The Future of Food.......

Recommended Posts

Guest MikeSC

Genetically modified food allows us to feed far more people than we previously could.

It is a good thing --- not a bad.

Penn & Teller did a great episode on this kind of hysteria on "Bullshit"

If you eat food, you need to see The Future of Food...

So I guess only PETA and supermodels don't have to see this film?

I seriously want to find out from people what they think the general state of human health was back when the only things to eat were "all natural" home grown fruits, vegetables, and grain products.

Nowadays we have our "unnatural" modern medicine and agricultural methods, and FOR SOME REASON people seem to live longer.

Moore will be all for it if they develop a cheeseburger bush. Oh ho ho.

I've never heard a reasonable argument as to why this stuff is in any way bad, besides reactionary panic. And if they ever do get that square tomato out, Wendy's burgers will look awesome!

Have you seen the size of breasts now?!?!?

Why would any straight man want to get rid of genetically enhanced food then?

Damn breast hating hippies.

I've never heard a reasonable argument as to why this stuff is in any way bad, besides reactionary panic.

The main arguments I've heard against it are this:

If a genetically modified food (like, corn) gets out into the wilderness, it's possible that, since it was most probably genetically engineered to be more hardy, it would replace all other forms of corn. And, if it was engineered to fend off certain insects, well, those bugs are all gonna starve.

Further, it's *possible* that mixing around certain genes could be problematic to people with allergies. Like, if they used genes from peanuts in apples for some reason, then someone allergic to peanuts could possibly now be allergic to that kind of apple.

I'm still undecided on the stuff, myself. I think it'd be nice if they still grew and sold all-natural foods though, just because it would calm some people down.

It's not often that I agree with you but you completely took the words out of my mouth on this one.

Damn breast hating hippies.

I also think that this food has started the white women with ass movement, that I am all for.

My thoughts exactly. Long live genetically enhanced food!

I got extremely sick the one time I ate soy.

So you had the natural reaction to that garbage.

Better off going outside and grazing like a cow than eating soy.

The only real battle being currently fought in the US is trying to force companies to label their food as GM like they do in other parts of the world.

I would say one problem that is real, and a danger to our health is the fact that we don't know yet how mixing genes and chromosones from different items will start to interact over time. I think they are using genes from flounder fish in tomatoes now because it makes the tomatoes fight the cold weather better, which I am not necessarily sure is a bad thing anyway, but I am interested to hear the other side of the argument for piece of mind.

Also, Corporate farming is putting patents on SEEDS, which means when the seeds from their field travel via wind onto someone elses farm, and their crops naturally mix, the corporations are bringing lawsuits against the farmer and forcing them to shut down. That is not a health issue, but is one fucked up thing to do.

I have seen the Penn & Teller episode on GM foods and why they think it is "Bullshit" but at the same time, they seemed more interested in finding the dumbest and youngest fools in the entire march to go after and make look stupid, which is a rather simply tactic to make your own argument look stronger.

Not all issues against GM food are health-related, it has a lot to do with corporate farming in general.

I have heard a lot of the "who cares, leave GM farming alone, it is fantastic" viewpoint, so I think the other side of the coin deserves to be looked at.

:)

I dunno about that. If you could point me to some article that GM food is necessary to feed the people of the world, and that without GM food, we couldn't possibly do it that would be nice, but we also have items such as corn being grown in excess, not in order to "feed the world" but to break it down into high fructose corn syrup.

A lot of the corporate farms that are being taken to outside countries are forcing foreign farmers that villages relied on to be fed to shut down, and who is to say where that food is going in terms of feeding the locals, where as before with the village farmers it was going directly back to the community.

Again, I am not stating as a fact that this surplus in GM is not being put to some good use, but I don't buy the notion that "oh without GM food we couldn't feed the world" for a second.

Well, it should be better than that anti-meat documentary Alec "I Lost all My Integrity as an actor after being in the "Cat in the Hat Movie" That Raped everyones Childhood, and made lovecraft231 lose even more faith in humanity" Baldwin was going to do called "The Meat You Eat"

You guys can hate on soy all you want, but it's a good, cheap, efficient source of protein and could be a key component in improving nutrition worldwide.

Maybe so.

Still tastes like a dog's ass.

But hey, if you LIKE the taste of dog ass, more power to you.

Soy chocolate milk tastes fairly decent. The rest of th stuff is no good, except maybe in a shake, but the chocolate soy milk is fine.

No way in hell could humanity ever adapt to consuming food in pills rather than actual eating. I don't think it's possible.
