There was something of a fight at the Birmingham, England hotel where the WWE Raw wrestlers were staying. According to several sources I spoke to, the actual hotel was understaffed since there were WWE performers staying as well as a contingent of what was described to me as "kickboxing fans" who were in town for an event promoted by the International Kickboxing Federation on 4/24 in Birmingham.

 

The hotel lobby was said to have resembled a nightclub, with security completely overwhelmed by the sheer amount of people inside. Several of the kickboxing fans had "way too much to drink" and ended up having words with WWE referee Jack Doan and "trying to show what tough guys they were to the fake pro wrestlers."

 

After Doan was physically struck by one of the fans, a number of WWE wrestlers descended upon the kickboxing fans and restrained them, warning them to calm down. I was told it was more a situation where the fans were taken down and stretched to restrain them, as opposed to a full fledged assault on the kickboxing fans.

 

When the kickboxing fans didn't calm down and started up again, the wrestlers and hotel security all physically removed them from the hotel. No police were called and there was no further incident.

Didn't he save Vader? That's what kind of ruined the debut for me, it looked awkward to have someone the size of Vader need help from a relatively small, normal looking guy like Blackman.

 

Plus, I hate it when they use a 'guy jumps out of the audience to help the face' type of debut ... it's no wonder why drunken hicks then think it's kosher to jump the barrier and interfere. "Hey, it got Blackman a job ... maybe if I run in and push over the ladder they'll give me a job, too!"

Damn, MMA fans picking on wrestlers isn't fair. MMA and pro-wrestling are apples and oranges. Pro-wrestlers don't have anything to prove as far as toughness to MMA guys and vice versa, because both parties know they aren't the same.

 

As far as entertainment value as opposed to "toughness", now that would have been a better bone to pick with the wrestlers. I woulda stood with them in that type of argument.

IIRC Vader was being attacked by, I think, the Hart Foundation. Blackman did some kicky thing and then Vader basically saved Blackman from the security that was coming out to detain him. I remember Vader covering/restraining Blackman to "save" him from the security guys.

Apparently Shelton Benjamin, Val Venis and Arn Anderson were involved in this according to some eyewitness reports sent in to PWInsider.

 

When I returned to the hotel, I caught the end of the incident between the WWE workers and the MMA fans. I did not catch the whole thing, but as I was entering the lobby I heard a group of fans yelling "P*ssy" and other remarks towards the Workers, because of course wrestling's "fake." In my eye's view I could see Jack Doan, Arn Anderson (I think), Val Venis and Shelton Benjamin being targeted, a bunch of people in front of me moved into my view and the group was watching the two groups. My friend told me that the wrestlers (he couldn't tell me who, because he's not an avid WWE viewer) took the fans down to the floor, in a way to protect themselves not to attack the fans. The hotel security then moved in and the fans (who the wrestlers had let go off by this point) went straight back after the wrestlers, and the wrestlers and staff escorted them out of the lobby, and I believe out of the hotel. The wrestlers were then protected by security for the rest of the time they were in the lobby/bar, which was only about 30 minutes after this incident had occured.

To be fair, Cro Cop and Maurice Smith aren't one dimensional kickboxers. They mixed up some grappling, not in order to utilize but mainly just to escape it. Cro Cop survived on his back as well as avoided the easy to telegraph shots from Coleman.

 

A better comparison would be Mark Coleman versus any of those "IKSBF Whatever" kickboxing "champions" from back in the day.

 

I mean, these guys are fans anyway. And probably half the size of guys like Venis and Benjamin.
