Vern Gagne Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 Does anyone know why TCM is allowed to air unedited versions of movies? They include everything full frontal nudity, and all curse words.
bob_barron Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 It's cable- they can do whatever they want
starvenger Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 It's cable- they can do whatever they want However, most channels are too wimpy to take advantage of this. Allowing swearing (Playmakers) seems about as far as they'll go. However, there's a rumour that A&E will show uncut eps of The Sopranos during it's late night viewing, but we'll see how that ends up...
2GOLD Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 Comedy Central has started taking advantage of this with the hardcore curse words on Saturday Night Stash. And the movies with the nudity only come on late at night, usually past 10 pm anyway. Plus what are the odds any kids are watching TCM? Do young children curl up in front of the television for Clark Gable movies?
godthedog Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 i imagine TCM has a highbrow-enough status to get away with it, since 1) it's pretty obvious the intentions aren't pornographic or distasteful and 2) kids don't watch it anyway. similarly, i remember seeing an unedited version of 'stand and deliver' on public television one night many years ago. nothing beats a fat, short edward james olmos with a combover saying "i'm gonna kick the shit out of you."
DMann2003 Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 Just as long as TCM never goes the way of AMC- They show the harder stuff usually in the middle of the night (12AM-6AM), last night they showed JFK uneditied at like 1 in the morning (This is the best month on TCM, 31 Days of Oscar). I love Turner Classic Movies.
Guest El Satanico Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 The only thing that keeps Cable in check are advertisers TCM has very little commercial time, which means they can do whatever the fuck they want. TCM only shows commercials between movies and I believe that also keeps them off their back. Maybe TCM only signs advertisers that don't have a problem with what they do.
cabbageboy Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Hell, it's TED FUCKING TURNER, he can air what he wants in whatever form he wants (thankfully not colorized anymore). Actually I do recall TCM having cuss words and stuff edited out, but that's when they used to not show many newer movies (as in post 1970 or so). But now they show a lot of R rated stuff and it's kinda fraudulent to say "We show stuff uncut and uninterrupted" if they actually CUT the film. TCM is actually quite different from when I first got it 10 years ago. Not as radically different as AMC (a station I now detest and refuse to watch), but they have subtly changed their lineup over time. Now they show stuff like Jaws at 8:00, safe programming that'll get ratings. Thing is, TCM doesn't really get any ratings per se. What happened to the days of having a Wheeler and Woolsey marathon in prime time? The world demands creaky RKO early talkies!
Guest JMA Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 I was surprised to see that TCM showed Deliverance uncut. VERY surprised.
MarvinisaLunatic Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 FOX Movie channel airs uncut stuff too.
nl5xsk1 Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 /disapointed that this wasn't a thread about TX Chainsaw Massacre
TheBigSwigg Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Hell, it's TED FUCKING TURNER Actually, it's TIME FUCKING WARNER. Ted Turner has no control over what used to be his "empire."
Slayer Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 I used to hate TCM as a teenager, if only for the fact that we only had one cable TV in our house and my dad watched it a lot, which would in turn prevent me from watching anything I wanted to. Now that I'm (mostly) on my own though, I find some good stuff on it now and then
cabbageboy Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Well Turner used to back when the channel started, didn't he? Perhaps he had the hard on for creaky early talkie stuff.
The Czech Republic Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 My dad hates AMC for adding like a million commercial breaks and dumb superimposed graphics for what's coming up next to his old movies. They also seem to show fewer movies, and more "movie-oriented programming." Gotta get AMC to appeal to that primo 18-34 demographic, you know.
Guest Failed Mascot Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Right now they're airing everything uncut due to some Oscar promotion. All Oscar caliber films uncut and commercial free until I believe March 3rd or 4th.
