The OAO WWE Royal Rumble 2005 Thread

Recommended Posts

and NWO being The Cabinet's night as they will have all the gold once Jordan wins the US title from Cena as Armageddon 2003 was for Evolution!

Funaki could join JBL's cabinet as Foreign Affairs Minister or something just so they would have all the belts if that happened.

I'm not exactly sure what was up with Orton tonight but he looked like he got the shit beat out of him.  I think we can safely rule him OUT of the title scene at this point, he got decisively squashed.

I dunno if it was mentioned in the thread but I did a Zapruder type slo mo on the final seconds and I think Batista's legs hit before Cena.  Don't be shocked if Teddy Long uses this to give Cena the WWE title match at WM.  In fact, it's likely.

Why is everyone making a big deal out of the Vince thing?  I was so wrapped up in the intensity of the Rumble and who was going to win that I could have cared less about Vince being hurt or not getting the mic himself.  If anything I PREFER Finkel's professional announcement rather than a goofy Vince rant.

This show was awesome tonight.

I dont htink it was supposed to be that much of a squash, but Orton looked completely lost after his concussion or whatever. The guy was totally out of it. It was kind of scary

WORK.

Im surprised no ones mentioned the applause HHH got after he won.

HHH was getting pops, and Orton was getting almost booed out of the building.

"Orton Sucks" chants throughout the whole match

I haven't watched for months till tonight, but man, that showed how over that hot babyface Orton was, huh?

Not only that, but for most of the match the fans were behind HHH, and booing Orton. There were quite a few times in the match that we even had a very loud "Randy (or Orton, I forget) Sucks!!!" chant going.

When Batista/Cena both went out in the Rumble, I figured that they would just say that since both of them "won", and both are on different shows, both of them would be able to go on to WM. That would have made sense to me.

Vince should have made the call there to put Cena over IMO.

If they wanted Cena to win, they would have shown the replay. J. Hungerford's theory sounds more plausible to me than the silly notion of a tie.

Besides, given the several month build of HHH-Batista against the several week build of JBL-Cena, Batista winning was a foregone conclusion. A bad, unnecessary conclusion, though.

I looked back in the thread and didn't see this brought up, so if I missed it I apologize and a mod can just delete it or something.

Call me crazy but I'm doubting that Batista hitting first was the real fuck up in the Rumble finish. I think it was that Batista wasn't supposed to hit the floor at all.

I could be wrong, this is just a theory, but for whatever it's worth my friends and I all ended up agreeing after going back and watching it again. Anyways, point number one is that Batista kinda took an extremely unsafe spill, especially having Cena on top of him like that. He basically backflipped over, which made it seem to me like it was the weight of Cena that caused him to fall. I think maybe Cena was supposed to fall out of the powerbomb and back into the ring on his feet, and maybe attempt another F-U before getting the spinebuster and thrown out like he did in the 2nd finish.

A few things I have to support this is that JR and Tazz sounded legitimately confused by the original end, and if you watch Batista he completely no-sold his bump and kinda had a "what the fuck" look on his face. Also, when Vince came out, it seemed rushed. It didn't really build up that much before he came out, and they didn't play his music. He also looked legitimately pissed off which is a sign that the finish may have went completely wrong, and that may also have led to him hitting his knee. If this was booked, I think Vince would have come out and maybe been calm about it and maybe award the #1 contenderships to both competitors rather than restarting the match.

I mean, either way the whole thing was screwy, but just a thought...

If that happened, Batista's push is probably over. Fucking up the finish, and then causing Vince to come out and embarass himself in front of millions is enough for Vince to go insane and like fire him or something.

Orton's pretty much done. The only way I think he can be saved if he does become the second Rock, which is what they were trying to do with him from the start. But in his fifteen-month push, he hasn't proven a thing.

Nah, I doubt that considering the on the fly booking did end up working pretty well and if this was the case that not many people noticed it. It ended up seeming like the traditional who was first finish in Rumbles and like the one with the RAW triple threat title match. I doubt they'll waste Batista now, I mean you can't deny that he's more over than any face on RAW right now.

If you watch again, they don't seem to communicate too well after the restart, seemingly not knowing exactly what to do. It could have been a botch. But they did the "eliminate each other and pose" thing as the argument went on, so maybe not. We'll find out soon.

The guy was getting it done towards the end of his heel run. Turning him face killed him.

He still has hope though. Send him to Smackdown and turn him heel just in time for Wrestlemania. Orton vs. Eddie

"At the end of the Royal Rumble match, after Batista and John Cena spilled out of the ring at the same time, Vince McMahon came down to ringside to give orders to the referees as to what to do with the match. As he got near the ring, he slammed into it and appeared to suffer a leg injury in the process. When he got in the ring and tried to get up, his right knee buckled and he immediately fell down, landing on his rear end. He then gave orders to the refs to restart the match, while sitting in the ring, which Batista won. Once he got to the back, he was attended to by the trainer and there was a big crowd of people around him. The initial prognosis was that he blew out his knee. We will update his condition when get more information."

Here's a link to download the awesome RR 2005 video package from tonight

When Batista/Cena both went out in the Rumble, I figured that they would just say that since both of them "won", and both are on different shows, both of them would be able to go on to WM. That would have made sense to me.

That's what I was thinking and hoping they would have done and keep the fans happy since both of their favorites won and then Vince made the f'n annoucement. I would have been just fine with the original outcome. Don't fix it if its not broken.

Besides, given the several month build of HHH-Batista against the several week build of JBL-Cena, Batista winning was a foregone conclusion. A bad, unnecessary conclusion, though.

I disagree. I feel Cena / JBL would be a better build-up. They're both complete opposites of each other character-wise. Cena could either interrupt one of JBL's victory speeches or JBL could just attack Cena and blame him for the downfall of the youth of America. Possible JBL could even cost Cena the US title at NWO to set up the feud or build up on it. Cena's been stuck in mid-card for 16 months and has been a good US Champion, is very well over, but has yet to win the big one. The heel WWE champion JBL has had such a long reign as it is. The story write itself.

Seeing as how all the RAW guys immediately declared Batista the winner and the Smackdown guys declared Cena the winner, I think it was planned as a tribute to 1994. Vince's blowing out his knee is what wasn't planned.

I'm suprised more people haven't mentioned the boos and "Randy sucks" chants that Orton was getting for most of the match, a la Steiner two years ago against the same opponent.

If this is the first Rumble without Patterson booking, at least it lays to rest those ideas that only Patterson knew how to book an exciting Rumble. I wouldn't say it was the best Rumble ever though, the final 5 mins or so let it down.

Actually Patterson was called in to help out according to BTR.

Watching the replay, I actually forgot how early Edge and Misterio came in, and also how long Eddie lasted (I recalled him going out earlier). Those three plus Benoit really carried this thing. Four ironmen is a good thing.

What i think really worked here about tonight's rumble was the fact it never slowed down. most rumbles have a slow down phase, tonight the ring was always full and there was alot of action constantly.

The Cena/Batista powerbomb-hitting-at-the-same-time near finish is a work, not a botch. You guys are looking far too much into that. If it was a botch, then it was one of the greatest botches in the history of wrestling considering how well everything went after it (minus the Vince blowing knee out thing). Now, it WOULD have been a botch if one of the guys obviously hit before the other. But, I couldn't tell who hit first even after watching it twice in real time.

I know why they both couldn't win the Royal Rumble..

"In the end there can be only 1 royal rumble winner......"

and Vince nailed his knee on the edge of the ring as he tried to slide in. Its a miracle more people haven't done that as many of them try to slide in the ring..

I was hoping London would slide out of the ring like he usually does in most matches. alas not tonight.

Poor guy. I hope for his bump tonight they give him the meaningless cw title reign. god knows funaki doesn't need it.

Okay, after watching it twice, I couldn't tell if the ending was planned or not. However, it seemed that Korderas and Robinson (SD refs) had no clue as to what to do when they both hit the floor. Jack Doan (Raw) declared Batista the winner by raising his hand, and right after, it appeared that Korderas was pointing to Cena and saying, "He hit first." I'm waiting to hear the inside scoop that will no doubt come in a couple days' time.

Also, here are the "Most Eliminations" list, ranked from most to least. There were three instances of a person getting eliminated by more than one person, as Holly was eliminated by Benoit and Guerrero; Hassan was eliminated by Reigns, Benoit, Jericho, Edge, Booker, and Benjamin; and Edge was eliminated by Batista and Cena. You can call them assists or 1/2 an elimination, depending on how you would personally score it. If you wanted to be technichal, the Hassan elimination could be counted as 1/6 an elimination instead of 1/2. For my list below, the 1/6th elimination was used for our "most Eliminations" bet at my apartment.

Batista 4 1/2

Edge 4 1/6

HBK 3

Cena 2 1/2

Eddy 2 1/2

Booker 2 1/6

Flair 2

Jericho 1 1/6

Holly 1

Rey 1

Snitsky 1

Kane 1

Benoit 2/3

Reigns 1/6

Shelton 1/6

Hassan took out Scotty 2 Hottie

Angle took out HBK

Also, the most in the ring at one time were 10. It was either when Haas came in at 16 or Dupree came in at 17. I forgot to write down which one.

My brother and I just rewatched it now and saw the same thing you did. The Smackdown refs went along with the decision that Batista won, but as soon as Cena started to get back in the ring suddenly Korderas shouts to Robinson to "Raise Cena's arm"
