Guest Jason Report post Posted December 16, 2004 When you say the name Jim Carrey, everybody immediately thinks of the man with the off-the-wall energy who has given us such comedic gems as The Mask, The Grinch, Ace Ventura, Liar Liar and many more. He has also learned the dramatic side of things and has given awesome performances in The Truman Show, Man on the Moon, The Majestic and most recently, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (The Golden Globes says its a comedy. IT'S NOT! If Man on the Moon is a drama, then so is Eternal Sunshine!) To date, he has recieved 6 globe nominations. 4 in the Best actor in a comedy for The Mask, Liar Liar, The Grinch and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, none of which he has won for... Although the 2005 awards have not been announced so that MIGHT change. and 2 in the Dramatic category for The Truman Show and Man on the Moon. Both of which he has won for. So there you have it. He is a very versatile actor who gets well mentioned in both the dramatic and comedic fields. And yet, come Oscar time, it is likely he will be ignored AGAIN and will still have never recieved an Oscar nomination. It looks like Leonardo DiCapprio will. Wow. You know your not liked when Leonardo DiCapprio gets nominated above you. It is because of this that I think he is under-rated. His performance in Man on the Moon is widely regarded as the best non nominated performaces in history. I may just be biased because I am also Canadian (even though he is YET another Canadian who is now an American... Bugger...) but I think he is one of the best dramatic actors around. Sure, he usually is a little silly in his performances but does that not just show his versatility? Maybe the Oscar people just look at him and say "Oh, Jim Carrey. He's just an ass anyway. Next candidate!" Do they ever stop and see that his best performances are in DRAMATIC movies? So, what do you think? Is Jim Carrey under-rated as a dramatic actor or does he just suck? 2GOLD 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Not sure if he IS under-rated since the critics have been fans of his dramatic work, except for "The Majestic". He'll never see the inside of the Academy Awards in his life and they might give him one of those cheap "lifetime acheivement" awards unless there is a grip or boom mic operator in the running that year when he's in his 70's. If you mean box office dramatic draw? Yes, he is definately been under-rated but that is his own doing. He is known as a comedy actor and it's unlikely he'll ever shed that label. Hell, even Eternal Sunshine got labeled a comedy. Truthfully, by Hollywood standards such as Golden Globes and Oscars...Jim Carrey still has never been in a dramatic role. Man on the Moon was a Golden Globe win for comedy for Jim. Sunshine he is in the comedy catergory for a role that had ONE comedy segment and that is when he was in his memory as a little kid. It's hard to say where Jim stands. His dramatic roles may be viewed by fans and critics as drama, but the award shows still stick him in comedy. So yes and no is the only answer I can give. Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 The Academy hates him, but I've always thought he was a much better dramatic performer than comedic one. Truman is by far my favourite movie of his.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 If Robin Williams could win an Oscar, Jim Carrey can.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 He's definitely a great dramatic actor, but I sort of grew tired of him about five years ago. Same deal with Sandler.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 The Truman Show and Man on the Moon is probably his best work as an actor, and really his best movies he's ever made.
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 I object to the classification of Ace Ventura as a comedic gem, and I didn't think Man on the Moon was all that good. He was good in the Truman Show, but it was a shoddy movie. I do prefer his dramatic work, which isn't such a big deal because I enjoy very little of his comedic work. I also generally prefer the dramatic side of actors who do both.
Special K 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 He's also pretty darn good at picking scripts now. Or perhaps people with a quirky dramatic role seek him out. I am glad that his upcoming lemony snicket's way too long title does look funny though, because Bruce Almighty was so shitty that I didn't laugh once, except at one of Steve Carrell's outtakes. Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 The Academy hates him? Based upon what? I think it's stupid that he at least didn't get a nomination for Truman Show.
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 He won a golden globe for Man on the Moon, which honestly conflicts me because he performance as Andy Kaufman was spot on but the movie wasn't really that great. I figure he'll at least get nominated for an Academy Award but he'll more than likely never win one.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Report post Posted December 16, 2004 They view Jim Carrey as a Comedy goofball. Which makes ZERO sense because Robin Williams had done equally goofy stuff and yet has been nominated by the academy 3 times and won for Good Will Hunting. Tom Hanks did goofball comedies and they have practically renamed the award "The Tom Hanks Award". I mean CUBA GOODING JR has a god damn award much less an Nomination. The man who starred in SNOW DOGS has a ACADEMY AWARD! Jamie Foxx this year will join the list of former comedy actors winning an academy award. How can they have a issue of the star of Ace Ventura getting a nomination when the star of Booty Call will be picking up an award (yes; booty call was a gem but work with me here). Leo will take Carey's spot though. Not saying he doesn't deserve it; Leo's just as good as dramatic actor.

Guest Smues Report post Posted December 16, 2004 The Majestic was the only Jim Carry movie off the top of my head that I liked. I can't call him under rated though seeing as critics always seem to love him.
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Jim Carrey is primarily annoying. He stopped being funny when he realised everyone thought he was funny. Then he started acting like a complete tool. I anticipate his comedies with a fork to my eye sockets. His dramas do not entice me whatsoever. He's nothing. He had two amazing movies: Cable Guy and Dumb & Dumber. After that he could've jumped in a lake for all I care.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Jim Carrey is my probably my favourite actor out there. I used to not like him but then I saw Liar Liar and it blew me away. The Truman Show and Man on the Moon should've easily won him an Oscar, let alone a nomination. I think the actors in the Academy are jealous of him and still see him as the guy who talked out out of his ass. Which is sad because he's such so more then that. Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Liar Liar is easily Carrey's most annoying movie - followed closely by the Mask. The commercials for Bruce Almighty were a distant 3rd place.

He also has been able to get critical and commercial acclaim and despite at first being known as the guy who talked out of his ass, he was able to successfully switch into drama with the Truman Show and is a saught after actor from everyone. Liar Liar is Jim Carrey's greatest comedic performance as it's a total one man show but without the annoying plot and special effects that the Mask had. I just remember seeing that movie and being blown away by the guy I used to hate b/c of Ace Ventura, Mask and Batman. Carrey's a genius though- I've seen him some of his comedy and it's hilarious

He's something I COULD GIVE A FUCK HOW MUCH MONEY HIS MOVIES MAKE. FUCKING SPIDERMAN AND LORD OF THE RINGS RAKE IN MOVIES AND THOSE MOVIES ARE THE ZITS ON THE FACE OF CINEMA. Jim Carrey means nothing to me. His comedic approach to steal the scene from everyone is tired. If he wants to do that, he should be funny. I've seen award ceremonies were he dresses up goofy to put himself over everyone else. Buts its not funny. Bruce Almighty, which I never saw, was not funny. He's not funny. Not funny. Not funny. He was the best in Cable Guy, and that was because of a delightful script. Carrey took a chance on a dark comedy, and while many people who need their humor spoonfed to them hated it, it was a subtle and satirical comedy that touched on an actual serious matter. In fact BOB, I'd say some of the satire was directed at your kind.

But she's the only gal who would scarf down Doritos and Vanilla Coke slurpees while watching Pauly Shore movies. Now that, MOTHERFUCKERS, is true love. FUCKING SPIDERMAN AND LORD OF THE RINGS RAKE IN MOVIES AND THOSE MOVIES ARE THE ZITS ON THE FACE OF CINEMA. And the Oscar goes to Banky For the most part, I agree with him. Carrey ceased being relevant to me around the late 90's.
Guest Smues Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Carrey was on Letterman recently, and it was one of the most painful guest appearances I've ever seen. It's hard to drive a joke into the ground in the time between two commercial breaks, but he managed to do it twice. I was literally Screaming at my TV for him to stop. Whatever talent he may have had in the past is long gone.
Guest Failed Mascot Report post Posted December 16, 2004 I liked his movies when I was younger. At my present age the only things that he has done that entertain me are the old Fire Marshall Bill skits along with the movie Man on the Moon. I think he did a great job at portraying Kauffman, and even Banky needs to give him his dues there.
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Man on the Moon was Jim Carrey at his most pretentious. He portrayed an unlikable person, and somehow, made me despise him even more. Kind of like Val Kilmer playing Jim Morrison. If Jim Morrison was half as much of a faggot as Val portrayed him to be, he deserved his fate.

I don't hate The Doors as some do, but Jim Morrison was a fucking pile of shit. At least thats what Oliver Stone wants us all to think.
Guest Failed Mascot Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Read the book, it gives a much better insight to the man. The movie while pretty enjoyable as just something to watch doesn't really do his life justice. Although I do believe it is the only film where you'll see Meg Ryan's bare tits. Of course, after an hour of Oliver Stone's abortion I turned it off.
