Bosworth & Spacey Aboard Superman

Source: The Hollywood Reporter, Variety January 7, 2005

Kate Bosworth is in talks to play Lois Lane, and Kevin Spacey is set to play nemesis Lex Luthor in Bryan Singer's Superman for Warner Bros. Pictures, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The comic book movie would reunite the two actors, who currently appear in Spacey's Beyond the Sea as Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin.

The casting of Lane was a long process that ultimately rested on a chemistry test between the actress and Brandon Routh, who is playing Superman, says the trade. Bosworth reportedly beat out the likes of Claire Danes, Linda Cardellini, and Michelle Monaghan.

Spacey, who is in rehearsals for "National Anthems" at the Old Vic, will do a limited run of "The Philadelphia Story" at the theater before moving to the Superman movie, which has a March 3 start date at Fox Studios Sydney.

Singer also told Variety that he and his writers chose a track that falls somewhere between the original film and the successful series Smallville.

"It's a little like 'X-Men,' where the mutants existed when the movie began," Singer said. "It's not an origin story; I didn't want to remake what Richard Donner did so well in the original, and didn't want to tread on the great work they're doing on 'Smallville.' He's already part of the culture; he has left the planet. This is the story of his return."

I'm interested in seeing how Singer portrays Lex Luthor in this film. Kevin Spacey is a great actor and has previous experience working with Singer, so that's a good thing. I haven't really seen any of Kate Bosworth's movies, so I'm unclear how good of an actress she is. Hopefully she'll be able to pull off the role well.

I do wonder what the status of Clark Kent will be since Superman has been off the planet for six years. I'm sure Singer will have Clark appear in the film, but how that will happen is still unclear. Clark couldn't have disappeared at the same time as Superman and then return at the exact same time. I suppose Superman could've had some kind of android pretend to be Clark for the last six years.

I have no problem with Spacey, but I hope this Lex isn't like Gene Hackman's Lex. I want the Lex that's portrayed as a powerful businessman/criminal mastermind.

Bosworth isn't someone I would've considered for Lois, but Singer looked at alot of actresses, so I'll trust him here.

Being one of the biggest Superman fans out there, I would just like to say that I'm completely underwhelmed by the direction this movie is headed.

Hope I'm wrong.

Why are you underwhelmed?

I'm underwhelmed in the sense that on paper I don't see how this improves or is even equal to the "Smallville" cast.

For example I think that Erica Durance is just perfect as Lois Lane and I see it hard for someone to do as good a job as she has.

I'm a big fan of Kevin Spacey and he does great work, but I won't be able to look at him as Lex Luthor.

so in other words, it would be impossible for you not to be underwhelmed by any choice they made.

Not necessarily, I'm not one of those "If it's not the Smallville cast, screw the movie" fans.

I just for whatever reason don't see Spacey as Lex Luthor

The problem with Lois is that they cast someone who is 4 years younger than Erica Durance, yet storyline wise this is a movie about Superman's return. That is what totally has me confused at the moment.

I'd assume they'd go more along the lines of John Shea's Lex, but more ruthless.

I see them going with a Luthor similar to the one that was in Superman: Red Son. Singer will most likely combine the different takes on Luthor in the comics, live-action television shows, movies, and cartoons.

It's called makeup?

But I do agree with you; Erica is a very good Lois.

Kevin Smith had been hired to write the screenplay at one time. Smith decided to leave once producer Jon Peters told him he "didn't want Superman to wear the suit, he didn't want him to fly, and he wanted Superman to fight a giant spider in the end". Smith thought these demands were ridiculous and were not true to the character. Director Tim Burton was also briefly attached to the project for a time before bowing out for similar reasons.

Did they keep this script?

Where did you hear this? Because this sounds like complete crap. How can one have a Superman movie when he doesn't wear the suit OR fly?

There is no way Singer would stand for this.

For some odd reason when I saw Bosworth I could only think of The Boz.
