He did have that stretch where he did "Enemy of the State" and "Legend of Bagger Vance" though.

 

Course "Hitch" probably nailed the dating crowds very hard since it's Valentine's Day weekend and if the couples want to catch a movie, this one holds up better than the "I need to buy an male escort then fall in love with him" Wedding Date.

 

Hitch should hold up well, Constantine should do decent and might get to 16 million. I'll be going to see it, that's for sure but lots of the fans of the comic aren't going.

Has any of Smith's movie not really drawn? Except Bagger Vance....I can't think of any other movie's smith had that wasn't a success BO wise. I say he's up there with Cruise, Hanks and Gibson for surefire BO success level.

Enemy made money, it made a profit so it wasn't a bomb or a disapointment. It wasn't a Monster hit but it made a profit and thats all that matters.

The trailers make Constantine look like a good movie and it's the only recent movie for the action crowd, so I doubt the fans of the comic not seeing it will affect the box office too much.

Good to see Will Smith continue his successful streak. I tried to go see "Hitch" last night, but it was completely sold out. Hopefully i'll get to see it at some point this week.

I think the better question is why do these Carrey movies get sequels WITHOUT Carrey even being in them? I swear I heard about 10 years ago that Carrey was going to be in the Mask sequel, but obviously not.

 

Enemy of the State I think finished #15 at the box office in 1998. Not too bad really.

I think Carrey has said that he never wants to do a sequel. And yes, I know he did Ace Ventura 2, but I'm pretty sure he was contractually obligated to do that one, and couldn't get out of it.

I really want to like Constantine...and then I see the trailers....and everything works...except for Keanu Reeves badly delivering lines left and right.

I say that exact same thing about many of his movies. He seems to always pick movies that look or sound interesting. "Great another potentially good movie ruined by Keanu" is uttered often by me during trailers.

 

I have no problem with him in Matrix...his "acting" style fit his character, so it worked.

At first I thought Jamie Kennedy was playing the old role, and that the dog was supposed to be the same...

 

It seems to me that they had wanted Carrey to come back for this one (was rumored to at one point), but he didn't want to (doesn't want to do sequels anymore) so they basically changed the names, recast people, and thus we have this movie.

 

So, *currently* there is no direct relationship between this and the original movie other than the mask itself.

Ice Cube actually does damn well at the box office. Take away "Ghost of Mars" and "Torque" and I think Ice has had a very impressive run.

Torque: 24 million, cost 40 (seriously, did anyone think it WOULD make money?)

Friday after Next: 32 million, cost 20 million

I'm not sure about the theater numbers, but I'm hearing absolutely great word of mouth about the film. Apparently, the story isn't much to write home about (but that's true for most low-budget martial arts flicks), but the action is supposed to be off-the-wall and a throwback to some of the great martial arts films of times past. I've seen Tony Jaa being compared by some to Bruce Lee, not in the sense of saying Jaa is on that level, but in that he's breathtaking to watch and is more "real" than what we're used to seeing these days, where filmmakers seem to feel that every kung-fu (or in this case, Muay Thai) flick made needs to have guys flying around on wires.

 

I'm definitely going to try and catch it in the next couple weeks.

The things I don't like about Will Smith is that when he appears in lousy movies he contributes a lot towards making them huge successes, and usually he's just playing the same damn character he always has.

 

So, basically I dislike him for the same reason movie execs like him--he can draw in the crowds despite whatever tripe he appears in.

 

For the record, I liked the MIBs, WWW was kind of lame but the presence of Smith had nothing to do with it--he was "on" in that was one as far as I'm concerned. However, it's your Bad Boys, Independence Days and I, Robots that piss me off.

 

So I find him tolerable depending on the movie/role, but I can't stand his music.
