With the outside on Warner (who I sorta like, it's early) and Feingold who I don't know that much about yet. The last two sound more appealing than the picks of doom. SuperJerk 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2006 Here's somethng I was thinking about the other day... Think about how many shitty, joke candidates there were in every campaign for the last 20 years. I'm talking about fuckers like Morey Taylor, Alan Keyes, Steve Forbes, Bob Dornan, and Pat Buchanan. Guys who stood no chance in hell of being nominated, but drew attention away from serious, well-qualified candidates (i.e. Richard Lugar, Phil Gramm, Lamar Alexander, etc) none of whom got very far in the primaries because people who could've been supporting them were too busy supporting the other jackasses. To make things worse, Dole used his considerable leverage to keep other candidates from even entering the race. Still, there was probably enough opposition to keep Dole from getting the 1996 nomination, but the anti-Dole people couldn't unify behind a guy who actually stood a chance of winning. The 1996 Republican campaign is a prime example of how NOT to nominate a candidate. I really hope all the one-issue, publicity-stunt candidates can be kept out of the election cycle this time. If Gore did choose to run I think he'd present Hillary a stern challenge in the primaries (the two don't like each other very much dating back to Bill Clinton's term in the White House) and might even win the general election because I don't see why he wouldn't attract just as many votes as he did in 2000. The key for Gore if he did decide to run would be to be himself and not be molded into boring Gore like his political consultants did to him against Bush in 2000. I enjoy his campaign ads; they're better than "Hi. I'm Herb Kohl. I can buy and sell every one of you gun-toting cheese-eating yokels." However, polls do show that the American public is becoming more aware of global warming as an issue that has to be dealt with. This is not to immediately say that global warming will become the next political hot topic but I'd say that if the U.S. gets hit with another hurricane like Katrina this year it could open up political ground, especially for Democrats, and Gore could capitalize on that. I do agree with the above poster that Gore's national numbers are not that good but it's not like those cannot be fixed. The key for Gore right now if he wants to run is to play to the liberal base and have can always try to triangulate later. Plus, Gore could get solid backing if he wants to run as the ABH ("Anyone But Hillary") candidate since I just don't see the support in the party yet for Mark Warner or Evan Bayh. Probably would've been in 2000 had it not been for that whole nuclear secrets debacle at Los Alamos. There was a rumor Kerry looked at him too but Kerry chose the wrong running mate because if he'd chosen Dick Gephardt he may have won Missouri and thus sealed the election without Ohio. Whoever runs for the Democrats needs to actually state positions on the issues and bring up more than their military career as a selling point. Adding to that...look where we are right now. High gas prices, a rough economy (maybe getting better, but not for many middle class Americans), a failed Middle East policy, problems with Iran. A president with a very low approval rating. Sound familiar? If you were alive more than 25 years ago, it should be very familiar. The Democrats need their own version of Ronald Reagan. I don't care who it is...Russ Feingold, Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, whoever...whoever it is, they need to make America feel good about being America again. It doesn't even matter what their stated policy is. If they can go out, talk about putting America back to work doing great things and facing down its problems, they're going to win in a landslide.
