Solving Marker Lateness: The Thread

Recommended Posts

Copy/pasted from the Storm 1-14 card thread...

A marker deadline would be a very good idea, and it's been my own fault that I've avoided that subject. However, when you consider writers having a deadline and markers having a deadline... writers have four to five days, generally, and can get extensions. Markers, under any sort of deadline, would have two to three hours, and in my limited experience I really don't think that's enough time to make a good decision. The way that I thought of to address it was to bump the due time for writers up to 6 pm EST, but that would likely increase the number of extensions and also increase the number of no-shows. Other than that, I really don't know what we could do, although I'm leaning with Tom on this one, as Friday shows suck the big one. We'll discuss it in CC and try to come to a solution, and if any of you guys have ideas this is the thread to throw them out there and discuss them.

Oh, that's true. But it can make things a bit problematic when we lose a whole day on match-writing. I know for me there is sometime only one evening in the week that I can get a really good crack at, and if that evening occurs the day after the show is meant to have gone up and the card isn't there, I have to rush. Presumably this applies to other people as well. One of the reasons I used to be so frustrated when Thoth was so late at putting the card up was that he would post Storm on a friday and Saturday is often one of my major match-writing days, and without the card up I basically had a whole day that I could have been writing, and have to rush it from then on when normally I would have been doing other things.

These sentence might not make much sense as I am currently watching a documentary on the decreasing amount of sunlight reaching the planet.

As for a solution... dunno. Although like others have said, maybe moving Storm to the Saturday could lessen the 'drunk bastard' phenomenon.

As long as it's up by, say, noon the next day, I don't really care. I don't think it's as big of a problem as it's being made out to be anyway.

Moving back the writer's deadline only increases the number of no-shows and extensions, the latter of which only bring us back up to the deadline we have now. Setting a marker's deadline affects the process of fair and accurate judgement if they feel like they have to hurry and make a decision between two tight matches.

As far as the Friday shows goes, maybe if we just move the shows back a day, to a Sunday - Thursday - Tuesday rotation? It affects the current Monday show for the worse, but at least we get rid of the Friday show in the process.

Can't the markers just get drunk on a different day, like the rest of us?

:P

Dude... It's Mad Dog Friday. It just doesn't work on any other day. ;)

Just because I have a compulsion to pretend I'm the Voice of Reason, I'd just like to say that the simplest solution is for the markers to just hold off drinking till they've gotten their work done. In practice, I realize the problems with this, and that drinking isn't the only reason shows go up late.

Okay, I'll leave now.

To address the one’s who said they don’t care if they show goes up a day late; you guys don’t really show up for matches much, anyway. So I’d imagine it wouldn’t bother you at all.

Markers have lives, yes, and so do the writers. We as writers get matches in on Friday’s and let’s face it, more than half of us probably procrastinate until that last day to finish the matches that we write. I don’t think having the show on Friday is the problem; we’ve had the same issues on other days of the week, minus the falling-over-drunk issues of this past one, of course. It is still there, however.

I don’t think we need to say “marker’s are to have their matches in by 8 p.m. EST” so to say. Not that strict of a rule, but rather if Tom is posting Lockdown and he won’t get the show up until 12 A.M. then all matches need to be in by then, or at least alert the show poster of the status of the match. “I’m having to rethink this match a bit, they’re both close” or something.

It basically all boils down to keeping a good open line of communication going. Everyone seems to have AIM, how hard is it to keep in touch with that, or drop a PM in somebody’s box? If you know you won’t be able to mark a match by time the show needs to go up then why not request that show off much like the writers do? If you have something come up why not take 5 minutes to jump online and alert somebody so they can mark the matches for you, or send them to somebody else to be marked if it’s that late?

Anyway, enough ranting from me. I just want to see this place thrive and not let a simple thing like communication get in the way… and yes, once the site goes up when should hopefully get some new people in here. Hopefully. ;)

Like that time we made sweet monkey love in the cabana on Oahu? Let's try to keep this a civil discussion with out all the lubricant if you can Spike.

That's some top quality peace-keeping, Tom.

And on the marker lateness subject... Mike should have sent the matches over to Tom and us, but what can we say? He didn't 'cause of the overwhelming drunkeness, alcohol impairs judgement and shit happens.
