Guest Jason Report post Posted December 31, 2004 Ok I got this one of Livingwithstyle.com so credit to the person on there. Three prisoners of war were blind-folded and lined up one behind the other all facing the same direction about to get executed. The commanding officer gave them one last chance to save their own lives by solving a riddle. He placed hats on their heads, took off their blindfolds and told them: "On your heads you have either a black hat or a white hat. If one of you can guess what color hat you are wearing I will spare all three of you. If any of you move or make a sound other than to answer you will all be shot dead. You have 60 seconds starting now." Thirty seconds had passed and no one said a word. Fifty seconds passed and everyone was still silent. As the commanding officer started counting down from 5 the prisoner in the middle said, "I am wearing a white hat." He was correct and all three of them were freed. How did he know? Ripper 0 Report post Posted December 31, 2004 I don't think you told the riddle right. You were supposed to say how many black hats and how many white ones he had.

Guest Prodigy Report post Posted January 1, 2005 Yeah, you told it wrong. You have to tell the riddle by saying which hats they are wearing. So the first guy has got a black hat, the second a white hat, and the third a black hat. Now, the first guy sees the 2 people in front of him. He sees a white and black hat, but doesn't know what hat he's got. The second guy sees a black hat in front of him. Now he's wondering why the guy in the back isn't saying anything. He then realizes that the guy in the back isn't saying anything because he sees a white and black hat. Thus, the guy in the middle knows he has got a white hat. Lil' Bitch 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2005 Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent. Where did the other dollar go????
Ced 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2005 The last sentence is there to misdirect your logic. The $30 initial payment minus the $5 overcharge equals $25, the actual price for the room. The actual price of the room ($25), plus the amount the three friends got ($3), plus the amount pocketed by the bellhop ($2) accounts for all $30. It doesn't help that I've had this brain teaser thrown at me about a dozen times in the past.

I know a man in his mid-twenties who believes that this "proves how our math system is messed up." I almost had a heart attack trying to explain it to him to get him to see how fucking dumb he is but he still believes that he has proven math wrong. He also told me that he thought that up on his own. He is also quite possibly the most moronic person I have ever met.

Paid 30 Real price 25 -If room is 25 then they actually paid 8.33 each for the room [odd man 8.34] -8.33 from each person [odd man with 8.34] x 3 = 25 -Each guy gets a dollar back makin it 9.33 [odd 9.34] x 3 = 28 -Filthy Bellhop theif pockets 2 -Room renters 28 + Filthy theif 2 =

nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted January 4, 2005 no one could guess it, so I decided to post the answer I know that I'm feeding the troll on this one, but did you not see what Prodigy posted on the 1st? Yeah, you told it wrong.
Guest Jason Report post Posted January 4, 2005 No, because "On your heads you have either a black hat or a white hat" doesn't mean there aren't all of one colour. Yes it does, it means there is at least 1 white hat and 1 black hat, the other is either black or white, if they knew it would be too easy. Remember this is a brain teaser so it's not meant to be too easy.

The Metal Maniac 0 Report post Posted January 4, 2005 Yes it does, it means there is at least 1 white hat and 1 black hat, the other is either black or white, if they knew it would be too easy. It doesn't mean that at all. You all have a black or a white hate means that every person is wearing a hat that is black or white. It is not implied at all in that sentence that there is at least one of each. Thus, it's easy to assume that they could all be one color.
