RedSox Fans Show That They They Are

Recommended Posts

A fan just took a swipe at Gary Sheffield as Sheffield was picking up the ball in the corner against the wall.

Eh, I've been to Yanks-Sox games at both parks, there is absolutely no difference between your average Yankee fan and average Sox fan except for the fact that they outnumber the other at home, with strength in numbers leading some to feel untouchable. I've seen a lot of shit go down with stupid Sox fans in Boston, and a lot of shit with Yankees fans in the Bronx, but to be fair, for every dumbass there's twice as many respectful fans. It's just that the bad apples on both sides call attention to themselves.

It looked like the fan was looking for the baseball and accidently hit Sheffield. No excuses as fans are absolute dumbasses when it comes to chasing baseballs. Still, it doesn't need more made out of it than it was. It was handled correctly by all involved, particularly Sox security.

Just out of curiousity, I am the only one who chose the White Sox/Indians game over Yanks/Sawx?

I would of watched the Twins and Tigers, but the Twins are way ahead.

I watched it. 8-6 Cleveland win. The White Sox played terrible defense (Carl Everett looked uncoordinated in LF when he hurt himself) and Cleveland capitalized with key hits at key times. Chicago had poor timing for their hits; most of the offense for the Sox started with two outs. Alex Cora played very well defensively for the Indians.

Edit: My fault, I thought this was the MLB thread for this week. I forgot what thread I was in. I'll copy and paste this into the MLB thread.

On topic, I saw the replay and I'll agree with the majority of people here. Sheffield looked like he overreacted. The fan didn't seem to swing at him at all. But, in fairness, I don't know what I would have done if I were Sheffield in that situation. I probably wouldn't have done anything, but I can't know for sure.

One thing for sure Sheffield messed up at was he swung at the fan while he still had the ball instead of immediately throwing the ball into the infield (like he should have). That's the biggest problem--he could have hurt his team through this.

I think it was more interesting what happend between the home plate Umpire and the Red Sox hitting coach. This was just some tipsy fan smacking the wall.

Security took care of him.

Seriously, I heard this on my way home on ESPN radio, and I immediately thought of the NBA fight. Then, I saw what actually happened.

This is getting blown out of proportion because of the teams involved. It was an accident. The fan was removed. Done and done.

And to the thread-starter, thank you for lumping all Red Sox fans in with a moron who tries to catch a fair ball while the juiced up right fielder is coming his way. Idiot.

Well the crowd chanting Yankees Suck at Sheffield for it and for the Umpire ejecting both Francona and the Sox hitting coach is a little bit against them in the defense.

Berman remarking "Thats the Yankees fault too" was pretty funny.

Red Sox fans started a "Yankees Suck" chant at DisneyWorld when Tek was there with his family, so the fact that they started one aimed at Sheff isn't really surprising.

ESPN will be ALL over this tomorrow. PTI, Around the Horn, "OH MY GOD, THE FANS ARE OUT OF CONTROL!!!!!!"

The guy should have just punched Sheff if everyone was going to go this nuts. Espeically Mr. Joe "These people shouldn't be walking the streets" Torre. The fan should have kept his hands out of the way, Sheffield overreacted (and said so after the game, to his credit. Though it did look like he was about to throw a punch when he turned back to the fan the second time), and Sox security got things cooled quickly, to their credit.

Complete non-story. That won't stop the media from making it a story, though.

It won't, because ESPN for the last 2 hours has been like this...

"Oh my god, a travesty has occured in baseball. Oh by the way, Toronto is actually winning. Damn those fans who try and pick fights with players! We have live updates every 15 minutes on this shocking story!"

Fuck that.

Red Sox fans started a Yankees Suck chant at a Raw taping in Boston b/c some guy in the crowd was wearing a Yankees hat.

It doesn't take much to get us going.

It really doesn't look like as big of a deal as they are making it out to be. But of course ESPN is going nuts and blaming the fan and saying that he was taking a swipe at Gary......

The worst part about the Detroit/Indy brawl is the fact that ESPN is going to try and turn every little incident into that so they can enjoy another ratings bump.

The fan: should have been arrested. Not sent to jail or anything, but have had to appear in court and face a fine, and get a mark on his record. And most assuredly lose his season tickets. And I think that the guy WASN'T trying to hit Sheff ... but he should have been smart enough to stay off the field (even if it was just his arms).

Sheff: should learn to just walk away and let the drunk get 86'ed. He should face a small fine for reacting at all.

"Yankees Suck chants": nothing pisses me off more than this chant, especially at non-Yankees game or non-baseball events. I had a guy from the Bruins scouting staff buy me a beer at the Sports Grille for trying a "baseball sucks" chant as soon as the "Yankees suck" chant died down. It wasn't baseball season, and the B's weren't playing the Rangers ... no reason for a Yankees suck chant.

And big ups to the small security guard that ran in and jumped in the middle ... his good reaction might have prevented an actual disaster.

Oh by the way, Toronto is actually winning.

:o Wait a minute! Baseball exists outside of New York and Boston? My god, watching ESPN I would never have known.

It doesn't. Baseball is played 26 times (19 regular season and 7 times in the ALCS) a year with half in Boston and the other half in the Bronx. The rest is just filler to give the teams a rest from beating the piss out of one another.

Here's my feelings:

Fine him, suspend him. Not heavily, but make it count. Err on the side of caution. When a player makes an aggressive move to the stands, and actually tries to throw something, you're walking on egg shells. So you have to go over rather than risk a PR nightmare.

He may have not hit anybody. Those ladies who fell down, spilling beer on Sheffiel in the process, might beg to differ, but it didn't look like het hit the guy. I still don't see an impressive angle that tells me that the guy actually hit him.

And let's face facts here. If Barry Bonds is the King of dicks. Sheffield's royalty. Hell, he's first or second in line for the throne. I like both guys, but they have a lot of baggage and that has to be considered when dealing a punishment.

And another thing. They took statements from people. And it wouldn't be stretching too much to think that those are not gonna turn out to be favorable of Sheff for the most part. That's another strike against him.
