Somewhat of a Lollapalooza Report-type thing

Recommended Posts

Hey...I suffered through the ridiculous heat and sunniness in Chicago this weekend for the big Lollapalooza festival (so ridiculous, in fact, that Sara from Tegan & Sara passed out during their set). But, it was worth it. Seriously, outside of the Redwalls and Dashboard Confessional, there wasn't one set I saw that I didn't like. Hell, I HATEFULLY LOATHE the Killers' CD, but I thought they probably had one of the best shows of the weekend.

The Kaiser Chiefs were a band I hadn't really been paying attention to before I went...and ended up being a band I want to see live again and again. AWESOME set. There was also a really neat acoustic set with Perry Farrell and Peter Distefano from Porno for Pyros on the Kidzapalooza stage, including a new song about dolphins called "Aqua" that made just about no sense.

In terms of the people there...Primus fans are so much fun to be around, unless you're actually with them. Smelly, disgusting, stoned hippies who liked dancing. You haven't lived until you've seen a hippie chorus line for "My Name is Mud". I also got hugged by a hippie last night that was there to see Widespread Panic who wandered into the Killers' set. The drunks...they were drunks.

Awesome Billy Idol story: I stood through Dashboard's set to get a good position for Idol's (they played the same stage back-to-back, with an hour in between). Anyway, I ended up front row, almost center. Idol comes out, HYOOOOOOOGE ovation for him. About halfway through the set, he hops down to the media pit ledge thingy with three drumsticks in hand. He walks around and throws one out into the crowd. He then grabs the second one and walks to our section. He dangles it out in front of everyone near-by...then lightly tosses it, and it lands right in my hand. I look down, and it's autographed. So yeah...that was sweet. He also had a habit of lifting up his shirt to show off his abs and snarl at my friend's girlfriend, effectively making my friend jealous, which was also fun.

But yeah...if anyone has any other Lolla questions, just ask away.

Did you see Digable Planets and if so, were they good?

Nah, they played during Weezer, and we wanted to see all of Weezer's set we could before leaving early to get back on the train for home to sleep for the night.

Damn Billy Idol. He's doing some Warped dates, but not the show I'm going to. I'd love to see him do a live show.

I had some friends who saw him at Warped in Indianapolis. Said there was a lot of negative reaction to his set, especially from the young'uns.

Idol kicked ass, too bad these young fucks don't know actual good music, yet they flock over to some act like 'Fall Out Boy'

The Matches sucked, and will continue to do so.

Nope, no G. Love. He went on during the "laying down to avoid passing out from heatstroke" period on Sunday. I did hear a little of the Arcade Fire's set (they were up against him), and they sounded really great.

G. Love did bring a shitload of merchandise to sell at the Lolla Store tent. The "BOOTY CALL" women's underwear that was being sold for G. Love, from what I heard, was the least-selling merchandise of the weekend.

A Primus crowd is a weird gaggle of people. They're one of the few bands that headbangers and hippies tend to enjoy in similar proportion.
