So I'm watching my DVD set of season one and I get to thinking "What happened to Luke Ventura?". That was a great character to work opposite Al. The man who's basically there to show Al what could have been if he didn't get married. I just think he was 10 times better than Griff.

 

So what happened to him? Why was he axxed?

And yeah, I was never a big fan of Griff or any of the other NO MA'AM guys, especially when they started dominating every single episode in the later years.

I loved the episodes that centered around NO MA'AM. The only thing that really irritated me about some of the later episodes was Bud's "Grandmaster B" character. I thought they really ran that into the ground. I hear they originally had a spin-off based around Bud at college planned, but it was scrapped, and the pilot episode was instead made into a regular Married with Children ep.

He's the guy that works in the shoe store with Al in Season 1 and parts of Season 2 as well I believe.

Yeah I got Seasons 1 and 2 as well. Great stuff, its never gets old in my book, especially Al's insults to fat women. Can't wait for Season 3 to come out next Tuesday.

Some of the insults Al said to the fat women were priceless.

 

I never liked how when Amanda Bearse became Executive Producer/Writer it got to the point where the Marcy character was more involved and always won and Al was left out to dry.

Those episode always irriated me. mostly because I never really cared fore Marcy in the first place and it always bugged me whenever she would always get the best of Al in whatever plan hes up to. even when she had nothing to do with them.

 

best examples would be the "Reverend Al" episode and the one where Al and Griff tried to blackmail their boss.

 

And the worse storyline/charater out of the intire series: Seven! ugh!. I hated that stupid little shit.

Al seems more alive later in the series. Its why I liked the early episodes best. It looked like life had drained him and he was making do. Later in the series its "Hurray! Marcy fucked up my plans so lets all go to the nudie bar".

 

Basically you can tell a difference once Ron Levitt left and he completely turned into "lively Al" when Michael Moye became just a name in the credits and was for the most part gone too.

Totally. Al became a caricature of himself like so many great sitcom characters after a long run. Come to think of it, their characters' descents were almost identical, if you think about it.

yea the whole show changed with time. It became more of a parody instead of a sitcom about a depressed husband who hates his life but hey thats all there is so whatever (which made al a great character to begin with)

 

I also hate when marcy or someone else ruins als plans.

 

However I like Jefferson more then steve because he was more of a foil for al and I enjoyed his freeloading jiggalo ways. and making fun of marcy behind her back was fun

 

 

for ex episode where peggy and the other wives wonder why their men keep going to the nudie bar. guys getr back one night but jeffereson stays back and switches into a secuirty guard uni to fool marcy. guys come in not look directly at women at als request (you need time to adjust your eyes) women lambaste them al: its a place to go to unwide and talk ....and watch surgically enhanced hooters sway oddly to bad music"

 

jefferson comes in wearing uni "Hey guys just got back from guardin stuff whats going on?"

 

marcy informs him the others went to a nudie bar jefferson gives an over the top fake indigant repsonse

I think the final episode with Luke was the one where Al has a fight with Peggy and goes to stay at Luke's apartment. Just checked the insert thing with the credits and titles, and it was called "Al Loses His Cherry".

 

Steve and Jefferson both had their strong points. Steve was funny because he was (almost) the exact opposite of Al, yet was always winding up being part of Al's plans.

 

Jefferson was more comical and was a mooch, but him and Al had no differences, which didn't create any kind of conflict.

The episodes where Steve came back were good. Like when he shows up at the car wash well-dressed with a limousine to make Marcy look stupid, but then it turns out he's just a limo driver. Nice O Henry finish.

Crimes Against Obesity is one of my favorite eps.

 

And yeah, Bearse did get a bit of a big head once she had more control. Then of course, she even did *self-insertion* with "Mandy" (Marcy's gay identical cousin), but at least that was only for one ep.

 

I agree with the changes in the writing style--it's really head-scratching if you only saw the later eps to see one of the earliest ones where Al is trying his damndest to get Peg a great anniversary gift...

 

The show is still entertaining later on with the stinging verbal barbs and obvious dummies flying around, but it's a vastly different show.

They phased him out because he was about as one-note as a character can possibly be. His act wasn't that funny in the short first season; I cringe to think about how stale he would've been not too far into the series had his character not been shown the door.

Kelly Bundy is the best dumb blonde character of all time! I loved this conversation she had with her best friend on the episode where she was going to her high school reunion:

 

"There are going to be people from foreign countries there ... like Indiana."

"Indonesians are coming?"

"Yeah. We better polish up on our Spanish."

 

I also liked, "Urethra! I have spoken!"

 

The episode where Al is trying to train her for a trivia show is priceless.

Who could ever forget (later in series) the episode where Bud was nearly killed by King Kong Bundy? With special appearence by Jimmy Lennon Jr. gawking at Kelly's ass.

king kong 1st guested early on in the series as a family member of Peggys appropriate that he was on, since they named al bundy after him (this was confirmed on the E! THS for Married)

 

 

since i read this topic I have beeb watching MWC reruns on fx in the morning. man do I miss this show.

 

Bud moves into the basement, but tries to convince his girlfriend that he has a house by the lake.

When the show was centered around Al, it was tremendous, but when the peripheral characters (well really just Marcy, Steve, and sometimes Jefferson) were highlighted, I found it hard to watch

 

Christina Applegate has tremendous comedic timing and is great at deadpan. She is a very underrated comedic actress

 

I could stand Peg in small doses, when she was featured too much, it was hard to take.

 

Bud was definitely better at "horny, sex depraved young male" than "frustrated 20 something who is smart, but has no money to be educated and make it big" It was very difficult to accept Bud as the "more mature, a sense of reason" Bud towards the series end.

Bud tricking Kelly into thinking Gilligans Island was Robinson Crusoe for a book report was pretty funny. Then when she got in trouble and had to write an essay on Edgar Allan Poe, he tricked her again, pretending the Addams Family was really the Raven.

No... I don't have that problem. While i'm quite young (21 in March) I do appreciate old classics like MWC. However, when i'm with a girl or a friend and it's on, they just don't get it.
