Guest LooneyTune Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 Chris Elliot was always either suporting role (barely) or lower. The guy was never the star unless the movie sucked anus juice and had zero star power.
Nighthawk Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 Somebody's thinks Chris Elliot's career was killed by Cabin Boy? If you like Chris Elliot, you like that movie, if you don't, you don't. It was the Chris Elliot defined. Like he was sitting around reading scripts, going "Hm, which of these will make me a breakout Hollywood mainstream moviestar so I won't have to do that weird stuff I used to do?" Damn.

Besides, I don't think he really wants to be a big Hollywood star, seeing that he either cracks you up or annoys you. IMO, he's our generations Andy Kaufman-not as far as brillience, but the fact that he could never be a big movie star. Ever seen Peter Jackson's "The Frigheners?" I'm a fan of that movie. While it didn't kill any careers, I think it definately should have made Jeffrey Combs a star of sorts, seeing to how he's damn near perfect in that movie. Next to "Re-Animator", this is his best performance.
Nighthawk Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 That's a cool movie. The grim reaper thing is pretty good but then it turns out to be... Jake Busey. Kind of a let down. His dad would have been scarier.
the max Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 Heh, so Kiefer's career was ruined due to Julia dumping him? I wouldn't say ruined, he still gets consistent work when he wants it. He was supposed to be the next great actor, but he went AWOL after they broke up so he kind of did it to himself in a way...
King Kamala Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 I believe Nothing But Trouble killed the most careers in a single film. John Candy, Dan Akroyd and Chevy Chase were all never really that good after that piece of tripe. Dan Akroyd's developed into a serviceable enough character actor but hasn't starred or even had a supporting part in anything good since and John Candy starred in a bunch of crap in the year or two before his death. As for Chevy Chase, well we've already trashed him too much in this thread. The only one whose career survived entact was Demi Moore.
Nighthawk Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 Well, there's actually nine words in the picture... That movie didn't even scratch his career though. His film career, maybe.
Guest Astro Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 Not sure if he was mentioned, but what can we credit with killing off Burt Reynold's mainstream career? He went from the only actor to ever be the No.1 box office draw for 5 years in a row (78-83) to starring in a mildly successful sitcom by the early 90's (Evening Shade) and trying to rekindle his career with Breaking In and Cop and a Half....
Precious Roy Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 Well, there's actually nine words in the picture... That movie didn't even scratch his career though. His film career, maybe. He didn't have a film career before Leonard because he'd never ventured into the medium, he was a headline standup and then crossed into TV, but he might have had a decent film career if Leonard hadn't been such a bomb

Cannonball Run II?

cabbageboy Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 Bill Cosby had been in several reasonably good movies with Sidney Poitier in the 70s. He was more TV and standup though. I'd say Reynolds was hurt a lot by several late 80s flops. Dare I say HEAT? And I don't mean the Michael Mann movie. The only movie I've ever seen where the main heel is literally talked into blowing his brains out. Just bad, but hilariously so.
Guest Astro Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 Burt was also hurt by rumors of drug abuse and having AIDS. (The drug part was true)

Like he was sitting around reading scripts, going "Hm, which of these will make me a breakout Hollywood mainstream moviestar so I won't have to do that weird stuff I used to do?" Damn. I just mean he was pretty popular after his sitcom "Get A Life" then after Cabin Boy he kind of disappeared for a bit. I think he was on SNL for a season, right?
Precious Roy Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 Chris Elliott has always been a cult performer, Cabin Boy never had a chance at landing him a leading man movie career because it was only meant to appeal to his cult fans, his cult fans were the only reason that movie was even made. His most popular role (Something About Mary) came several years after Cabin Boy. And seriously, anyone who hates Cabin Boy is retarded
Nighthawk Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 I feel that the new standard for saying whether or not something is funny should be that you must say something which is the same style of humor which you do think is funny and is better. If you can't, then it's not your place to decide.

Nighthawk Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 That wasn't funny. The time in the hardcore discussion folder when Captain of Outer Space said things about how I was bad and he wished I had children so he could stomp on their testicles so I could feel the pain he feels every day and I responded with a picture of Colonel Sanders was funny. Like that.
Nighthawk Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 No, don't make it up. If you made it up your opinion is biased.

Masked Man of Mystery Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 Mark Hamill Star Wars killed his career. Yeah, I know, he does voices for cartoons now, but I don't count that. He honestly can't show his face on a movie screen anymore without doing a parody from Star Wars. Actually, the beard he had on Comic Book: The Movie managed to make me forget that this was Luke I was looking at, which is rather remmarkable becaue he hasn't aged that badly. As for Carrie Fisher, well, she's bi polar, had a coke problem, and is now an author of a few books.
Precious Roy Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 Carrie Fisher's most memorable role was in Blues Brothers IMO, but yeah, she was totally typecasted from SW
cabbageboy Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 I had to even strain to remember her in Blues Bros. so no it isn't her most memorable role. Wasn't she Belushi's girlfriend in that, who was tracking him down with a gun?
Anakin Flair Posted December 26, 2004 Report Posted December 26, 2004 So when did Sylvester Stallone's career completely fall apart? Was it with "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot!"? I mean, the never-ending sequels of "Rocky" and "Rambo" weren't great or anything, but they weren't nearly as brutal as "Stop!" I haven't seen him since "Driven". Hey was in a direct to video bomb called "Eye See You", or something like that, last year. Yeah, I'd say his career is dead.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Posted December 26, 2004 Report Posted December 26, 2004 Don't forget his Reality show tanked as well.
