TSM's Top 30 Games!

Recommended Posts

Guest wildpegasus
By the way, I sent word of our list to smarkschoice and deathvalleydriver. Deathvalley's response will be interesting.

 Why'd you do that?

To spark disussion. Also, I'm proud of the list. The average age over there is higher than it is at most boards and there are some hardcore video games fans over there who have played for awhile. They also had the top 100 video game list posted there which inspired this thread. I'm hoping this list brings some interesting debate.

So, where are the panelists who were cheesed about GTA III receiving a spot on the list over another game? What was the game that got knocked out, anyway?

I still think the panel was a bit biased. Too many RPG fans, not enough sports game fans.

Chrono Trigger was number one overall but was not number one on a single list? (Unless I missed something)

Me and Anya were whining about Tekken 5 not making the list. It ended up 31st and lost the tiebreaker to GTA 3. But it's not like I have a problem with GTA 3, it just happened to be the game that beat out T5 by the tiebreaker.

Heh the person who voted for T4 should have voted for T5, then it'd have been on the list. :)

 Yes, that is correct... Weighted system, and Chrono Trigger got enough overall votes in the weighted system to win.

...should be noted that Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time had the most first place votes.

Jer a lot of games if the voting consolodated into one of the particular series of games, would've gotten higher.

Hell, combine all the votes for all the Zelda games into 1, and you would've had a Zelda game come in first.

It has to do with Law of Averages. Overall, Chrono Trigger was the highest overall game over all the lists, even though it wasn't #1 on any list.

I'm guesing the voting was done by ranking, and by number of entries. So, the higher a game on the list, and the more times it appears on the lists, the higher it is.

I agree, but it's a problem that's going to be extremely hard to fix. It's the sports gamer dilemma. Sports games rake in more cash than a lot of the other genres, but they're played primarily by people who play little else.

A relatively small number of those sports gamers can name quality games outside of the current console generation. Plus, the sports titles that were nominated didn't make the top 30.

Askew: maybe get a few of the sports gamers together and make yourself a list of the best sports games?

Super Punch Out

Punch Out

NBA Jam + T.E.

Blades of Steel

Fight Night

Tony Hawk 2

SSX

Gran Turismo

WWF No Mercy

etc are some titles that are going to get more crossover appeal, though. Just about every one of them was nominated by somebody.

Correct CronoT. That's pretty much the weighting system involved.

And really, the list came out far better than I thought it would to be honest. Considering there was around 220 games that got voted for, this isn't half bad.

I can actually increase the list by an extra 20 for the sake of wondering what made Top 50 should anyone wish it.

I'd certainly be curious.

And I agree, I think the list came out pretty well. I don't personally like all the games on it, but I can certainly understand their appeal or historical impact.

Go ahead. It's not exactly the same as if we'd started with our own top 30's, but nice way to see how they came out.

I could have easily listed 50 games for mine.

I listed 2 sports games and 2 wrestling agmes. I also listed GTA III (Xbox version) but only at #29. I love sports games myself. I always have.

I also accidentally listed Mario Kart: Double Dash!! twice. #23 should have been Super Mario Kart.

I'm surprised that no one has disputed my listing of Oregon Trail.

The overall list was determined by a points system. If a game ranked #1 on someone's list, it received 30 points. If it ranked #2, it received 29 points, #3 - 28 points, etc. CT received the most points overall, which is why it's at the top of the list.

The thing with Tekken 5 is that it's still relatively new, so not everybody may have played it yet. I had Tekken 3 on my list, but I haven't played T5 yet. If I had, I might have placed it over T3.

With its rarity, I doubt many people here have even played Suikoden II. I haven't. I've also barely played more than a few hours into any of the Final Fantasy games and I don't even own a PS2, which should explain the lack of titles on my list for that system.

31) Street Fighter II

32) Tekken 5

33) Pac-Man

34) Phantasy Star IV

35) Ninja Gaiden

36) Final Fantasy X

37) Sonic The Hedgehog 2

38) Contra III

39) Space Invaders

40) Ms Pac-Man

41) Metroid Prime

42) Legend of Zelda

43) Half-Life

44) Final Fantasy IV

45) Metal Gear Solid 2

46) Tales of Symphonia

47) Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

48) Fire Pro Wrestling D

49) Final Fantasy

50) Streets of Rage 2

...and before you ask Anya, Tekken 5 and Street Fighter II had the same total, but SFII got the go ahead due to having a first place vote.

Fire Pro D?

Well, that's an import, so technically it wasn't eligible....

But nice job, Flik. Surprised you don't do this kind of stuff for a living. Seems you'd be interested in marketing research or something similar.

And I'm surprised Suikoden II made the list, but a few of people must have put it really high. Very few people have played it.

Believe it or not, Chrono Trigger was never officially released in PAL format, meaning it never came out in Europe, only in the US and the Far East.

I like our list. WOW for the placement of Gunstar Heroes, I thought it was more of a cult hit!

EDIT: Thanks for putting this together, Flik.

wow, I've played more games on the master list than I would've thought (played 10)

relevant or not, I've gotta say it again: Worst game ever = Zoop

I kinda liked the ad campaign for it, though.

Hmm.....how did this fly under my radar?

Yeah, I'd agree that the list is a bit RPG heavy, but RPGs are a genre of games that, if the story and gameplay are solid, are more memorable to the people that play them. I was a bit surprised not to see either Halo crack the top 30 since there seems to be a good following on here for them.

I also would have put RE2 in place of the original. The original might have been the grandaddy of "survival horror" games, but the sequel improved upon it in every way that it rendered RE obsolete until the GC remake. Same applies for GTA III being trumped by San Andreas. I pretty much don't have a reason to play III anymore. Play them both back-to-back for an hour and see how much III just doesn't hold up anymore.

Much love to Special K for the Monkey Island vote, which should have gotten a few more mentions, people.

I might write up my own "unofficial" ballot sometime.

For the record, I hate Anya's list more than CT's, but *just* barely.

What don't you like?

Imports weren't eligible? I guess I missed that part, because in addition to FPD, I listed the Dreamcast Japanese version of Capcom vs. SNK 2 (there was no US version on DC) because I felt that it was superior to the "EO" versions released on the newer consoles.

Take Andrew's list, whack my name on it, and you've pretty much covered my opinion as well.

I'd replace GTA:Vice City with Metal Gear Solid 2 though.

*bails*

Heheh, thanks. I think we can blame Flik and CronoT for #1. I still like it, but I had lost a lot of interest in RPGing and that was one of the few I still enjoyed. I know it was Zelda-heavy, though.

Color me surprised that Zelda 2 made the list and the original Legend of Zelda did not.

Can anyone explain this?

Here's every list I see with Zelda 1 or 2 on it.

Mine has the original Zelda in 12th place.

Andrew has the original in 7th place.

Highland has Zelda 2 in 17th place.

Wild Pegasus has the original in 6th place and Zelda 2 in 8th place

Special K has the original in 29th place

Crono T has Zelda 2 in 28th place.

Did CronoT's and Highland's lists count twice or something? Other than that and FF7 being in the top 10, the list came out pretty well I think. But those are two major flaws.

I voted for it.

There were too many RPGs in the list for my liking. Also Sonic should have been in the list.

The game would of gotten more love if it had anime characters in it instead of that triangle. There are several bad puzzle games that are worse than Zoop such as the games that added "-tris" to its name even though it had nothing to do with Tetris.....but most of these are PC shareware games so they get forgotten. And then there are the generic Kirby puzzle games on the Gameboy which just put the character on rehashes of blockout and baki baki animal games.

I think about it this way, certain games like Mega Man 2 and 3, which do you pick? Or if you're a sports fan, which Madden do you pick?

Games like Zelda and Final Fantasy don't really have this problem since they're very distinct.
