts I & 2

Also, I really dug the Dark Sun games (old School D&D)

...

Baldur's Gate and Fallout are dungeon crawls, but Torment and Icewind Dale are real RPGs?

And Anachronox is mildly amusing if you like console-style RPGs, but it really doesn't have much to offer other than its humor.

He did say the PS2 versions.

The PS2 "Fallout" game is a pathetic attempt to cash in on a popular name..that didn't work.

Lord knows I certainly don't agree with everything Andrew has said in this thread, but I'm with him on Xenogears.

I knew a kid in college who was so annoyingly infatuated with that game that I once got into an argument with him over which was a better work of fiction: Xenogears the game, for the entire works of Shakespeare.

He chose the game, and he was NOT joking in the least.

I don't know what sort of crazy fucking subliminal shit the creators snuck into that game, but it's got some weird-ass fans.

Xenogears is an alright game. It was building up quite nicely in the first disc, but fell quite flat as you got closer to the end. Although, I do believe that I fought with Andrew on the subject of Xenogears, but I'm not about to blame anyone for not liking it.

I do not know how anyone can claim that any RPG is a better work than Shakespeare. The man was a gifted writer that no RPG's story can actually stack up to. Considering I've played pretty much all RPGs, I can say that with absoluteness.

I think the kid you were dealing with doesn't understand how exactly Shakespeare worked. I mean, I didn't really care for Shakespeare either, when I was in Grade 10 (that's like 5 years ago). It wasn't till I actually took part in our classes daily play, and had MacBeth's role that I began to understand the significance of Shakespeare's work. So he's probably like I was, ignorant. Honestly, how you could compare Xenogear's story to MacBeth is insane.

I will admit the Xeno-Cultists (as I call them) are a little nuts.
