MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2005 Then how are they going to emulate so many different controllers, from the NES 2 button + pad arrangement to the N64's bulky layout to the Gamecube's kidney shaped buttons? A generic controller-shaped device with a screen showing you the button layout for that console's controller is the only thing I can think of. A current Gamecube pad has analog support, a d-pad, 4 face buttons, L, R, and a Z button, plus the C-stick (which replaces the c-buttons in the GC ports of OOT/MM). A GC controller is good enough to play NES, SNES, and N64 games. If they managed to build onto that design without compromising the functionality of the a GC controller, then there's no real problem. Technically, you don't even need digital support anymore in most games, because an analog stick can simply take over digital functions, but Sony and MS are keeping it, because if nothing else, it allows for 4 possible extra buttons if a game requires it. All I could think of when I was reading that they would be offering the old games: Retro Wireless (NES/SNES/N64) controllers..and an adapter for the Wavebird reciever to plug into the USB ports or something. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2005 I'm still shocked that the Big N would team up with IBM to make their next machine and have it underpowered. I think that this is more along the lines of Nintendo wanted the machine to be small, and they were able to make it as powerful as possible given the form factor they were shooting for, sorta like the Gamecube. The only reason why the XBox360 and PS3 are so much more powerful is because they are bigger and have more room for different types of cooling. Microsoft is going overboard on the 360 by using a liquid cooling system, but I bet thats the only way they could keep the thing from overheating.
Use Your Illusion 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2005 True. Plus, judging from Nintendo's conference, it seems as though they've finally come out and said 'Hey, we know we aren't the king of video games anymore, we know most of you will buy Xboxes or Playstations, but, in case you are tired of all of that, here's your alternative'. I must say that the concept of downloading a slew of previous Nintendo titles (Shhhh, they aren't meant to know about emulators) and playing them all on one system is really cool. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2005 as an HD TV owner, I at least hope that Nintendo's stance on that is that they will support HD resolutions like Sony and Microsoft. I can see "IT DOESN'T DO HD!!" being the Revolutions "IT DOESN'T PLAY DVDS!" of the Gamecube, and I would legit be pissed if it doesn't though (unlike where I couldn't care if the GC played DVDs because I already have a DVD player). I dont care if the thing doesn't have a hard drive, I dont care if it doesn't have a HD-spec DVD format like Sony and their Blu-Ray (because neither format will be around long enough to invest in for a video library, although the Blu-Ray format might be a perfect fit for the video games, its still going to be a disc full of space mostly wasted or not utilized efficiently). "Hey, we have 50 GBs of space on this disc, lets not compress anything!"
Eclipse 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2005 I'm not letting XBOX 360 and PS3 specs worry me. Sony put out a BLATANT lie during their hype of PS2 with their "Emotion Engine" and them saying the PS2 would be capable of surpassing "Toy Story graphics"...I STILL THINK they are lying now. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2005 I'm not letting XBOX 360 and PS3 specs worry me. Sony put out a BLATANT lie during their hype of PS2 with their "Emotion Engine" and them saying the PS2 would be capable of surpassing "Toy Story graphics"...I STILL THINK they are lying now. I'd say they probably are. But all the stupid Sony lemmings will eat it up anyway. Que sera. "2-3 times as powerful as the Gamecube" does not sound impressive at all. Nintendo should have thought up a more creative and impressive-sounding figure. Plus, judging from Nintendo's conference, it seems as though they've finally come out and said 'Hey, we know we aren't the king of video games anymore, we know most of you will buy Xboxes or Playstations, but, in case you are tired of all of that, here's your alternative'. That's exactly the impression I've gotten so far. Which is sad. You don't want to look completely off your gourd like Gates and Moore currently are, but if they're going to give off this air of being passe and defeated, how are consumers supposed to have any confidence in them? Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted May 18, 2005 Perhaps they feel that in being humble and nice they can continue to project themselves as the nice guys trying to make it again? Hell, Nintendo has been pushing the nostalgia factor this whole generation. It's almost ridiculous how much they're doing it.

Hell, Nintendo has been pushing the nostalgia factor this whole generation. It's almost ridiculous how much they're doing it. They've made lots of cash on it, so doesn't hurt, really. This "Nintendo Channel" of sorts does sound interesting, but by itself means absolutely nothing. Nice guys? Bwahahaha!! Nintendo used to be some cut-throat mofos. Use Your Illusion 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2005 Nintendo *are not* nice guys though. Nintendo were fucking ruthless in the 1980's when video games were just starting to move into the homes of consumers, doing exactly what Sony, EA etc. do today. Guess you could even compare it to the whole WWF vs WCW thing, what with Vince bitching and moaning how WCW was being cheap when, in reality, they were only doing the same shit he was guilty of doing many years prior. Maybe not to THAT extreme, but you see my point.

AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2005 And Andrew beat me to the ballshot on that one. Heh, sorry. I'm entranced with this whole E3 thing and the insane amount of info going around about everything. And while today seems rather ho-hum, supposedly Nintendo's holding off the big stuff for the last day of E3, which I guess is the controller unveiling. Perhaps actual numbers for the specs. There's next to nothing really known about this thing, and I want it to be a winner, even though it doesn't sound too promising so far. If it's going to be easy to develop for, that can be a big advantage. I actually left that off my list of things the PS1 had the Saturn beat with, but Renegade reminded me. Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2005 I'm just suprised we're getting anything, and that we are proves it to me once and for all that 90% of the Revolution's buzz so far has just been Nintendo blowing smoke up everyone's asses. Just days prior we were told there would be almost nothing about Revoltuion at the show at all. No matter how unique the controller, there's nothing revolutionary about the box or the parts inside of it. If it doesn't even have progressive scan support, it's de-evolutionized from the GameCube. Use Your Illusion 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2005 Despite Nintendo's Revolution coverage, they sure as hell are doing a great job of making me want to buy a DS *really* badly. Have you people seen Sonic Rush? Advance Wars DS? Mario Kart? Super Mario Bros? NOSTALGIA OVER F'N LOAD!
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2005 The Sonic series is dead and doesn't know it yet. Advance Wars would make a cute mini-game but is basically rock-paper-scissors as a standalone game. The Marios interest me, but I don't think they'll move systems personally. but the Mario Bros game seems to hint at co-op play.
Use Your Illusion 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2005 Sonic Rush uses both freakin' screens for levels, though. It's a really cool and fun change from putting in some half-assed touch function. Plus Castlevania is coming soon, if that remotely interests you. I don't know what to make of Nintendogs. Not out here in Oz just yet, and it does look a little cutesy for me. Shame you can't rent these things.

AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2005 From the infamous BrokenSaints blog... “I’m not going to give out the secret. It’s going to be very fun; wait until E3. Nintendo is going to roll out a trojan horse: something that looks innocent and weak and them bam, it will be unveiled. Just don’t make up your mind on the first day of E3. My credibility will be proven on May 19th. I have already given you a hint about what will happen in the next few weeks. Pay close attention to some of the Nintendo related stories that will begin to pop up. So far, many have already been reported. Pay attention. And on the 19th, don’t automatically try to write me off. There is a big suprise in store for everyone. I’ve said that 100 times, but I can’t stress it enough.” -Aries Hmm... AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2005 DS to Revolution connectivity? Since that's basically been confirmed already, no. PSP-to-PS3 connectivity is in, so that's not going to be a unique feature, anyway.

Guest Brian Report post Posted May 19, 2005 I heard they're going to put gyroscopes in the controllers so if you tip them, they'll aim and such. I'm pretty sure they have a contract with the company.
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2005 We've heard this a hundred times before, about the miracle device that will put Nintendo in a dominant position. Megaton, anyone? I know how badly everyone wants to see Mario rule the world again, but it's not going to happen. They'll unveil a funky controller at the end of the show and opinions will be split on it, although at worst it'll be like Celda where everyone howls bloody murder until they try it. Ripper 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2005 The actual conference is a few hours away yet. I'm not quite sure what the hell to make of this '2-3 times more powerful than Gamecube' comment. What the hell does that result in? XBOX LEVELS? Yes, in today's generation it is not as important to be the almighty super-powerful console, but JESUS at least TRY. I'm very interested to see what the heck Nintendo does to cover its ass on this one. Pretty slick design though, I think I like it best out of the three. The thing is, there is nothing else that can be done in video games. All that new systems will do is improve the lighting. Thats it. Basically, the models are to a level where they are detailed as they have to be. The maps on the models are huge and the machine can run them well. The difference between a great looking image and a shitty looking one now is how can the game handle the lighting. ALl the graphical improvements that will come about now is how a deveoloper will simulate real world lighting. That and how much geometry will it be able to have onscreen at one time. All the power pumped into a machine in the world isn't going to mean anything anymore really. To be honest, I haven't seen much in the footage of the next gen stuff that shouldn't be able to be done one the current Xbox.
