AP Newsbreak: Cavaliers fire Silas

By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer

March 21, 2005

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Paul Silas was fired as coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday with his team fighting for a playoff spot after being in first place earlier in the year.

Silas told The Associated Press he was called in Monday morning for a brief meeting with general manager Jim Paxson and new owner Dan Gilbert.

``They released me,'' Silas said. ``They didn't think the team was performing as well as it should be and they wanted to make a change.''

Despite having league superstar LeBron James, the Cavaliers have struggled since the All-Star break, losing seven of 10 and nine straight road games, including Sunday's 105-98 loss to Toronto when James scored a franchise-record 56.

Discuss.

It's bullshit the way the NBA fires coaches. Nobody is allowed to really build a program or get that kinship with his players unless he can win a title in 3 years. It's absurd. Nobody is given anytime and people are just fired in the middle of the season. I hate it.

You could say that about any of the big 4 sports

Yeah and it sucks. Nobody is allowed to do anything. What if you don't have the right players and managment has a clamp on your balls in that respect?

Um, the Cavs are "fighting for a playoff spot"? They're still fifth in the East and have a fairly easy schedule after the first week of April. Barring a major injury to LeBron James, they're in, easily. "Tom Withers" is a moron, and so is the Cavs' front office.

They should hire Tim Floyd.

I mean, seriously. When Zruoiuognoigu Ilgouscuss (I think i spelled his name wrong) is your second best player, how good do you expect the team to be? I mean really?

They were a lottery team two years ago, almost a playoff team last year, and probably a playoff team this year. That is called GETTING BETTER.

They exceeded expectations by being a division leader for as long as they did, I think. There's not a lot of shame in finishing second to the defending champions. Like you said, Ripper, they're not really a deep team. It's amazing they had done so well with James, Ilgauskas, and not a whole lot else. This is equivalent to the Bulls firing Scott Skiles because they went on a four-game losing streak.

Good coaches don't use that as an excuse. All coaches in the pros know they're just hired to be fired anyway.

Silas will get another job somewhere.

I'm a Silas fan, so Cleveland deserves what they get.

However, I heard on the radio a few minutes ago that he said some mean things about Boozer, which played a part in the firing...

Could it be because Boozer fucked the Cavaliers over??

I can't even keep track of who coaches which team anymore. It's ridiculous, it's a rarity now a days to have the same coach on a team for more then 2 seasons...

I would agree with Ripper. They lost Boozer because they're an inept organization for the most part.

The NBA is absolutely ridiculous with the way they fire coaches. It doesn't matter how far above expectations the team is, if they hit a cold patch and go on a losing streak, the coach gets fired instantly. I just don't get it. The thing is that these games don't even matter. Whether the Cavs get a 4, 5, or 6 seed, there's really no difference. The lack of patience astounds me.

Basically, unless you're Phil Jackson, Larry Brown, or Greg Popovich, you're not allowed to hit a losing streak or you're gone.

To be the devil's advocate, losing 7/10 and 9 straight on the road is pretty fucking bad, and he handled the McInnis/Snow situation pretty poorly, managing to alienate both of them in the process.

But in Silas' favor, they have absolutely no depth as has been noted, and they still had a +.500 record. He deserved to coach out the season.

And Brendan Malone is a horrible head coach.

Awww how could they fire him after calling Carlos Boozer a cunt?

http://cavaliers.mostvaluablenetwork.com/

The Cavs fined head coach Paul Silas $10,000 today for making a derogatory comment towards Boozer in a post-practice interview that aired Wednesday on The Jim Rome Show. In the interview, Silas answers a question regarding Boozer by simply stating four words, “See you next Tuesday,” supposedly teasing Boozer for not showing his face in Cleveland this past Tuesday. But Silas further suggests to “Spell it out. That’s what he is.”

As in spell out the word using the first letter of each word in his sentence ("C U Next Tuesday"). By calling Boozer what he implied, Silas, as comedic as most Cavs fans may find the situation, embarrassed the Cavaliers organization and, according to sources around the league, failed to display the class and proper behavior expected of all coaches at the professional level. And billionaire Dan Gilbert, who just recently purchased the Cavs for $375 million, definitely wasn’t happy with the negative attention brought on to his organization.

C U Next Tuesday, I have to use that some time.

I made a subtle reference to that earlier

I chuckled when I heard him say it, as I've heard the term used before, but then groaned when I heard him explain it (going against the old saying "Don't explain the fucking joke!")
