Rumsfeld and Soldiers have a discussion

Recommended Posts

The picture from the New York Times? No way.

I'm not saying he should read the NY Times. I'm saying that the very first sentence on the front page story about the situation in the NY Times says that Rumsfeld was talking to soldiers who hadn't gone into Iraq yet, and kkk with Fox News (even if he wasn't watching 6 hours a day like he normally does) left him in the dark about it.

So, while that's not a ringing endorsement of the NY Times, it's a suggestion that maybe he should ween himself of NY Times For The Right.

All this talk of the media reminds me of what that guy who wrote the book on the Jason Blair scandals said on the Daily Show: People don't watch the news to be informed anymore, they watch to get their point of view reinforced.

And in a related story, people can't watch the Daily Show to be entertained anymore, you watch yo get your point of view reinforced, provided it's the right (left) one.

That of course would be someone who doesn't watch the Daily Show often, as Jon Stewart regularly pokes fun at Democrats (calling their primary "The Race From The White House").

Doesn't it seem kind of odd that the Daily Show would get so popular? I mean if the quote-unquote Main Stream Media is so biased against Republicans, why would people flock to a comedy fake news show? Maybe its because the media has no balls in this country anymore, something Stewart lives to point out. If the people asking the questions would have actually done their jobs, we might not be in the mess we are in now.

jon stewart ripped this to shreds on The Daily Show

it would  convince anyone who saw it that Rumsfeld is a total dolt

Jon Stewart stopped being relevent when he became the Media Golden Boy.

People just lose something when the media discovers them. They lost aren't the same as before.

I disagree.

"Richard Pryor generic white guy voice": That Jon Stewart is a swell guy.

Did you see his CNN interview with Larry King? I don't think the "Media Golden Boy" would act like that. Or even if he would, he is still funny, so what is your point?

Edit: i kinda understand what you mean now. i don't think Jon Stewart ever wanted to be that person or tried to be, it just happened.

Why did the media have to fuck up a good thing?

What irks me about Stewart is that he refuses to take on the responsibilities of the journalist that sheer popularity has made him.

But he's not a journalist. He's a comedian.

A comedian who's popular mainly because the alledged liberal media is so spineless and lame that what comes out of Julia Roberts's hoo-ha is bigger news than Americans dying in a war.

So what you're saying is that he should become what he mocks because he's gotten popular by pointing out how lame the media is?

*head explodes*

Honestly, I don't see any change in Jon Stewart or the show itself since its popularity boost, yet everyone's all OMG TEH DAILY SHOW IZ RUINED NOW~!

Stewart's smug asshole persona gets really annoying sometimes.

It totally ruined this interview he had with this guy who was pretty interesting last week.

Show is still pretty funny though even though it's biased as hell

The fact is, a LOT of young people watch him to get news. The title "Journalist" isn't just horded by the assholes who sit in the news chairs of CNN or CBS, but to anyone who people rely on for information and news.

John Stewart has, by default, become a journalist. Don't get "media" and "journalist' mixed up. They are two different things.

Does anyone stop to wonder why The Daily Show, with its undeniable liberal slant, is taking viewership from the "liberal" media?

What specifically do you think Stewart needs to do to act more like a journalist?

Because people prefer style over substance, not because of it's liberal slant. That's just a side-effect that has happened because Stewart has becoming more and more political as he's gotten more and more noteriety. Seriously, it's not because the Daily Show is some sort of bastion of left wing liberalism left on T.V, it's because young people nowadays are more into getting soundbites and smart-ass remarks than actual news.

There's several stories that I was aware of because of the internet that I only saw Jon Stewart mention and not the Evil Biased Liberal Media, so I wouldn't completely agree with the style over substance argument.

For one thing? Don't pretend he's "above" the fighting like he did on Crossfire. His argument was that he didn't have to be held to any sort of standard since he is on Comedy Central and comes after a show with puppets making prank phone calls. He needs to take his work a little more seriously. That's not to say he shouldn't be funny, far from it, but use a little more depth and analysis. Believe me, you can make news analysis entertaining especially when you have as much talent as Stewart.

And would you stop babbling on about the "liberal" media. The media is too sprawling, diverse, and consumed by corporate interests to have any sort of ideology.

Which stories in particular? I'd like to know exactly what stories he brings up. And much of the time it is style over substance; he tends to fill in way too much with an overgeneralized smart-assed remark about everything. Especially after his suck up interview with John Kerry, I really don't find him to be that much of a substance guy.

One that jumps to mind is the story about stations running news segments that were pimping the Medicare drug benefit that turned out to be produced by the government.

I didn't even hear about that one till after The Daily Show mentioned it.

Not to mention that after The Daily Show kept running clips of government officals saying opposite things, suddenly you had things like NBC's "Truth Squad" and the like.

Huh. Weird, 'cause I caught that from my local. Though locals all vary, so whatever.

On the second one, though, that's more crap than anything. As a rule, the show loves to take quotes out of context and other such stuff. I wouldn't exactly say that's 'exclusive news' as much as them flinging bullshit around.

I think the Crossfire thing comes from them expecting him to be their little comedy monkey. If that douche Tucker would have talked to me like he did to Jon, I'd have bitchslapped his fruit-booty bow tie to the back of his neck.

He went on that show to be serious and they wanted him to be Mr. Funny Guy.

Also Jon really hates Robert Novak for the whole outing-the-CIA-operative thing.

So there was a lot of reasons he was in a pissy mood on Crossfire.

But... that's not true. He came off looking like just as big an asshole as they. For all the "He wanted to bring the substance, he's the one that didn't want to get to an actual subject and kept harping on Begala and Carlson. I agree with his views, but damn he came off as a huge hypocrit when he was on because all he did was do exactly what they do: Bitch and shout down the other guys.

Stewart is a comedian first, a news anchor second. Tucker Carlson is a news anchor all the way while also being a partisan party whore the next. He prides himself on his coverage and ability to report the news that is considered important by other big media outlets. Jon Stewart is determined to make people laugh but then give them some outlandish take on the current events going on. Big media is sleeze and I know a number of people were turned off after the Clinto hummer scandal and the Dan Rather crusade to brand Bush an army deserter. But they have kept up with the daily show and have never felt it had a liberal or conservative bias to it. They just felt it made fun of stupid politicians or the lame stories that accompany them. The Republicans are in power now so many of the Daily Show's stories are going to cover them by making fun of them or raking them over the coals sarcastically. I can recall the Daily Show making fun of the Liberals in power during Clinton's waning years as President, which is why I have felt that the Daily Show or Jon Stewart had some heavy liberal bias. Clinton was made fun of many times for his inability to get Arafat to concede on signing the Jerusalem accord that would have enacted a cease fire between the Palestinians and Jews. I thought Clinton was always a chump for not pulling off the last ditch effort attempt to get his name signed into the political history books as an effective President. Instead he'll go down known as a perverted slob with an affinity for McD's food.

Like most of Bid Media, with the Daily Show and Jon Stewart it's just business. It's nothing personal or political (Dan Rather being one big exception though).

I apologize to anyone if this post sounds like it's taking a partisan stance on the Daily Show. I tend to agree with a conservative viewpoint more often than a liberal stance but I find Jon Stweart to be a refreshing change from the poli talking heads every now and then. He's just someone who doesn't try to state his party's line as the right way to go like Tucker Carlson does on Crossfire. Stewart really is the closest thing to a non-partisan and middle of the road guy that we're going to get on TV until both major parties find some common ground with eachother and try to help out the people instead of their closest party members.

They're harsher on republicans now since they occupy all the positions of power now. Picking on democrats now is like making fun of retarded people.

Anyone who thinks they didn't make fun of Dems when Clinton was president obviously just started watching the show in the last couple years.

I also understood why Stewart snapped at Tucker the way he did on his show Crossfire:

Any Dave Chappelle fans remember the story Dave told about getting pissed at some fan doing the Rick James impression in front of him and his family when they were at Disney Land (or wherever it was)?

Stewart felt the same way.

He came onto the show under the impression that Tucker would treat him with some sort of laid-back respect while he was on there but instead Tucker waved the condescnding prick carrot in front of Stewart who bit but then wouldn't let go and threw Tucker off from his high horse unexpectedly. It wasn't a Republican vs. Liberal or serious media vs. liberal media encounter, it was just a matter of common decency and respect. Tucker acted like his shit didn't stank and his my work is holier than thou vibe pissed off Stewart who just came onto the show to talk about stuff, not get ripped by some partisan puppy dog. Stewart's comments were just a knee jerk response to Tucker's inferiority complex he took aim at Stewart with and the man just wasn't going to let Tucker put himself over him on the show like that.

Kinda like the boyfriend who witnesses his girlfriend getting hit on by the guy who makes jokes about the guy in front of his girl.

That's just not going to fly if you have any self-respect.

Dave came to the amusement park feeling that he could get treated with some respect by not getting bothered by someone that saw him on TV. Stewart came onto Crossfire under the impression that Tucker was actually going to challenge and engage him in a way that would have been beneficial towards erasing the "my shit is better than yours" mentality that many of the news stations have with eachother, which could have led to something worthwhile for Stewart to talk to Tucker about. Instead, Tucker decided to act like the jackass fan that thought it would be amusing to treat Dave like a side show act in front of his family while Stewart was instead treated like a dancing monkey by the man with the big tie on TV.

Stewart's comments might have come off as immature or infantile liberal belly aching and that's not an out of line assessment. But in reality, he was just pissed at the way Tucker came onto the show riding on his high horse while kicking sand in Stewart's face in the way of treating him like a porn start would get treated on the Howard Stern show by badgering them into showing their tits. He just wasn't down with that.

I can't fault Stweart for getting pissed at Tucker the way he did.

On the current topic:

Rummy needs to be replaced in at least a year or less. Too much negative shit has gone on during his watch that can't be explained in a reasonable and good way and that's just going to be too much bad PR for a Presidential cabinet that has been under fire for a while for being tools and partisan puppets. He's got unwarranted baggage attached to him that could rival Ashcroft's at some point down the line and that's when the sharks are going to take an unecessary chomp out of Bush like they did with his US army resume. The bad PR a story like this or something else can get won't be worth keeping Rummy around much longer after the facts.

Agreed, they hammered the Dems, but it seems liike more and more that their commentary has gotten more and more political. Maybe it's just the climate of the news today, maybe it's just Stewart's personal bias, but he seems just that much more vicious when talking about Bush and Co. nowadays.

The "they're dumbass's, we know" coverage that Republicans get from the Daily Show is only going to intensify over the next couple of years. It would be the same way for Liberals if they had the same sort of control in the government like Conservatives do today.

Al Gore got no love from Jon Stewart and neither did Bill Clinton when he gave pardons to his assorted felon friends post-Presidency. The Arafat failure was also used to rip Clinton a new one along with bringing up the Medicare and Medical program reforms that him and Hilary cooked up in 1993 that proved to be one of his biggest misfires in the Presidential office (besides the one he shot Monica in the face with). Stewart also took aim at the UN in '99 when they bungled things up in Kosovo and rided them for making the US get involved (again) in a European conflict that should have been settled a long time earlier between the opposing country factions.

To Crono: My bad, I read your post as you used to listen to Liddy then stopped by choice, not by program change. He wasn't that bad with guests or callers, but when it would comment on the news it was boring as hell.

To Jobber: I don't watch OMG FAUX NEWS LOL2004 six hours/day. I probably watch that station at the most an hour/weekday split between Special Report and O'Reilly. Get it str8, hippie (and yes I know you were kidding)

RE Jon Stewart: I don't watch that show much but I view him as an entertainer. I remember he poked quite a bit of fun at Clinton when he was in office. He may be a liberal and work harder at getting Republicans, but he does make fun of both sides so to me it's all good. When people say they get news from Stewart that they don't from Big Media, I think back to how the National Enquirer was leading the charge on Jesse Jackson and his bastard child.

RE: Sass

Dave came to the amusement park feeling that he could get treated with some respect by not getting bothered by someone that saw him on TV

Too bad. Dave's a celebrity and must endure the lowlights of fame. No different than any movie/sports public figure. It sucks, but hey, he's DAVE CHAPPELLE BITCH...

Anyone who thinks they didn't make fun of Dems when Clinton was president obviously just started watching the show in the last couple years.

I did just start watching this year since it started airing on CityTV. I understand the Republicans are in power and they will be mocked more but it seemed like in the coverage of the election- Bush got destroyed a lot more then Kerry. When they covered the Veep debate- Cheney got made fun of a lot more then Edwards. It's things like that. And when Kerry was on the show he totally softballed him. I think the show is hilarious but it does have a bias.

He's biased against the things that he finds wrong in Presidentials cabinets, whether they're Republican or Liberal dominated.

Since this year- I understand everyone gets criticised on the show but there's definetley a bias there.

The fact is, a LOT of young people watch him to get news.

I could watch communist government propaganda to get my news, but that doesn't mean the people spewing it are journalists, it means they're propagandists.

He has no credentials, credibility, or education as a journalist, and people who watch the show understand that, so it's fine by me.

"Justice" (I forgot who you used to be, sorry) got the idea backwards. People watch the Daily Show because things like Desperate Housewives, Michael Jackson's boy fetish, and Donald Trump's new hire get attention and screen time from the "serious media."
