Quebec wrestler facing murder charge "seems like a big puppy," says lawyer

MONTREAL (CP) - The lawyer for a baby-faced wrestler charged with killing a teenager and dumping her body in a shallow grave says his client "seems like a big puppy dog," and that the scary wrestling personae he had was just advertising.

Leonard Waxman said promotional wrestling websites that have described Kurt Lauder the wrestler as having "the face of a baby, the body of a monster and the soul of a serial killer" shouldn't affect his case. "It's all just advertising propaganda for the wrestling," Waxman said in a telephone interview Wednesday. "I don't think it can hurt us at all.

"I met him in person a few times. He seems like a big puppy dog. He didn't seem scary or violent but who knows. Wrestling is all acting. You get lots of bruises or scratches in there but it's mostly acting."

Lauder was charged Tuesday with the first-degree murder of Shanna Poissant, 16, who has been missing since July 11. His mother, Suzanne Lauder-Grosser, 52, and his father, Ian Lauder, 61, were charged with being an accessory after the fact.

The charges were laid after police found a body believed to be Poissant's buried in mosquito-infested woods near Hemmingford, Que., about 50 kilometres south of Montreal. They had been searching for the girl for two weeks.

Ian Lauder, who is in hospital, was arraigned from his bed via teleconference late Tuesday afternoon.

"He's under guard," Waxman said of the man.

An autopsy on the body was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon but Const. Jayson Gauthier of the Quebec provincial police said results were not immediately available.

Police have not confirmed the body is Poissant's but said it probaby is.

Kurt Lauder, an apartment building security guard who various wrestling websites said competes under the name Kurt Lauderdale, knew Poissant, Waxman said.

"I don't know how close friends they were but certainly they knew each other," he said, noting police were told Poissant was last seen riding in Kurt Lauder's truck.

"From what I understand, he was a wrestler on weekends and I think she was interested in wrestling and liked the wrestling and liked to watch the wrestling and films."

A message board on the International Wrestling Syndicate website had varying levels of support and condemnation for Lauder.

Glow, a wrestling fan, wrote: "My thoughts and prayers are with the young girl's family and with Kurt also."

Others demanded Lauder's biography be removed from the site immediately, although the site had already removed text and video about him.

The syndicate, which ran an event Saturday night involving Lauder, posted a message of support on its website Tuesday evening, saying it is " inconceivable that he is capable of such actions."

"Nobody truly knows what has happened thus far and the IWS unconditionally stands by Kurt during this ordeal," the statement said.

Waxman said he has not seen the police evidence.

Waxman said he will wait until he sees the autopsy report before proceeding with a bail request for Kurt Lauder but said he will definitely seek bail for his parents, likely next week.

He said Ian Lauder is in poor health.

"His health is very precarious," Waxman said. "He suffers from fibrosis, he has pulmonary hypertension, he's had triple bypass surgery in the past, he's on medication, he requires oxygen all day so he's not in good health."

In Hemmingford, people were still reeling.

Isabelle Coupal, who knows both families, said, "To know everyone involved in it, it's sad. It hurts everyone."

Well, here goes the reputation of wrestling Quebec...

I still can't believe this happened. I was shocked to see this when I was eating dinner with friends in Quebec City.

Here's some more stuff I managed to scoop up on the situation.. Fuck this is bad..

Shanna Poissant

"Did an anonymous comment on a blog help break a murder case? "

"Last Thursday, July 21st I blogged the Gazette story about the disappearance of Shanna Poissant. Overnight someone left the anonymous comment. On either Friday afternoon or sometime Saturday morning I forwarded the comment to investigators I know with the Surete du Quebec and asked them to pass the tip along to the Hemmingford investigators (I did not save a copy of that email, but I copied two journalists I know on it; one from the Montreal Gazette and one from the Sherbrooke Record)

In that email I suggested that police were probably already on-to Kurt Lauder (you NEVER want the SQ to believe they didn't think of something first), but that this information might corroborate what they were already investigating.

Was the anonymous tip what led to the arrest? Maybe. Doubtful? We'll never know. Even if it was, the Quebec police would NEVER admit it.

I think it's enough to say that the anonymous tip was "bang-on", and was given a full five days before the arrest."

Chilling

I'm dumbfounded. ..

Today Quebec police announced the arrest of Kurt Lauder in the death of Shanna Poissant, after her body was found in a shallow grave north of Hemmingford.

Dumbfounded because late last week the following comment was left on this blog

Link: http://whokilledtheresa.blogspot.com/2005/...-ca-change.html

"I was at a party near Hemmingford and was told that she was given extasy pills by Kurt Lauder and she overdosed. He then panicked and buried her body....Anonymus"

And, yes, I forwarded the tip to the Surete du Quebec

Yikes... that's about all I can say. If the body hasn't been indentified, I can only hope for the best for Shanna. I also hope for the best Shanna's family. And I also hope for the best for Kurt.. I really hope he didnt do it. This is not only bad for IWS... its bad for wrestling in general. And the worst part, Shanna from various reports, seemed like a very nice girl.

That could be what really is winning the case. Shanna is reported as being a very nice girl, and from that quote, it seems as if she was probably avoiding sexual intercourse, which Kurt seemed to want.

Either way, I'm going to try and not keep an opinion and hope for the best for Shanna and her family. And wrestling in general.

This has been all over the news in Montreal. Kurt is charged with first degree murder, his parents are charged with complicity after facts since they helped him clean up and everything. The police supposedly have a really solid evidence, and the simple fact that Kurt Lauders himself led them to the body seems to indicate that he is in fact guilty. This is just tragic.

However, I wouldn't say this is really bad for the Quebec wrestling scene. Just for the IWS, who said they were supporting Kurt, even though part of the evidences that led to the charging were revealed.

Had this been the 80's and he was with WWF Vince would have taken care of it (allegedly). Though I hope this is resolved in the best way possible.
