Motley Crue vs. NBC lawsuit

Motley Crue sues NBC

From correspondents in New York

26may05

HARD-LIVING American rockers Motley Crue are suing NBC television over the network's decision to ban the group following frontman Vince Neil's use of an expletive during a live broadcast.

The suit, filed in Los Angeles federal court, claims that the ban impinged on the band's rights to free speech and also impacted record sales because of reduced media exposure, The New York Times reported today.

"We meant no harm, but it feels that we're being singled out and unfairly," bass player Nikki Sixx told the newspaper.

"This is a discrimination issue, pure and simple," Sixx said. "All we've ever asked is to be treated like everybody else, which is why we're taking this action."

The network ban was imposed after Neil inserted an expletive into his New Year's greeting to drummer Tommy Lee during a December 31 performance on The Tonight Show.

In a statement, NBC dismissed the lawsuit as "meritless".

"To ensure compliance with its broadcast standards, NBC has the right to decide not to invite back guests who violate those standards and use an expletive during a live entertainment program," the statement said.

Ever since Janet Jackson's prime-time "wardrobe malfunction" at the 2004 Superbowl, US television networks have been extremely wary of any material that might incur the wrath of an increasingly punitive Federal Communications Commission - America's national broadcast regulator.

A model for glam rock excess during the 1980s, Motley Crue are currently on a world tour in support of a greatest hits album.

This reminds of the time Jenny McCarthy sued her book publisher when the book she wrote didn't sell.

I posted this because I found it ridicules they think being on NBC more would've helped their album sales enough. Besides, does NBC owe anyone time on their network? Was NBC neglegent in some way by not letting them appear? Can they actually show that not being on NBC had any impact on them?

This case is so full of holes its not funny.

Was it a ban only on NBC or all Universal channels?

I think it might have been all Universal channels.

But still, they've been around too long to know what is appropriate and stuff. It's not like Children of Bodom came on, made their first mainstream TV apperance and messed up.

They were paid to come on, play two songs and not curse. What's so hard about that? And Vince saying "Hey Tommy, happy fuciking new year" sounded really lame.

Uh, NBC doesn't have to show any band if they don't want to.

Maybe I should sue because NBC's decision not to have my band on cost us publicity and album sales.

I think the VH1! did more damage to the image of Vince Neil than being a dumbass on the Tonight Show.

THE CHICKEN DANCE IS NOT METAL! AND ADMITTING TO GETTING COSMETIC SURGERY IS NOT METAL!

Making an apperance on the Jay Leno Show is not a big deal for a metal band....but if Motley Crue were to make an apperance on a hip show like say Conan O'Brein or even the Carson Daly Show then it would of mattered.
