Spots that should've been the finish...

Recommended Posts

Guest Mindless_Aggression

By this, I mean any spot within a match that was built up to, had perfect timing popped the crowd like mad and made perfect sense as the finish...only to get a 2 count which effectively kills the mood of the crowd and everyone watching at home.

I thought of this because while adding labels to some of my tapes, I came across the Flair/Taker match from WM. Arn Anderson slides in and just spinebusters the fuck out of Taker and the arena explodes. Great timing on it too. And yet it still only gets 2. I know Taker has the whole undefeated crap going at Wrestlemania, but I think that would have been the best finish for it all.

I mean Taker essentially made Flair's life a living hell just to make him accept the match, then pretty much beats his ass for 20 minutes, kicks out of everything, then anticlimatically tombstones him for the win. It just didn't serve the story for him to go over in such a dominating manner, and the Anderson spot would've been the best way for Flair to go over. He got a lot of help, but he hung on long enough to get the win, while at the same time Taker can say he got screwed. Ah well, tombstones for everyone in the end.

Well what do you think?

The Rock vs. Chris Jericho from No Mercy

this is in my top five matches from 2001 and i loved every minute of it, EXCEPT that i think Jericho should have won when he got The Rock in the Walls right before Steph came out, that would have been the peeeeeerfect finish for the match. It always kinda pisses me off that they went for like a minute more and ended with the move on the chair.

Nah, for No Mercy, the finish was perfect. That was the whole reason behind the heel turn was that he couldn't beat Rocky clean. However, after cheating his way to the undisputed title, and with his credibility faltering, it would have been great if Rock had tapped out when he was in the Walls at the Royal Rumble.

Not quite a crowd killer, but at Vengeance '03 the crowd chanted "bullshit" after a two count following Rey's top rope alleyoop 'rana on Haas.

Regal and Eugene winning the belts at the UK Raw, that got a monster reaction and then turned the crowd hostile for the rest of the night once they got screwed out of it, I mean they did it with Taijiri adn Regal so why not here???

Jericho ducking the Superkick and putting Michaels in the Walls at Wrestlemania a couple of years back, that really should of been the finish right there

Of course I do. The point of the match was to turn Jericho heel. And for a change, they actually did it an interesting way that made sense by having him hesitatingly cheat when he couldn't pin Super-Rock clean. If you think about it, the character evolution was pretty much the same as for the Austin heel turn, and when people were raving aout the match afterward, it was mainly due to the finish.

It was only when Rock hammered on how cheap it was every Raw and Smackdown for a month, started pinning Jericho with DDTs, and basically did everything he could to make Jericho look like a jobber, that the finish started to look bad.

The finish to Rock v Jericho at NM was horrible beyond belief. The fans were dying to accept Jericho as a top guy, and after his LMS with Hunter back in July not being followed up on, this was about the last real chance for them to view Jericho as a top guy. The fans in the building were on the edge of their seat, clamoring for Jericho to win cleanly and have their faith in him vindicated. If The Rock had tapped out clean in the middle, which is what that entire arena wanted, they would have blown the roof off of the place, because that is the only finish they wanted. The match was MOTY-level as well. Instead, we got a screwjob finish, and the fans were told once and for all that Jericho can't win the big one on his own, and that's when all faith in him as being a top guy was lost. I seriously don't know how anyone with a brain can think that finish was in any way acceptable.

Jericho really should have won that match. Personally, I was hoping for an entirely different finish: that Jericho would have levelled Shawn with his superkick and renamed it like he did Malenko's cloverleaf and proceeded to murder folks with it.

Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Yes, Jericho should have won with the Walls at that instance. He would've gotten a huge boost off the win and the walls could have been seen as an actual finish again, as opposed to the hold everyone gets out of nowadays.

Another one that strikes me was from a match in the mid-90s. I can't remember what event, it was either the Summerslam with the Boiler Room Brawl or it was the Wrestlemania where Taker defeated Sid. Either way, Wildman Marc Mero was having a match. He headed up top and nailed one of the most beautiful shooting star presses I've ever seen... only to get 2. Mero won anyway... and I still have NO CLUE why the SSP didn't win it.

Jericho faced HHH in a LMS in July 2000.

Jericho faced Rock at NM in 2001.

July is true, but it makes no sense considering that was over a year after.

Yeah, the LMS was in July 2000, but that doesn't stop the NM 2001 match being the last chance for them to pull the trigger on Jericho being taken seriously as top guy, nor the fact that the finish was beyond horrible.

I believe you're referring to SummerSlam 1996 where Mero debuted "The Wild Thing" on Goldust. However, Goldust would go on to hit the Curtain Call on Mero and pin him.

Which makes even LESS sense.

The German superplex Kid Kash gave to The Amazing Red in their first encounter back in early '03 in TNA. Red did two complete flips and still landed practically on his head...but he kept fighting, hit the Red Star Press and the 718, and also hit the Code Red (he hit it right after taking the German, too), and missed a somersault plancha before getting hit with Kash's double underhook piledriver (I alway forget if it's called the Kash Driver or the Money In The Bank).

Austin-Rock WM X7

Rock kicked out about 2 times too many. By the time it was over, the fans were stunned instead of yelling.

And for HIAC Bad Blood 04. Like 5 minutes earlier. Way too many false finishes. I know everyone here says it was a snorefest, but if they didnt prolonge the finish so much, it would have came off way better.

I dunno, I liked the way that match ended. The stunner didn't work, the chairshot didn't work; so Autin hit him with a chair about 30 times.

Genius.

I hated the Mania 17 finish at first, but it grew on me. And I love it now...they needed to do something totally overblown, in my opinion. And Austin totally flipping out until he finally just kills the Rock is great stuff.

Hogan/Rock, leg drop at Mania 18 is definately one to think about...

HIAC Bad Blood 2004 would of been good with at least 10 minutes cut off of it. At about the 20-25 minute mark I was just totally unintrested.

HHH hitting Taker with the Sledgehammer during the Last Ride spot at WrestleMania X7.

I think this was the last time I was rooting for Undertaker to win.

Oh, easy.

Rock and Eddie Guerro in a raw match. If Eddie wins, he gets a shot at the title on Smackdown. Rock goes for the rock bottom and eddie pulls of a gourgeous reversal and roll up that should have ended the match and have him job to Rock on Smackdown.

Me, too! I used to like the UT and really bought into the storyline of UT's Wrestlemania streak. Fun match, actually!

I've since stopped caring about UT.
