Then again, there's lots of homophobia for most visible minorities because they come from different cultures, much like how a lot of old school white people disown their kids if they find out they're gay. In certain countries, it's a culturally acceptable practice to just beat up or mug someone if they're gay, and that's just wrong. Scary enough, I know some people who actually seem to say this with a matter of pride.

Besides which, there are many posters who deserve to get banned more than Mike. But the guy was so mean and condescending to anyone who disagreed with him, how can you not laugh at him now?

Because this is a board for discussing politics. Politics gets heated. People feel pationate about their views and argument and confrontation is expected. If you can't take the heat GET OUT OF THE FOLDER! That's why I have such a problem with this banning, is that the majority of CE "regulars" (from both sides of the spectrum) don't think Mike should have been banned and acknoledge what he brings to the table. It seems like it's the forum members who like to frequent NHB and rarely enter into CE that want to see him go because they didn't get his style, tried flaming him and didn't like it when he flamed them back. I know this isn't a democracy, but I wish bannings were a little more justified and not just "because the mods felt like it", way too much like a certain dictatorship from a country in Europe led by a guy with a famous mustache...

I didn't want to see Mike go, either. I enjyed reading his posts and I thought when he wasn't calling people "twatrocks" or making ridiculous generalizations about "the left" he really added a lot to the discussions around here. But you have to admit, most of the time, he wasn't a very nice guy here. And I, for one, believe that TSM needs more nice guys. Nice use of the Nazi comparison. I know you didn't mean it literally, but that didn't stop anyone from jumping my ass for 3 days the only time I ever did it.

 

Mike was a stubborn jackass who couldn't back down even after he was proven wrong, which people have done to him on multiple occasions. I'm not saying he was wrong 100% of the time, but if anyone was bringing this folder down, it was him. He didn't offer any interesting perspectives, just the same Republican Party propaganda you get from the talking heads on TV.

 

I'm sick of you guys defending him, and then acting like his personal security force anytime someone attacks him back. This folder will be a lot better without his stupid ass flaming people for three days when they have the nerve to point out one of his many, many factual inaccuracies. He started more pointless flame-wars here than anyone else.

 

He couldn't follow the rules, so fuck him.

I listened to a Howard Dean speech in front of the Minnesota ACLU and it was fascinating. I recommend it:

I truly think that the Democrats who dislike Dean do so not for his politics and beliefs, but simply for his personality and the way the media spun him during his Presidential run.

 

If you don't want to listen to it, he went over some of the following:

 

--Democrats are losing the abortion debate because of the way the debate is framed. As soon as the argument becomes whether debate is wrong versus whether it is right, pro-life versus pro-abortion, the Democrats will always lose because no one will support abortion itself.

--He didn't criticize Senators passing the Patriot Act because of national climate, but it's clearly time after the fact to end it.

--He said it is important for Democrats to run for every kind of local office, no matter what it is. Told a story about how recently he campaigned for a Democrat running for library trustee. Someone went up to him and asked him what he was doing as a former Presidential candidate supporting this. He said because it was important to have people running libraries who would read books, not burn them.

--He said the most important demographic for the Democrats are the people who are of the lower class who will gain nothing from the Republicans economically, but are simply scared that they'll lose raising their kids. It's not just about abortion, gay marriage, or just morals-it's about fear. They feel as if they've already lost their economic situation, so raising their kids is all they have left and so they'll follow the Republicans' social agenda. He says that Dems need to stop laughing at these type of people with moral convictions, like so many do, but respect and empathize with them instead.

--Too many people think losing is worse than winning without principles.

--Applauds people who get their news from the Daily Show and the internet. Says it's a great development that the internet is taking away from the cable channels what the cable channels took away from the networks in terms of where to get information. Says our educational system is essential in getting people to determine whether what we see on the internet is credible or not.

--Democrats need to show up in every state, on a local or national level, in the North AND the South.

BTW, on the fund raising topic, Dean was at a significant disadvantage during Q1 since the Schiavo mess was on the forefront of the political forum. Let's face it, the Republicans had a hot button issue on their table to galvanize their base into giving money. The Democrats had an issue that was of lukewarm importance and DeLay. That's not nearly as motivating an issue. He was lucky to get as much as he did.

Keep in mind, Dean was DNC chair for only a few weeks of the first quarter.

But because you directly and crudely insulted me instead of arguing the merits of the banning I was a little chapped about it and just said "screw it".
