Political or "conscious" hip-hop

Recommended Posts

Guest Brian
the great 'protest' music of the 60's could simply/childly labeled as "Nixon suxors".

Probably more like "Vietnam sux0rs"

Well, the Beatles and dylan, who are considered at the forefront of that generation, hardly did anything protesting the war. People were all over the place; Kent State, Civil Rights, War, Atomic Bomb, etc.

I can't say I would know for sure. The extent of my 60's music knowledge is limited to Zappa (who lambasted said groups and followers) and the first prog groups (who eschewed political messages)

I do notice that most rappers at least try to have one political song on their album, althought some of them fail miserably. But every now and then, a song like Jadakiss' "Why" or The Game's "Hate it or Love it" gets a message across.

I don't normally post in here, but I just wanted to suggest that you listen to some of Immortal Technique's stuff if you want some good political or conscious rap. In particular go download The 4th Branch and The Cause of Death. The Cause of Death is a bit iffy though because some of the stuff he says in it is kind of hard to swallow (sounds like a bunch of conspiracy theories). And if you want something out of the ordinary check out Dance with the Devil. At least for the diss track that starts up at around the 7 minute mark.

Bright Eyes has made several quality concious recordings.

Bright Eyes hasn't even made any quality recordings, let alone any sort of sub-category.

Conor Oberst has proven himself to be a highly gifted musician. His songwriting is beyond disrespect...anyone who knows how challenging it can be to craft a song would agree. Conor writes intricate, multi-instrumental, and memorable songs. You might not like his music but its retarded to disrespect his talents.

Its like if I didnt like Dr. Dre and then said hes a worthless producer...all opinion aside, his talent is undeniable.

I'd go with 4th Branch, Peruvian Cocaine, and Harlem Streets. I absolutely love Peruvian Cocaine. I'll put it up through yousendit later, but hopefully people can get around to buying his stuff (one of the reasons I dislike file sharing is because it discourage independent, growing artists). And 4th Branch is currently in the Music folder Competition under my listing.

I just picked up Common's Be.

Oh yeah, Kanye West can do some more politically conscious hip hop, of he hasn't been mentioned.

How does Royce Da 5'9" match up with Obie Trice? I'm only comparing them 'cause they were both Eminem's "Trust me, this guy is the next ish" artist at one point or another.
