Then again, I don't remember you having an economics degree... or a history degree... or any degree that gives you authority on the subject matter.

OMG, I'd better not disparage a current box-office hit, since I don't have a film degree! And I'd better not offer thoughts about the NHL labor dispute, since I don't have a sports management degree. And I'd better not say I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, since I clealry don't have a Hospitality Management degree, or whatever hippie degree you need to run a hotel.

 

What I do have, though, is common sense. And common sense tells me that unions have been a very destructive force in the American workplace. Have they done good? Yes, unquestionably. But they've also done a lot of harm, And in my opinion, the bad has outweighed the good for some time now.

 

Oh, by the way, I can write that because I have an English degree. Maybe you need a degree in Not Being Six Days Late Making a Reply. :P

Well, we could point to the rapidly dwindling percentage of union employees as evidence that WORKERS don't much care for what they offer.

Or we could point to the almost entirely conservative makeup of the NLRB and the extremely unfriendly (pro-employer, anti-employee) climate for unions that this has created as the reason for this decrease.

Unions are still by far the best way for working people to win some semblance of economic security and to have a say in the terms of their employment. Union members make 25 percent more in wages than workers who don’t have a union. Women and black workers with a union make 30 percent more, and Latino union workers make 45 percent more. Union members are considerably more likely to have a defined-benefit pension plan and health care than workers without unions. Unions also curb discrimination on the job, push for workplace safety and give workers a much-needed collective voice.

My ass. Explain then how one has to know (be related to) someone already employed at say, the local GM or Dana (UAW) mfg. plants to even have a prayer? The statement that a union makes the available positions very coveted is true, which also means they're harder to get, and are more subject to the nepotistic crap like I'm talking about.

Hardly. Speaking for MY industry, we know that the CWA has LOST about 80% of the attempts it made to unionize other wireless telecom industries. In fact, they REGULARLY have lost votes to KICK THEM OUT of shops.

 

It's not the NLRB that has made unions useless. It is unions that have made unions useless.

 

Companies want to hire the best employees. Unions provide nothing for employees with any modicum of talent.

In my company specifically, I can guarantee you that our few union employees have considerably worse deals than even I have.

 

I get a yearly bonus. They do not.

 

I get raises more frequently.

Bullshit. The one unionized shop in my company called an ILLEGAL strike and then made veiled death threats against anybody who crossed the picket line.

 

As my company pointed out to them --- they had the right to FIRE every single person who went out on the illegal strike. They opted not to.

 

Again, unions don't do shit for an employee with talent or ability. If you're a talentless slug, then yeah, a union is your only hope to get paid better than your actual talent level warrants.

Anecdotes are cool and all. But I can't argue with your own personal experiences, AoO and MikeSC. If that's what you guys have seen, then you're probably gonna feel that way.

 

The statistics show that unions help workers--better pay and better benefits on average. The World Bank even said so, and they're hardly left-wing. I'm not saying that they don't definitely have their warts, though.

I'd like to see if this includes such unions as the Screen Actor's Guild and the like that would ridiculously skew the numbers.
