1234-5678 Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 Can you name an actor or actress whose promising or established career was just totally shattered by being in a terrible movie or by a terrible performance? One that comes to mind immediately for me is Lori Petty. After playing Keanu Reeves' love interest in "Point Break" and Geena Davis' kid sister in big time hit "A League Of Their Own", she picked a couple of bad roles, most notably starring opposite Pauly Shore in "In The Army Now". But the role that killed her career? "Tank Girl." I remember seeing the trailer for this in the theater and just knowing that she was done. Now granted, I have never allowed myself to watch what is most likely a horribly offensive film, but I think the evidence speaks for itself. Where has she been since? From a star turn in "League" to "Tank Girl" to ???????
Guest TheLastBoyscout Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 - HEAVEN'S GATE killed Michael Cimino's career just after he established himself with THE DEER HUNTER. That's all I got right now.
Gary Floyd Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 I can think of movies that nearly destroyed careers "Peeping Tom" basically killed the films directors career. Ironically enough, it's now considered a horror/suspense/film noir classic, and is a great film. Think of a British answer to Hitchcocks "Psycho" (it came out the same year) Diane Ladd's career was almost killed by "Carnosaur". I'm reading the book right now. The film in itself, is a so bad it's good categorey IMO. I'm just saying, from being nominated for best supporting actress, to being in a bad "Jurassic PArk" rip off two years later is not a good career move. Though his career is not dead, John Travolta has mostly been in a pretty big rut after "Battlefield Earth".Plus, Barry Pepper's career hasn't exactly taken off since then.
Lil' Bitch Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 "Gigli" for Ben Affleck, I don't think he's fully recovered yet from it. Eddie Murphy was going on a downward spiral with nonstop flops following Showtime until he hit it big with Daddy Day Care.
Vigo Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 "Showgirls" pretty much killed any chance that Elizabeth Berkley had in mainstream cinema.
BlackFlagg Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 Eddie Murphy was going on a downward spiral with nonstop flops following Pluto Nash (I'm foggy on his movie release order) until he hit it big with Daddy Day Care. Actually the only thing he did between Pluto Nash and Daddy Day Care was I Spy... he did Showtime before Nash though
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 Chevy - Memoirs of an Invisible Man
1234-5678 Posted December 19, 2004 Author Report Posted December 19, 2004 Chevy - Memoirs of an Invisible Man Am I the only one who liked that?
Lil' Bitch Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 Okay thanks BlackFlagg. I'll edit it now.
Downhome Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Chevy - Memoirs of an Invisible Man Am I the only one who liked that? No, I know a ton of people who love it, including myself.
2GOLD Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Chevy - Memoirs of an Invisible Man Am I the only one who liked that? No, I know a ton of people who love it, including myself. Agreed. I don't think any of us paid money to see it though. Chevy was killed by "Cops and Robbersons" and he wasn't helped by the beyond horrible "Vegas Vacation".
Blue Bacchus Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Raul Julia actually died from Street Fighter... :: Ducks Chair and Runs ::

JasonX Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Emilio Estevez - Mighty Ducks Not true. Mighty Ducks did extremely well at the box office and spawned TWO sequels.
Vigo Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Yeah, I agree. Nothing really killed Emilio's career he just got old and faded off. He is coming back though in Mighty Ducks 4.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 What about actors where a role permantly typecasted them and thus weren't able to get out of that role or get a different role? I can't think of any off the top of my head but I'm sure there are examples of them.
Nighthawk Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I haven't wathced Tank Girl either, but I thought I'd mention that it's an ok comic book. There's bestiality! Bob Hoskins almost broke out until Mario Brothers.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Daniel Stern-Bushwhacked.
PLAGIARISM! Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Hoskins will never be a big movie actor, but he does alright over here. I can't imagine he would ever have been huge.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Raul Julia actually died from Street Fighter... :: Ducks Chair and Runs :: if we are going to be tasteless... Brandon Lee-The Crow
Nighthawk Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Hoskins will never be a big movie actor, but he does alright over here. I can't imagine he would ever have been huge. I think he was almost B list after Roger Rabbit.
1234-5678 Posted December 20, 2004 Author Report Posted December 20, 2004 Damon Wayans: "Celtic Pride" and "The Great White Hype"
Nighthawk Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I like Major Payne. Other than that, Damon Wayans never did anything good in film, save his BHC cameo.
1234-5678 Posted December 20, 2004 Author Report Posted December 20, 2004 Hey, Damon was in "Last Boy Scout". Now there is a fantastic flick, some of the greatest hardass lines in action movie history.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Damon doesn't have a dead career. He had a good run on Stand Up and has a good hit sitcom.
1234-5678 Posted December 20, 2004 Author Report Posted December 20, 2004 Damon doesn't have a dead career. He had a good run on Stand Up and has a good hit sitcom. A dead movie career though.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Then I guess by your definition...Charlie Sheen has a dead career too. His career is booming nontheless. He has a hit shot and a few endorsement deals.
