CHRIS CANDIDO PASSES AWAY

by Mike Johnson @ 12:50:00 AM on 4/29/2005

TNA star Chris Candido passed away suddenly this evening in New Jersey. Candido, 35, had suffered a myriad of injuries to his ankle at the TNA Lockdown PPV last Sunday. He was said to have been in good spirits following the surgery, where a metal plate and screws were inserted to fix a dislocated ankle, a broken tibia, and a broken fibula.

Candido had appeared at the TNA taping in Orlando, Florida this past Tuesday, managing the Naturals from a wheelchair to the NWA Tag Team championships. The episode is scheduled to air tomorrow on the Fox Sports Network.

It should be noted that the police department in Candido's hometown of Matawan, New Jersey would not confirm his passing.

PWInsider.com wishes to send our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Chris Candido

EDIT: I also realise it gives away an iMPACT! spoiler...not that that matters at all right now...

I still can't believe it.

What hurts the most is that his comeback story was awesome, and he looked to be on track to make it big.

Dammit...

Nothing new (except he's back at 33 in this one) but here's PWTorch's blurb:

TNA's Chris Candido dies tonight, cause unknown, just days after serious ankle break

By Wade Keller, Torch editor

Apr 28, 2005, 11:53 PM

Chris Candido has died tonight according to numerous friends of his working in TNA. He was apparently eating dinner at home tonight, collapsed, and was rushed to the hospital. He then did at the hospital. We are still seeking confirmation from the hospital.

Candido, age 33, suffered a freak ankle break on Sunday's TNA PPV in the opening match. He was taken to the hospital and had surgery the next day. He was back at the TNA TV tapings a day later, managing The Naturals in their NWA Tag Team Title win on Tuesday night.

He was said to be nervous Sunday night about his future in wrestling because he had worked so hard to come back from drug addiction to clean up his life. He was relieved to find out that TNA and a number of indy promoters who had him booked all said they would use him and pay him if he could show up in a wheelchair or on crutches.

Candido (real name Chris Candito) wrestled as a member of the Bdoy Donnas tag team with Tom Prichard in the WWF. Before that he worked for Smoky Mountain Wrestling and ECW (where he was managed by his real-life girlfriend Tammy Sytch).

It's a typo, he's 33 and they corrected it. I'm in complete shock as he cleaned himself up from drugs and doing well for himself. This is depressing.

I did one last refresh before bed also and this is what I see. Sadly I'm not too familiar with his work. I know him mainly for his work in the WWF, and even more specifically his feud with Barry Horowitz. Other than his WWF stint, I remember just a little bit of him in ECW, but since I couldn't watch much of that before it was on TNT, I didn't see much of him there. I still remember the first time I saw him show up in WWF though. He was a solid worker, had a rough time in the business for a good while, but had cleaned himself up before he passed, and to me that's the good news we can take from this. I'm glad he had a chance to get clean.

Can someone explain more in detail just what exactly led to his death? What happened at the PPV?

Inside the cage, Sonny Siaki did a dropkick and landed on Candido's leg, ankle, breaking it. He had to have surgery on it.

Sonny Siaki threw a sloppy dropkick at him and as he was falling, Siaki's body fell on top of Candido's leg which was bent back in an akward position. The camera didn't pick it up live, but they showed a replay of it later and it was reminicent of Sid...

And I think when he had surgery the scapel was dirty, which led to his infection. Because most staph infections are even serious enough to warrant death. You'd get the flu at the most as far as immune things are concerned.

Ok, I didn't think this sounded normal. Somewhere, someone fucked up big time, have it be a dirty scapel or whatever. This is just way too fast of a death.

That's so fucking sad. That guy really busted his ass to clean his life up. And to die of a fluke thing like a staph infection is unbelievable.

This one hit me hard when I read it. It would have been like William Regal or Eddie Guerrero dying right after they cleaned up.

God Bless Tammy, that poor woman.

I wonder if Vince will give him a mention on RAW? Probably not. I also wonder if TNA will address his death on tommorow's Impact? Again, probably not, unless they scrap the Naturals/AMW match....

I guess the info I got about him dying from a blood clot was true. DOI just updated with comments from Johnny Candido, his brother. He confirmed he did die from a blood clot.

Apparently Candido's brother posted on another board:

Posted: Fri Apr 29, 2005 1:10 am Post subject: farewell chris candido

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I find it only fitting you hear the truth from me about the death of my bestfriend, brother, and soulmate. Chris died tonight due to a blood clot brought on by complications with his surgery. I just want to tell everyone that in their sorrow, find a way to be happy that he went out the way he wanted to...on top of the world, blonde, tan, and loving life up until the last minute. Every ounce of my brother loved this sport, and for him to go out 2 or 3 years ago wouldn't have been a fitting end to the life of such a determined, passionate, and benevolent human being. I truly view my brother as an angel as will all who knew him. Thanks to everyone for all your positive press, Chris went out a happy man and will forever live on as the(one of) greatest of all time. He would have had it no other way."

I'd imagine he'd at least get the graphic at the beginning of RAW since he was a former employee but you never know with Vince.

As for iMPACT! it's really tough since he's a featured part of the show, and as we now know, he helps the Naturals beat AMW for the tag titles in the main event. If the tape is already sent out, then there's really nothing they can do and will just have to address it next week.

If they can still add something, if I were TNA I'd have Mike Tenay tape an announcement to air at the beginning of the show announcing Candido's death expressing TNA's deep sadness and explain that iMPACT! was taped several days before he died, and that that it features Candido's final moments in a wrestling ring and thus iMPACT! is dedicated to him and as fans watch they should celebrate his life and career. Then at the end of iMPACT! put up a graphic.

Well, I didnt do that searching for nothing, so here it is.

Staph (pronounced "staff") is medical quick speak for staphylococcus aureus bacteria. This pesky little bacterium is very common (many people have some living on their skin all the time), but when it enters the human body, usually through an open cut or break in the skin, it can cause infection and trouble anywhere in the body. Staph infections tend to be pus-producing. Common minor (or relatively minor) skin infections caused by staph include:

Folliculitis Infections of hair follicles that cause itchy white pus-filled bumps on the skin (often where people shave or have irritations from skin rubbing against clothes)

Boils

Infections deeper within hair follicles that leave large, frequently red inflammations (often occur on the face or neck)

Sties

Infection of the follicle surrounding the eyelashes, causing a sore red bump in the eyelid

Impetigo

The infection kids often get around their mouths and noses that causes blisters and red scabby skin

Abscesses

Infection characterized by pus and swelling that can occur in the skin and in any other organ.

Staph infection is also the leading culprit behind cases of food poisoning, and can be to blame for larger life threatening conditions, such as Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), pneumonia, bone infections (osteomyelitis), mastitis in nursing mothers, endocarditis (infection of the inside of the heart), and bacteremia (blood infection). People who are otherwise healthy typically do not usually become severely ill from staph infections, but those at special risk, who have weakened immune systems, include:

persons with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, cancer, lung disease, kidney disease, or HIV/AIDS

people with various skin conditions

the elderly

newborns

people recovering from major surgery

injection drug users (especially those who reuse needles)

people whose immune systems are weakened due to steroid use, radiation therapy, cancer treatment, immunosuppressive medications

women who are breastfeeding

Health care professionals can determine that staph (and not some other bacteria) is the cause of an infection by taking a culture (usually a swab from what looks like a giant Q-tip) from the infected site. Once staph has been diagnosed, the provider will prescribe antibiotics that are known to work on that specific strain of the bacteria. These antibiotics (usually either pills or creams applied to the infected body part) typically kill the bacteria and cure the infection within a week or two.

Hospitals are working to stamp out staph infections, in part because the majority of hospital patients fall into at least one "at-risk" category, but also because drug-resistant strains of staph (versions of the bacteria that aren't killed by one or more of the antibiotics that are commonly used to treat staph infections) are becoming an increasingly common threat. These drug-resistant strains of staph do not cause worse or different infections than non-resistant strains, but they can be much harder to treat because the most common (and easiest to use) antibiotics may not be effective. People with resistant staph infections may require hospitalization to receive antibiotics through an IV or by injection.

Because improper use of antibiotics can help produce resistance to drugs, making future infections much harder to treat, the American Medical Association recommends that patients:

follow the directions for any prescription exactly

take all of the medicine prescribed (even if one feels better after only a few days)

never save old, leftover prescriptions for future use

never take anyone else's prescription antibiotics

Other preventative measures are careful treatment of all skin conditions, including wound care after trauma or surgery, IV drug users taking precautions when injecting, and people with special risk factors being attentive to early symptoms of staph.

For an entire dose of the whys and wherefores of proper antibiotic use, check out the American Medical Association's fact sheet, Antibiotics: Facts You Should Know.

Damnit.

That's all I can say about this right now. Sorry, but this really depresses me, and I just can't talk about it.

Anybody have a good picture of Candido wearing the NWA belt? I'd like to use it for my avatar for a few days.

I never really liked Chris Candido as a performer, but I did respect his efforts to rehabilitate himself to the point that he was at before his death. Just a shame to see so much amount to nothing in a cruel twist of fate.

I hope people that personally knew Candido do him a favor and watch over Tammy Sytch since the last thing we need is two tragedies coming out of this.
