Panthers release Muhammad

The Carolina Panthers have released wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports.

 

The team had until Wednesday to make a decision about Muhammad, who would have been owed a $10 million bonus.

 

Muhammad caught 93 passes for 1,405 yards and 16 touchdowns this season, his best by far since he joined Carolina in 1996 out of Michigan State.

 

not surprised by this as its been talked about the last few weeks. i can think of a few teams that may try and get him. he proved last year that he can still be a #1 WR if given the chance

The Eagles were trying to recruit him at the Pro Bowl a few weeks ago, so there's a possible destination.

I wouldn't at all be surprised to see Joe Gibbs go after him. He's that big-tough wideout that Gibbs loves having. A combo of him and Moss would be very potent and take pressure off of Portis.

Washington would have a tough time convincing him to go there and not Philly. Unless Washington offers him a much larger contract, I can't see it happening.

Nothing wrong with the system. The players get most of the money from the signing bonuses, if they have a good season they get some more money from incentives. Its not like Muhammad is on the same level as Torry Holt or Issiac Bruce.....more like Peerless Price type of player.

Yeah, the Panthers are fine at WR as long as no one goes down to injury. Muhammad is a good WR, but he's aging and not exactly worth $10 million. How many receivers are?

Bad move IMO. Instead of getting a WR, they should have gone for a QB and then looked to the draft for a WR. Unless they planned for Muhammad to teach the rookie WR the ropes if the Bears actually did draft one in the first or second round.

There's a glut of backup QBs on the market, I imagine they can still get a Jay Fiedler type without spending too much. The Bears passing offense was terrible last year, they're going to need more than just a rookie WR to help them out. Their O-line needs to be improved, and they could still use some more help at WR (Justin Gage isn't the answer). So they could still draft one of the best WRs (Edwards/Williams) and then look for O-line help elsewhere.

They get their signing bonus guaranteed. That means they could play one game and get injured and still get the say $4 million bonus they signed and it also allows NFL teams to not get too horribly bloated by bad guaranteed contracts like the NBA.

The Bears have a good young QB, he was just injured last season. Rex Grossman is going to pan out to be an above average QB. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the Bears draft Ronnie Brown now since Lovie Smith likes the smash-mouth style and could run both Jones and Brown down people's throats while Muhammad and one other WR holds the defense honest.

I agree for the most part -- especially when a NFL player holds out for more money. Now it's true that they get all of their signing bonus, but isn't the point of a contract to, you know, say "so-and-so will play for us for a number of years and in turn we'll pay them this amount of money..."?

i'm not sure where else they need help but adding Edwards from Michigan will add another great target for Grossman and they could get rid of Terrell. for a team thats looking to add to there passing game you can't pass up Edwards imo

I'd be a little hesitant taking another Michigan WR in the first round. David Terrell was great in college too.

 

Besides, don't the Bears already have two young WRs they're high on? If so, then picking up someone like Muhammad, instead of drafting a WR high, makes more sense.

Justin Gage disappointed last season I believe, and who's the other receiver? Because David Terrell has been disappointing since 2000, so it isn't him.

What a bad, bad move. $12 Million guaranteed for a 32 year old WR. In the 3 years prior to this one, he had 167 catches, 2245 yds & 7 TD's. His average was 56 catches for 784 yds and 2 TD's over those 3 years, whilst servicable, they do not deserve a $12 million guaranteed contract. His production will never get close to this years total again, and will be gone in 3 years or less from the Bears. They may have set themselves on the path to salary cap hell if they make more bad signings like this one.

That's what I thought immediately, until I realized that the Chicago Bears haven't had a marquee player at a skills position since Walter Payton. They're clearly a rebuilding team anyway, and an O-line is something that can be built on the cheap with good scouting and some sense. The bears have NOTHING on offense. Jones is not the answer at RB, and Grossman needs SOMETHING to throw at. I think he'll be a worthy acquisition.

 

Seriously, this team, minus a couple bodies, had a defense that propelled them to a damn good season a few years back. It's still there, and the coaching has only improved. With a couple more offensive pickups, the bears will actually matter. Mark my words. Especially in that division. Favre's about done, Minnesota just lost their biggest weapon and is poorly coached, the Lions are chronic underachievers....I don't think a chicago bears playoff berth is out of the question, honestly.

I hope you are right. However I just don't see them doing it this year. Maybe next, but there's just too many holes right now (HB... like you said, a failed Cardinals/Buccaneers back is not the answer, WR, a few spots on the defense). I think it would take two good drafts (this year and next), good offseason moves and then the Bears would roll.

Perfect opportunity for another player to make a big step-up. Last season, everyone was either groaning in pain in a cast on the sidelines, or just didn't have the opportunity.

 

As long as Jonathan Quinn isn't allowed on a green field with numbers ever again, the Bears will survive. Worst fucking quarterback I've ever seen play professional football. Worse than Kordell.
