Cheers

Recommended Posts

I catch the reruns a lot, and this is one of the funniest shows that was ever on Television. I thought it kind of went downhill after Diane left, but it was still a good show until the very end. Coach was probably my favorite character with Cliff and Norm running close second.

There was a period after Coach died that I thought they were having trouble finding their footing, and I didn't care for the shows after Sam and Rebecca hooked up. Those periods aside, one of the best sitcoms in recent memory. I loved to hate Diane...

I dig CHEERS. I think it was good that Long left when she did. They were running out of different approaches for the Sam-Diane relationship (although those seasons with her are all gold).

WHEN ARE SEASONS 4 and 5 COMING OUT ON DVD???

I love the show, it's in my top ten sitcoms of all time without a doubt. I especially love the very last shot in the series, it was just so powerful and moving to me.

I never really liked Diane, I never found Shelly Long to be funny, just annoying. Coach's death also took some steam away from the show. Once Rebecca came on I thought it improved quite a bit. Although the first few years with Rebecca were good, the show stayed past its welcome in my mind.

Also if you're in Boston, I'd recommend checking out the Bull & Finch pub. The food is great and you get to see the inspiration for Cheers. Hell, while you're in Boston, there's also the replica of the TV bar located at Faneuil Hall.

Very good sitcom, one of the only ones I will watch. Sam was totally lovable and a sleaze at the same time. The only time it ever bugged me is when they would totally stick it to the Cliff character. I know he's supposed to be a loser, but sometimes it got almost uncomfortable.

I know what you mean about the Cliff character, and I agree. One of my favorite Cliff moments would have to be when this new guy in the bar kept picking on him, and finally made Cliff leave, for no good reason really. Cliff says he knows karate, or something like that, and refuses to use it on the guy, so he just leaves. After the bully leaves, Cliff comes back in to prove to everyone the power he has, and does so...then without everyone knowing, he has Diane take him to the hospital.

I love that episode, one of my favorites. It's so funny, yet heartbreaking, all at the same time.

This and Wings are really the only two shows that I watch on TVLand a lot.

I grew up watching Cheers and have always been a fan of Woody Boyd.

That episode, to me, wasn't even funny until the end when you learn Cliff didn't know karate. I just felt bad for Cliff. Really a good episode.

I also may be bias against Rebecca because of my intense hatred for Kristi Allie, but the show just lost something with both Coach and Diane leaving at the same time.

EDIT: I thought I might also mention that the Cheer's theme song is quite awesome.

Two words about the Bull & Finch - tourist trap. It's quite overpriced, so my recommendation is to take some pictures outside the Boston Common location, and some inside the Faneuil Hall one (have a beer if you like).

I'd also avoid the Union Oyster House as it's another tourist trap - go to the No Name seafood restaurant instead.

I love the full version of the Cheers theme. :)

Where Everybody Knows Your Name by Gary Portnoy and Judy Hart Angelo

Making your way in the world today

Takes everything you've got;

Taking a break from all your worries

Sure would help a lot.

Wouldn't you like to get away?

All those night when you've got no lights,

The check is in the mail;

And your little angel

Hung the cat up by it's tail;

And your third fiance didn't show;

Sometimes you want to go

Where everybody knows your name,

And they're always glad you came;

You want to be where you can see,

Our troubles are all the same;

You want to be where everybody knows your name.

Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee's dead;

The morning's looking bright;

And your shrink ran off to Europe,

And didn't even write;

And your husband wants to be a girl;

Be glad there's one place in the world

Where everybody knows your name,

And they're always glad you came;

You want to go where people know,

People are all the same;

You want to go where everybody knows your name.

Where everybody knows your name,

And they're always glad you came;

Where everybody knows your name,

And they're always glad you came...

Shelley Long was painfully unfunny and annoying. I much preferred the show with Kirstie Alley. And Alley was damn hot from 87-89. The Sam Malone character started to wear thin in the early 90s and the by the time the show was about to end, NO ONE in the audience bought him as a ladies man who banged every girl breathing. The "sensitive" Sam Malone character in the last few seasons wasn't great, but his character needed to change, and the new character made for some real solid episodes. Cheers, IMO, was inconsistent, with some very strong seasons, (87-90 was the peak of the show for me), but was just too hit or miss for me to call it an "All Time Great"

Cheers is one of my favorite shows. I am currently starting a DVD collection of Cheers. The Diane/Sam relationship is a great piece of storytelling through humor and comeuppance. When she left and Rebecca replaced her, it wasn't the same, and the quality dipped a little, but it's a great show nonetheless. My favorite episode would have to be the pilot, "Give Me A Ring Sometimes" and the finale, because it seems like it all comes full circle.

I actually didn't mind it after Coach died & Long left, though that is when they were at their peak. It just kinda turned into a different show after they left, which was something different but not bad, i think. I love the later ones pretty much just for Frasier & Lilith, since Bebe Neuwirth kicks ass. My only gripe is that Sam just got stupider as the show went on for no reason. Pissed me off a little.

All stupid sitcom characters get stupider as seasons pass. It's an unwritten rule.
