The OAO SmackDown!'s No Way Out Thread

Cena/Angle was Cena's best match in a long while. In at least a year, I'd say.

Well in the past year he has been on and off US Champ and really since November he has been in one squash match after another.

Paul London didn't look great. He looked like a mix between the Ultimate Warrior and Marty Jannetty.

It'll get him noticed more than when he tries to kill himself with a crazy spot.

"This dude looks like a gimpy hybrid of Ultimate Warrior and Texas Tornado." -- one of my casual fan friends we watch PPV with. He still doesn't know London's name. He just calls him "the guy Snitsky killed at the Rumble".

I really need a picture of the Ultimate London.

Shouldn't that be the Ultimate Jannety?

I really enjoyed No Way Out, you gotta admit. it was MUCH better than New Year's Revolution

I disagree.

This was probably the worst WWE PPV I've ever seen.

Match for match, NYRev was better.

Plus, the poolside stuff with Christy was far better executed than the rookie Diva contest.

I thought both the pool and the Diva Search were both equally trash, but I ain't counting those.

NYR's Mid-card matches completly sucked. NWO had a damn good Tag Team Title match, an entertaining Cruiserweight Match, another damn good Angle/Cena match, a decent Taker/Reigns Match and a better-than-expected Booker/Heidy match, and while I did enjoy both the E.Chamber and Cage Match. the E.Chamber match left a bad taste in my mouth with Triple H winning the title. I knew JBL was going to win and I enjoyed the ending. plus the very end with the whole JBL/Cena Batista thing I enjoyed.

They've taken this whole 'JBL is a lucky champion' deal WAY too far now. This was the equivalent of Angle at Armageddon (HIAC).

As much as JBL is an unsuitable WWE Champ (even though I can't help liking the guy's character and think he's improved noticeably in-ring), you can't blame ALL of the bad points of his title reign on him. He's had ZERO clean wins since winning the title and only retains the belt by interference or, last night, through sheer luck.

Doesn't matter if you're Bradshaw or Benoit- If you're booked as a joke champion, you don't stand a chance. Blame JBL all you want, but he's been booked out of whatever credibility he may have had.

Tag Title Match- NWO wins.

Taker or Lawler- NWO wins.

Diva crap- NYR wins.

Heidenreich or Snitsky- NWO wins.

IC Title/Cruiser Title- NWO wins.

#1 Contender Final/1st half of EC- NWO wins.

2nd half of EC/HV Title- NYR wins.

It was a poor effort, but hardly the worst WWE PPV since the brand extension. Granted, on paper it was terrible, but Angle vs Cena was great, and JBL vs Big Show was as good as it was gonna be (at least they tried for a somewhat-original finish).

Personally, I never take much notice of what a wrestler wears, but Paul London looked awful tonight. His old white 'Strike Force' attire was fine.

Turth is the non-smart wrestling fan or the casual fan doesn't know that he hasn't had a clean win since his regin started and they probably won't care. Unless they really hate him and have been keeping up with his win/loss record, which would be a tad creepy. I would compare it to the Honkey Tonk Man IC title regin but since the annoucers don't really admit that he hasn't won any title defense clean, I can really compare it to that.

I'm sure casual fans realise JBL always has help to win. The World Champion should ALWAYS look like a legitimate threat at some point during their reign. JBL looks nothing like a legitimate threat. Because he won the title thanks to Angle, retained thanks to the Cabinet and/or Heidenreich time and time again and then, finally, when he got put in a match with no help available...he won by accident.

Now, you don't have to have access to the internet and be a smart fan to realise JBL won by accident. JBL has zero credibility anymore. He is, to casual and to smart fans, a joke.

As Anglesault always used to point out, no World Champion should EVER have a Honkey Tonk reign...because once the belt is gone, the former champ is dead and buried.

I'll probably be reiterating earlier points with some of this, but here's my take on last nights lacklustre PPV:

- Eddie/Rey vs. Bashams really surprised me with both the result and with how solid an opener it was. I'm pretty sure that was the Bashams best match to date, they looked a lot better than they have previously to me. Everyone had their working boots on, and the whole thing rattled along at a nice pace. Well booked finish too. **1/2

- Heidenreich vs. Booker totally killed the crowd after the opener. If you had the misfortune of seeing any of the Cena/Booker matches over the US title, you may (or may not) be surprised that this was worse than the lot of them. Lots of botching, slow, plodding match. 1/4* for Heidenreich's facials, which were pretty funny.

- The CW match wasn't awful like Heidy/Booker, but had its problems too. I'm a big London mark, but his ring gear last night looked awful, and didn't suit him at all. It sounds daft, but it really took away from his whole 'heroic effort' bit in the match, because it just looked so...not Paul London. Given that NWO seems to be the start of a push for London, it baffles me that he'd have thought "I know, I'll wear my silly outfit tonight." Also, I don't want London to be killing himself but it seems odd, given his role in the match, that he didn't do a single 'holy shit' bump. Obviously, the lack of time meant that everything looked rushed and guys got pinned in no time at all, making them look like shit. The only real big positives were that London should be getting a one on one title shot, and that he never pinned Akio, which will hopefully lead to a continuation of therir rivalry down the road. And the first WWE Dragon Suplex in I don't know how long. *1/2

- The whole divas thing was as expected. Michelle actually looks like she might be able to do something in the ring, so of course the other one who wiggles her arse about won.

- Reigns/Taker was the usual Taker match, like the Heidenreich ones before it. Not as offensive as the earlier match as it wasn't actually uncomfortable to watch, just predictable and slow. Crowd still disinterested. *

- Angle/Cena was done to a tee. Both men played to their strong points, especially with Cena selling the leg like a champ. I really enjoyed the matwork at the start as it looked like Cena was really struggling to stay alive on the floor with Angle, but just couldn't hack it. The drama towards the end was great, with Cena toughing out the laying anklelock after Angle viciously pounded away at Cena's leg following the FU nearfall (which despite looking so weak, has been built up to such a degree that I really did think that might be it). Cena going over clean with no run-in (thank god) was exactly what was needed from this match. ***

- JBL/Show was bad, outside of two nice bladejobs (I always think JBL's look great), and at least they stuck to the promise of (almost) no outside interference and came up with an original finish. I wasn't expecting much, but my main gripes with the match were:

i) especially after JBL's promo, I felt that this was the chance to have JBL get a big pinfall victory to show that despite his cowardice, when his back is to the wall he really can get the job done by himself. They didn't, and at the end of the day I feel that this is only going to cheapen what I assume will be Cena's big title win at Mania.

ii) If you're going to virtually base a PPV around the fact that a cage has barbed wire on it, it would be nice to actually use it. And if you're going to say that you can't escape through the door, don't let people escape throught the door! *1/2

I rest safe in the knowledge that I didn't pay a penny to watch this PPV.

Maybe that's why I had trouble going to sleep last night.

can someone dress the cruiserweights better, or at least Shannon and Paul? What the hell was London wearing? Who let Shannon near the red eyeliner?

Moore and London look awesome. Something different from whatever OVW muscle freak they bring in. It's Moore's idea to dress the way he does, he likes the make-up.

"different" shouldn't automatically mean "tacky"

Bunch of bland matches with predictable finishes. Guerrero and Mysterio are wasted in a dead division. Nobody cares about 80% of the roster, and having everyone job to Taker doesn't help. Cage match ended creatively, but was obvious after the chokeslam. No emphasis on the barb wire, outside of JBL ridiculously attempting to climb it. JBL taking two big bumps reduced the impact of each. Only wrestler-specific chants were RVD, HBK and Batista which is hugely telling. Cruiserweight match was everything that is wrong with that division, from quick falls, to uninspired offense and anti-climatic finish. Diva stuff was rightly shit on and ran way too long. Mania is looking a long way from complete.

Anyone have screencaps?

Anyone looking for screencaps of No Way Out . . . there's a kickass site from the UK that does literally thousands of screencaps for each show.

Here's a link to the No Way Out caps, scroll down through the page to see sections with each match.

They've also got caps from a lot of previous shows as well . . . . just check it out, I was pretty damned impressed.

I still want a picture of London's "outfit".

Here you go.

Why, that Paul London dresses oddly, and acts somewhat crazy! I think I shall cheer for him. Yay.

I think I just toasted a load over Londons new boots.

He NEEEEEEEEEDS to start using the claw hold and the tornado punch.

And he needs to come down to the Ultimate Warriors music (seriously, c'mon, they have it and they're not using it... and it's awesome.)

... and needs to be managed by Jimmy Hart.

"Yeah baby yeah! Go get em baby! That's the way!"

And he needs a nickname. Like "LONE STAR". That's it. He's officially named "LONE STAR" Paul London. Say it with me now...
