X-Net Icon

Which means that if I even get in we'd all better throw our weight behind Landon (since he got in first try)

No I haven't. Only one of them's given me a vote. I'm still waiting (patiently, because to be frank I really don't share VanSiclen's care for this thing. And by that I mean I could really give a flying fuck) on the other judges to say something.

And from the looks of things, I'll probably have to wait for a good few days, judging from some response times.

If I have any one qualm with the entire thing, is that it looks like it has literally no wrestling involved in it at all. I mean, I like RPing when I'm building myself up or building up a match, but frankly, this is American Idol, only with self-masturbation it seems replacing singing. I had an RP made up where Judge goes, gives them a resume, gives them a little interview, and (God help us all) actually does a tryout match. I'm still debating on finishing it up and putting in the running, but looking at a few of the characters there (Frankly, Deja Vu was a far, far funnier version of the "Wanna-be Wrestler" guy they have, and a few of them are just too cliche 'dark' for my tastes. -_-)

I'm all for RP feds, because in the end, they have matches or something related to wrestling. If I wanted to diss someone all day, I'd write up crappy raps or something. The only real reason I really like writing wrestling matches is because it's basically a very unique form of conflict-resolution: Few books or stories have their characters always being put into a form of resolution involving physical conflict. In wrestling, it's the most preferred and most used. Fight scenes are damned fun to write, and that's probably why I wrote for as long as I did.

For the record, K, what I was referring to in my post wasn't necessarily how good we were but how pissed I was over Burn's first RP getting in, and the subsequent infighting among the judge (Lucid?) and Burn that eventually led to the guy getting in. To be fair, I don't really like the way they're doing it (imho, there shouldn't be any second RP's), but I still want to see us win because I do think we're the best. Maybe that's bias, but if anybody tries to tell me that they're not using bias then I'ma laugh in their face. Are they trying to be as fair as possible? Yes. Are they succeeding? ... well, kinda. If you'd like to continue talking about this, shoot me an IM. Hollywood McFly on AIM, [email protected] on MSN.

EDIT: Also, after re-reading my post I can see the line that most likely got you angry. I posted it for two reasons. One, in my opinion, it's the truth; two, I'm trying to massage some egos so that more people will enter. If you want to discuss the overall roleplay quality, or just hate on me for saying something so arrogant... my IM names are up there. Use 'em.

Everyone, go read 'Drea's tryout.

“Excuse me, but do you know where The Masked Man’s dressing room is? I’ve got something I need to give him.” Andrea says as nonchalantly as possible.

“Let me think...he should be in the mid carder’s cocoon. That’s past Dace Night’s horror chambers, take a left at the straight-edge snack table. Word of advice, avoid that. It’s just crackers and flat soda. Anyway, after the snack table, go past Drazon’s greenhouse and humidor and Petey’s freezer. Take a right at the theme song storage units, all nine of them..”

“Nine? Nine rooms with nothing but theme songs?” Andrea asks incredulously.

“Yes, nine. We never know who might show up, and we’ve got to have theme songs ready.” The staffer replies, upset over being interrupted. “Okay, past the theme songs, take a right at Judge Mental’s sound-proof room where he cries when David Blazenwing beats him in two minutes, another right at the room where we service the Danny Williams bots that job to Dangerous, and you’re at the cocoon.” The staffer says.

Andrea'll probably get in as well. And I don't know who the fuck Joseph Mason is, but he's flying our banner and he seems like money in the bank as well.

Also... poor Hoff. That said, I laughed.

I would have one done already, but I just can not think of a good situation to "RP". The judges say they want it to mention X-Net Icon but when Landon did they say I wish people would stop acting like the X-Net Icon is a competition. I have a solid comedy RP ready but I don't wish to waste it on a tryout.

Maybe I'm just too old/take life too seriously for my own good, but I find these people's insistence that RP's be "funny" or "witty" to be incredibly annoying; what if you have the ability to write a decent RP, but you just plain don't do "schtick?" Drea, for example, is a gifted comedy writer, but I just can't write like that; I feel uncomfortable even trying to write "funny."

I don't think it's an "insistence" per se, Dub-C. But a quick glance through the contenders does seem to give the impression that a lot of the "tryouts" are simply re-hashes of this template:

"Wrestler X is good. Wrestler X is great. Wrestler X can kick your ass from here to Tokyo."

I think all it takes to really convince the judges that you can get in is just to be "different". It's the same for Pop/American Idol (which X-Net Icon is based on). The judges are looking for someone different. That is all. In the end, for every comedy RP that they get, they get a handful of "Wrestler X", and it gets tiresome after a while.

That's not to say that only comdy RPs get in. The RP that got me shortlisted was not comedic. It was just a gimmick that was new even in the real wrestling world. I believe that's why I made it past the tryouts. Will I get further than that? Probably not. Like you, Dub-C, I can't write comedy to save my ass, and that's going to cost me in the "Comedy" theme round, assuming I make it that far.

The judges say they want it to mention X-Net Icon but when Landon did they say I wish people would stop acting like the X-Net Icon is a competition.

I think you misunderstood, Johnny. People saw what kind of RPs went through and assumed that the best way was to RP like it was a REAL tryout. The tryout gimmick got stale after a while and Maddix was simply a victim of that. It was just a matter of being too late. If Landon had submitted that RP earlier, it would have been through without a second thought. My guess is that the X-Net judges simply do not want recycled RPs (although some, like Drea's have been accepted) and by mentioning X-Net Icon somewhere in your RP, there's a higher chance of ensuring that the RP is relatively original and written specifically for the competition.

If this sounds like I'm defending X-Net Icon and the judging standards, well, maybe I am. But I'm beginning to see this competition shape up. Some 29 finalists have already been shortlisted and when it comes down to it, like the show it's modelled on, it will end up being a popularity contest... but I like the quality that's going through and it should be an enjoyable read nonetheless.

Just a reminder that you can vote once every 2 hours or something.

Maddix got my third vote.

I have no life.

Okay, seriously, if you have 30 seconds spare, vote for me. Every two hours. Do it. You don't want to make MVS and Taamo unhappy, do you? Vote. And vote now. And keep voting. For me. Maybe once a day you can vote for Toxxic instead of me. But no more.

Or, don't. I'm not really fussed.

I have voted for myself, and will keep doing so, because dammit I don't want someone from another fed going in if I can get in instead.

Everyone else should vote repeatedly for Maddix. Let's show some solidarity, people.

Weird.

So, here's my X-Net question. For SWF shows getting rated highly and everything, has the fed's involvement brought in any people at all? Or is it mostly a vanity project at this point?

Well, SWF has only been on X-Net for little more than a month now... it's way too early to judge if anything's going to come out of being affliated to it.

We actually just grabbed a noob from Xnet. Hopefully he'll enjoy his stay - it takes time to build a rep with a new group, of course.
